That screwdriver looks like it lived in the back of the Scooby Doo Mystery Van. I am pretty sure Wilma and Daphne once fought a paint blob monster the same colors as your screwdriver. Wonderful restoration. Very informative on the various steps. I wish I was smart enough to remember everything you showed me.

Okay, you've got a new fan. Love you're laid back delivery. BTW-I commented a while back on your restoration of a 1/2 inch ratchet from back in the 70's. I mentioned that I had one exactly like it that had quit working for me. I took it apart and cleaned it up. Of course, the one part that you warned us not to lose I lost. The little ball bearing that holds the direction selector. Fortunately, we have a great Ace Hardware store here that has a good selection of various ball beatings, so I easily found a replacement. Bottom line, my ratchet handle now works like new. Thanks for the encouragement.

Wonderful restoration. I thought the easy way out would be to paint the handle and cover up those black stains. The finish you put on the handle is the perfect complement to this vintage screwdriver. I collect tap and die sets, particularly color case hardened sets. The boxes are always in rough shape and covered in greasy thumb prints. For years, oxalic acid has been my go-to product. It's very inexpensive, and it seems to work as a degreaser as well as a wood bleach. One tip I wanted to offer, I have found that a small amount goes quite a long ways when UV light is used. I typically drench the box and then wrap in Saran wrap and put it in the sun. You have to check it every hour or two, bubbles form and you will need to rewrap the saran wrap to even it out. In general, on a 75-year-old box that has been in a machine shop that whole time, two treatments with the sun have been plenty to bring it up to restoration quality
@jpsimon206
@jpsimon206 2 жыл бұрын
For what it is worth, I have never neutralized the acid. It seems to seep in about 3/16 of an inch max and then peters out. It does not make the wood brittle and stringy. Some would get a little thinner in the cambric layers, but a later of oil seems to flatten it right out. I think the UV is the main factor in its effectiveness. I think you should give it another try, I have used it for years to great effect. Also, for what it is worth, it is quite mild. I wash my hands afterwards, but I don't feel the need to wear gloves

Wow, talk about night and day difference on the screwdriver. It now looks terrific. Well done. Oxalic acid is a very mild acid. Sold in most hardware stores as "Wood bleach". In my local hardware store it is with the other wood finishes. It can lighten the wood, but as you observed, it does not have a big effect. I also use this to remove rust for large items where it would be too expensive to use Evapo-rust. I was expecting the sparkled handle pokey things to be a future project with Mag Daughter. It cleaned up very well. Dave.

Very timely video for me. I just found several old wooden handle screw drivers, cleaned them up and restored them. One was painted black like yours but the shaft ran all the way through the handle. Like yours there was no name and I could not get the black staining completely out of the wood around the Ferrell. I am going to get the stain remover to try on future projects. In this case the black stains actually turned into highlights when I stained it gunstock. Wish I could send you a picture, they turned out great.

Amazing transformation Magdad! Now I’m going to get a quart of that Bombay Mahogany stain! Beautiful handle. Super job on the Needless Markup tool too. It had to be expensive. 😄

Blimey that took some work MD, but the end result (of that well used & abused screwdriver) was a treat...

I've been watching your channel for a while and I've always enjoyed it. I might be wrong but in this video it seems like you are doing the commentary live as opposed to in other ones it has felt more like a voice over. For what it's worth I think this approach is even better. I'm guessing the screwdriver belonged to a painter and was used to pry open a thousand paint cans and stir 100. It came out fantastic!

Check out something called Fordite or Detroit agate, it almost looked like the ferrule had that effect. Job well done sir.
