I made a calculations mistake in the video. The 358 Norma can't match 340 Weatherby energy. Sorry for the wrong data. And there are a few wildcat 358 cartridges that are faster

I have seen this too and its ODD... Because same weight bullets are VERY close or sometimes exceed 340!! I feel there is some prejudice's either for another or against the NM with some data. (Not yours Austin but what we have ta read.) For instance. As I always say. Manuals are WHAT WAS SAFE @ the TIME and with THAT AUTHORS conditions and firearms. Its a safe GUIDE. I am NOT AT ALL suggesting to exceed. But a judicious and experienced reloader knows by experience whats safe in THERE OWN forearm. For example, New Speer shows upper 25 yo low 2600 fps velocities. Older Speer shows near 2900 fps for same bullets using more powder. Odd knowing most experienced reloaders, knows, Speer data is generally "warm". Using imr4350 all with 250g bullets, for instance, you will find 72-79g max charges... I have not gotten to 79g that would take a drop tube... But 75.3g shoots very well in mine for accuracy and 77g gets me more then enough Velocity (and recoil :) ) So as much as we love to show data as "facts" it often boils down only what that author recorded... I know the 358 is a monster and all Ill ever need. Ill never hunt huge Africa game. But there is no Bear or Bison, Elk or Moose that Ill be under gunned for. Thanks for this Austin! God Bless my friend!! 🙏🙏❤️‍🩹

Thank you!!!! I am currently loading my 35 Whelen .020 off the lands (jam test) at COL 4.010! Learning so much about reloading. My REM 700 has an adequate magazine length to accommodate the cartridge length. I made a few dummy, rounds to function test. Going to use H4895 and CCI #200s or CCI BR. Plan to start at 51, 52, 53, 53.5, 54, 54.5, 55 grains. A very important fact is the velocities of the 35 Whelen are based mostly off a 22” woods rifle and the 358 Norma is a 25.5” and ask most people 3.5” make a different… in the woods lol Again, thank you for having my favorite deer/ black bear cartridge make an appearance on your channel.

Another monster that wasn't appreciated by the general public...It didn't come up to par with some of the other magnums of the time because Remington neutered it with a 24" barrel, with a 27" barrel my rifle will push 200gr accubonds well past 3000 fps

I've always been intrigued by the 358 Norma Magnum and I always thought to myself that it would be a better choice for the Alaska hunter than either a 338 bore or a 375 - kind of a blend of the two combining the best of both worlds. But I never had one, never shot one or loaded for one. But I've always had this round in the back of my mind and I think the 358 bore would be a great diameter to choose for a custom wildcat. Great video!

Great video on a wonderful overlooked cartridge! I just have to weigh in on the “great Alaskan cartridge” comment. People always talk about hunting big game in that state but overlook a much better opportunity right next door. Canada. A friend of mine who was a guide in Alaska for over 10 years once told me that hunting in Alaska will be the most money you will ever spend to be the most miserable you will ever be in your life. He said Canada has the same species of big game that are much more plentiful with much more desirable weather (much like Colorado, Wyoming and Montana) and can be hunted more cheaply. Every single person I ever met who hunted the same species in both places confirmed this. And his biggest big game trophies are all from Canada. So he obviously knows what he is talking about and the proof is in the pudding.

I've been researching this thing a bunch lately. Not a ton out there sadly, as you point out with it never catching on. Not quire sure what it is but with the few mediocre BC bullets out there it really adds a significant amount to the distance capabilities of the Whelen. It's no 338, but maybe some of these newer copper bullet makers can do a little better if interest gets revived. Something around 230g with a g7 around .225 would be an elk deletion machine of the highest order.

Can you show me that data that would have the 9.3x62mm putting the 35 Whelen to shame? I think that the 9.3x62mm is a great non magnum cartridge and the smallest revered African cartridge (due to the Germans, who moved to Africa, needing a bit more bullet, to protect their land from dangerous game.) However, all of the reloading data I have found has them almost identical. You can find standard 286 grain bullet loadings for the 9.3. But you can also find 275/300 grain loads for the 35 Whelen that will reach speeds in excess of 2400/2300 ft./s (which I would never load) I’ll leave that for Elmer Keith. I’ll be happy with a 250 grain bullet traveling 2500-2550. Again, I think they are both some of the best non-magnum medium bore rifles they make. I just don’t think either of them are vastly superior to the other. If I lived in Europe or Africa, I would most likely have the 9.3x62mm. However, in North America, the 35 Whelen gets the upper hand.
@cw2a
@cw2a 6 ай бұрын
@@mickeydoodle6014 the 9.3 does not put the Waylen to shame. But some data from some sources will show the 9.3 quite a bit above the Whelen. I think that could have to do with some old data before the Whelen was legitimized keeping it to a little bit lower pressures. One thing to 93 does have is some better heavier bullets but it's very very similar case volumes so your expansion ratio is a little better for the 93, but it is for the 35 so all things equal, you should always see a difference.

Thanks for the video. I watch your work; but I stumbled on this while searching for .358 Shooting Times Alaskan information. A friend hunted elk regularly and preferred the 7mm STW. I’m a 35 caliber fan; and thought I might go that route. I’ve gleaned some information using the Hodgdon website. While the STA is more potent, it might be more practical to go the route of the Norma Magnum. Neither is as practical as the .35 Whelen; and I’m always looking for a No. 1 in that caliber.

