And a professional grade weapon only cost a little more money than the cheap Saturday night special made in some 3rd world country and mil.spec/ law enforcement grade weapon are less likely to malfunction and embarrass you. $300.00 for a Taurus or $500.00 for a Sig.! Simple thing here, I believe that the issue with the Taurus G2C not feeding correctly (after looking at my 9mm version) and tinkering, was a simple feed lip issue. The magazine follower was staying about 1/8" lower than proper position, which not only caused the rounds to not properly lift high enough, but also the metal hook/stop on the front of the magazine (that prevents the follower from coming out) was also acting as a hook to make the rounds nose dive. The lips were about .380" space which I have no idea if this is within spec or not, but by bending to an average of about .40", I can manually cycle rounds without issue. Also I could not load more than 6 rounds and I can now load 9 rounds. With the magazine falling out, I honestly think that the force of the nosedive into that front hook/stop was enough to vibrate the mag free. I have not fired it live fire yet, but plan to soon.

Yet another new Taurus that doesn't work out of the box. I feel like Taurus firearms are 80% firearms, in their own way. After this video I did polish the feed ramp and exterior of barrel as well and manipulate magazine feed lips. Also there is a large follower hook that is almost non-existent on the 9mm version, but on the .40 S&W version it actually hooks over the bullet noses and causes them to nose dive down, so I bent them outward a tad. I was able to rack in and out a couple magazines worth of rounds without issues, but I have not fired it since then. Hopefully there's some improvement.

I once talked to an older man who was a retired engineer at Smith and Wesson for many years at a gun show. I always thought the 40sw was just a shortened 10mm but he told me it was actually based off a failed cartridge from about 10 years prior. The 40sb or something to that extent . It was being chambered in an all metal semi auto with a 10+1 capacity and was marketed exclusively to law enforcement. I guess it couldn’t gain any traction and never reached production in any sidearms . He told me the cartridge was designed to emulate the performance of the 357 but in a semi automatic with improved capacity to a revolver all while offering more stopping power than the 45 or 38 sp. the most popular duty calibers at the time. The original design was optimized to shoot weights from 125 to 165 with the 155gr load being the standard. It kinda makes sense because to this day the 40sw really shines while using those weights. Also he said they did make a few adjustments to fit what the fbi needed at the time but it’s not just a shorter 10mm. There’s a little bit of forgotten history behind the caliber that I thought was interesting. Both of those rounds did a good job. Critical Duty is usually a pretty solid offering in most calibers. Great test!!! I hope you got that g2c lined out I’ve always considered them a great value.

Good comparison - I’ve been shopping for a new ccw that is lightweight since I’m tired of lugging my g23(gen 4) around. I already have a good amount of federal H$T 165 which affects my choice. There’s only one problem that, imo, still makes 357 mag snub remain king: it’s called scandium - aka the 360pd. In that j frame you basically get a gun under 12oz that can still do 400+ ft pounds (or more) with decent control. All semi autos in that weight range aren’t .40 - and almost all (save for some guns no longer in production) are actually chambered in .380! - not even 9. I was looking at a seecamp .380 which is 13.5 oz- but again , that’s like half the ft pounds of energy. I love .40 , but due to that specific 360pd model - .357 is still the ultra light carry king- much better than .380 for the same weight. That’s why that 360pd is so much money haha - SW knows they have something special there.

From what I've seen with factory ammo, you typically get on average the same energy ft-lbs as .45 factory loads, but with greater capacity + higher velocities. Usually 185gr loads I order beat the same weight in .45 in velocity off the shelf, but that could just be my own experience. I usually carry smaller calibers, and thus shoot the larger ones less, so I could be incorrect.

This is about the same sort of gel performance and ballistic capability that one might get if shooting Critical Defense .40 from a Glock 27. The barrel length is the key. Not the different pistols and who made them. Both calibers in Critcal Defense are premo self-defense cartridges. Either one would be a good choice over 9mm in anything BUT a +P or +P+ variation. Both .40 Smith and Wesson and .357 magnum have the combat potential that 9mm Para only really gets from being juiced up into a higher pressure range. Which causes the same sharper recoil and weapon wear that the F.B.I, various PDs, and those in the shooting community blamed .40 S&W and .357 magnum for.

Good to see the revolver didn’t have any mag issues. lol 😂

The recoil on both looks very stout. But then again, it's more difficult to carry a Glock 22 or a L frame 357 concealed even though they won't make your hand hurt after shooting

Tree fiddy seven is such an all around good cartridge. Need self defense? 357. Need low recoil? Load it with 38. Need to hunt medium game? Grab a 6+ inch barrel and a scope. Need to defend against bear? Hard cast +p+. It's a do it all round.

I add one more bracket, and that's wadcutters. Even though they are ".38 Special" they are like half the pressure usually, and in my mind sort of a different cartridge as they are about as low recoil as the other option, .38 Colt ammo in a .357 Mag revolver.

Imaging how fast Taurus would fix issues if the dealers took the faulty guns back and short paid the invoice to the factory.

The Taurus 40S&W G2C has to be racked fast with Hornady ftx and hollow point bullets.

I'm no terminal ballistics expert, but those rounds out of those barrel lengths seem about equal to me. Sucks that that particular Taurus is a lemon. It would probably make a decent carry gun otherwise.

I think it's the magazines. I been tweaking them and I feel like when I shoot it again it will work better. The feed lips were so tight that the follower wasn't even going up to where it should be. I was pretty shocked in editing (as I was too focused on malfunctions in the field to mental note the velocity I was getting) about how powerful the .40 S&W was. The 9mm Critical Defense is like maybe 330 ft lbs energy in the G2C 9mm, this .40 S&W was a LOT more than that.

@@GunSam The 40 is a good cartridge, IMO. It doesn't require the beefier frame that the 10mm does. I know you asked not to make the test all about the Taurus, but it is showing a big reason why I'm carrying a small revolver instead of a comparable sized semi-auto with its round count advantage. Trust really does matter.

Sorry about your luck dude. I've owned several Tauruss over the years and honestly its a crap shoot on what you get. Their quality control is essentially non existent. I feel like 15 years ago they were much better but unfortunately keep going down hill.

I had a PT145 that would nose dive the first round of a full mag everytime and would sometimes drop the mag when shooting. It sat is the gun case for a long time and I just sold it in the last year.

Im not a bit surprised with the performance of the 40 S&W I actually carry a Charter Arms revolver in 40 S&W The light 125gr 357mag would cause a good wound channel Light bullet high velocity The 40 S&W in 135gr would do similar type of wound channel I carry good ole 180gr in all my 40 S&W .. 27 & 23
