I love my 85 1.4 as well as it’s by far my favorite lens and most used. However, maybe I should play with my 50mm 1.8 a little more often as instead I tend to break out my versatile 24-70 2.8. Nice video and beautiful images and thank you for sharing

I keep debating whether I should buy a 50 or 85mm F1.4 for my new prime. I sold recently the (Canon 50mm F1.4) I had as it's a very old and weak lens imo and is barely usable at it's lowest aperture. I hate also having to swap lens on a shoot so to avoid traveling also with too many lens what I've done this time around instead of using a (16-28 + 50 + 70-200) I now use a (Tamron 24-70 F2.8 + Canon RF 70-200 F2.8) so that way I have the full range of 24 to 200 with only 2 lens, all at F2.8 which is still pretty good imo and much more versatile. I hate when I have lens that overlap cause I know I will mostly always use the same one and I wouldn't want to throw down the drain a few hundred, mostly when quality lens are about 700-1000$USD. There's something worth noting that I think haven't been said in the video, it's that wider lens can be INTIMIDATING to some models, mostly if you're shooting with amateur people who aren't use to modeling with photographers and they can feel that you are too much in their bubble, which makes them less natural on the pictures. I know for sure that I am never gonna go with the overpriced and too out of focus F1.2, or with a F1.8 that isn't enough of a diff versus my F2.8 ... and shame on Canon for making a RF 50mm F1.8 but no F1.4 which would had been far more needed imo. So now the real question is, yes the 50mm is more versatile overall but is it also for portraits or if you want a "portrait-only lens" then the 85mm would be the better choice cause honestly if I want general-purpose versatility or that I'll do non-portrait stuff, I will always pick my stabilized 24-70 F2.8 instead, and like the salesman said at 70mm F2.8 it's gonna have a same or better bokeh than 50mm F1.8 anyway.

I started as an urbex photographer with a 16-35 f4L IS and did my first modelshoots with the Sigma 35 Art, but there was too much background and modelphotographers focus as much on the model as possible. Then I sold it to buy the fenomenal Sigma 50 Art when it came out, but Sigma was producing many new lenses and shortly after this the 85 Art was launched. I had a while 50 Art & 85 Art, the 50 seemed difficult to sell, but this weekend I finally sold it! 85 Art for me!

TYSM for this succinct comparison. It's fascinating to me that everyone suggests that 50mm perspective most closely compares to our everyday human perspective, because my eyes see the world more akin to 85mm lens. Why is that?!

Great info, TY!!! I do feel the 3 image comparison would have been better if you kept the same subject frame fill as you did in the 35 and 50. Apples to apples. You stated that all 3 were about equal in that regard...not true; please review again and I feel you will agree. Subscribed with notifications...TY!

@6:18 isn't the 85 mm on apsc equivalent to 135 on full frame, so to achieve 85 mm of full frame on apsc we need to have 50 mm on apsc. Please clarify?