RW, cool video on a cartridge that is not completely forgotten. Sadly it was never known. I've always had a bit of a lust for the 358 Norma. In all my years I've seen one rifle chambered in it. That was in the early or mid 70's in an Omaga rifle. That's also the only Omaga I've ever seen. She wore a beautiful laminated stock. Laminated stocks were very unusual back then. As a side note, at about the same time, I read a magazine article about the 358 Norma. The article discussed and compared the merits of issuing the 358 Norma or the 375 H&H to pipeline crews for bear protection. Obviously the 358 didn't win out. I find it odd that the 120 year old 35 Remington seems to be the popular 35 caliber. The 358 Win, 35 Whelen, 350 Rem Mag are almost forgotten. Some how America is not a 32 or 35 caliber nation. Happy Easter to you and your family. Cheers, Jeff

Wow anyone in the US that has the 358 Norma Mag? 🤔 I own a Husqvarna 1651 in caliber 358 Norma. I love that rifle and caliber. However, I have replaced the stock with a montecarlo type that is custom made. I had a Sako 75 Stanlines in 338 win mag I also liked. It is one of the most beautiful rifles to look at in my opinion. That rifle was good the caliber was good. 338 win mag and 358 Norma Mag are almost identical. 358 Norma leaves more energy at close range. Almost all the game I shoot at goes down right in the bang with my 358 Norma. I have fielded several large wild boars as well as mosse with that rifle. I handload myself so I get good ammo. However, I have run out of the bullet I used for a long time now. I can't remember the name right now and I'm not at home and can check what it's called. I have uploaded about 50 Norma Oryx I will use. It's a bit softer than the bullet I've been using which I can't get hold of now. I ran my Sako 75 in 338 Win Mag hand-loaded with Hornady Interbond. I tested Nosler Partition purchased from federal. I was not at all satisfied with them. Never more partition for me after I saw how the wild boar looked after the shots. Something was terribly wrong there. I shot a larger boar from the front in the pinhole with my 358 Norma. What an effect the bullet almost cleaved the entire body of an approximately 350 pound boar (175) kg. I found the bullet in the back of that boar's butt. Absolutely perfect mushroom on that bullet. I have only found 2 bullets in animals from 358 Norma that most often go straight through. My 358 Norma is probably the last rifle I sell. Good effect not so dangerous recoil to shoot with.

Nosler Part. Are much better but nit as accurate... Boutique bullet makers charge, such a huge premium for their products. When you factor in all the testing required, deciding on a bullet... Load work up, accuracy testing, required to prove a bullet accuracy in your barrel. At 2$ plus a bullet... is such a large expense. Speers & Noslers work wonderfully...

@@cw2a That was FL Norma .358 mag ammo It broke up inside the two animals I shot , and it splintered like it was a shot cartridge . Small pieces everywhere and totally erupted into a destruction that ruined much meat . I so wish they had kept on using Woodleigh or Swift in the cartridge . As some of their own bullets are compromises and have to use in different types of ammo . But sadly .358 is neglected a bit, but it was the same with earlier types of their own makes in .358 NM ammo earlier also . So I went to .375 instead of .

@@MrPh30 I thought the Oryx a bonded bullet? I have not had it shatter or splinter. I have never recovered one. But its suspect as Im moving it faster then 2800. I see more destruction on bones. On broad side, lungs it seems fine. Quarter ta 1/2 dollar exits.

@@cw2a Yea it’s a bonded bullet , but it was something we ( who was there that day with me) , after seeing much bullets . It must have been different heat treated during extrusion before lead filled and then heated up . Too brittle to begin with likely .

@@MrPh30 I had a Gold Dot Rifle bullet grenade on me once. It too is a "better" Bonded bullet. Speer explained I was using it beyond velocity designs... Im not sure of Normas velocity design perimeters... but it comes factory loaded as you mentioned. My impact velocities and admittedly I have only use it a couple times. Was approx 2760/2775 impact velocity. (2850 Muzzle)

The 358 Norma is under bored compared to other big game magnums. 35 Remington, 358 Winchester, 350 Remington magnums , and 35 Whelen are all American cartridges. A 35 caliber case should be based on a full length 375H&H case or 416 Rigby case for 35 caliber to reach its full potential plus a greater selection of .358 bullets. A 300 gr .358 bullet would be ideal. A 35 caliber magnum should split the difference in power between a 340 Weatherby magnum and 378 Weatherby magnum. 35 caliber was a more popular big game cartridge in the past before the smaller bore magnum cartridges came out.

Its a good bullet! I find just lil "tougher" then the Hornady or Oryx even. All are pretty good. IMHO, The Partition is "best" for readily available bullets.

@@cw2a The 250 grain Hotcor is inexpensive and it works really well. When you shoot a 300 pound boar in the side the bullet leaves the other side making a golf ball sized exit hole.

Love 35’s but dont see the point. Theres nothin the 338’s cant do for North America, and not legal for dangerous game in africa for some countries with min cal of 9.3mm or 375. If you need more than 338, the 375 ruger and h&h are phenomenal. No wonder it didn’t catch on

Big bears, African game...if you load down, fine for American game. Recoil is a challenge. Recoil induced flinch makes for poor shooting.
