What a great find! That cleaned up nicely and the striker cap you made looks great. Maybe we'll get to see you use the gouge with your mini lathe one day.

Well thanks quite interesting..You did a good job..I dont know about the striker cap.aspect though..from a design point of view I wouldnt be advisable to strike that end as it would damage the threads on the cap,and the the handle as well..which is hollow wood....aybe thats why there arent many arond today...such handy tools still exist today..but without the file,chisel bits..most such tools today use the same 1/4" little tips that are used for power tools rather than those long shank types that you have...This disappoints me as I remember the RADUGA brand handle set that I lost somewhere..highly unlikely to get another..It was made in the old USSR and was very good..a white top black bottom plastic case with dlimsy blow mulded insert it had a screwdriver handle with strong collar and was tang through design end of tang being striker..had two Philips head,two flat head,pointy thing,gimlet,two wood chisels and a 1/4" cold chisel..the only downside was the handle being wonderfully solid and quite ergonomic did not contain all the blades like your one does..keep a eye out for ine RADUGA set at your Flea Markets..they were good..I miss mine

Nice job on that. Finding one with all the original bits was amazing. I have several of the similar tools that I’ve restored. I like them, good old fashioned ingenuity. You gave me an idea. Adding a graver tool for engraving would be easy and should work well given that nice handle.

Impressive that you took that multi tool from grimy to gleaming. Definitely the hole making tools dominated that group of bits. That poor tool must have sat in the bottom of a tool box or somewhere where it was unused but collecting the detritus of years. turned out good and deceiving how big a tool it actually is when you show it in relation to your vise.

Thanks! My dad died in his late eighties earlier this year, and for the memorial dinner we're planning for his coming birthday I've been trying to put together a display of some of the tools I remember from his toolbox when I was growing up in the 1970s. This thing had had me stumped! I didn't know what it was, just that I wasn't allowed to mess with it, ha! Thanks to your video, I've been able to identify it and I've tracked down a complete set on eBay. My dad had spent most of his working life in a steel mill and I wouldn't be surprised if he had gotten his Socketool as a safety prize from either the company or his union. I don't think I ever actually saw him use it.

Enjoyed seeing the making of the striker cap and what a great job you did on it too. I was expecting the Bombay Mahogany for the finish, but it came out really nice without it. That Miller Falls Tool Holder looks like new. Good, interesting video. Btw, I recently picked up a can of Minwax Bombay Mahogany Polyshades (They didn't have the BEHR) and I really like it. It has the stain and polyurethane in one step.

I think the idea of trying a rust remover like Evaporust instead of the wire wheel in order to avoid dulling the file is a good one. Going to try it.
@357magdad4 сағат бұрын
Thanks Pat! I've had some limited success "sharpening" dull files by soaking them in vinegar for a week.

At first I thought this great old tool would be a candidate for the official Magdad Bombay Plum refinishing stain for the wooden handle. I'm glad you kept the original appearance. The wood is attractive, and isn't cracked or broken. I'm amazed that this old tool is so complete -- all it's original pieces. What are the chances of that after 100 years? It was a public service to save this complete, rare American tool. Thanks.

Very nice old tool. I have run across tool sets from the turn of the previous century. A lot of them have reamers in them. What people were reaming, I don't know. But, you see that tool quite frequently. Nice job on your set.

That is beautifully done, great job. I picked a similar tool up at the flea market this last weekend, and I’m looking forward to cleaning it up as well. You’ve given me some ideas about how to go about it, especially with the nylon brush, cloth and mineral spirits. I think I only have five or six tools inside of it though. Thanks so much for sharing and hope you have a great week.
