In this video I tackle essential repairs to the lower passenger door hinge area in preparation of A-pillar fab/replacement. I did have some production issues along the way with this one and lost some film...but managed to pull this together as a reference none the less. Enjoy!

Appreciate that...I pulled it together but had this been another level of car...I'd have done a neater job but...it'll paint up just fine I think.

It's nice you made a video on this area of a door ------ I think this area is bad in one way or another on these doors ------- On my '38 I picked up a few months ago -----one of the hinge areas needs attention ----- one door --- the skin is cracked about three inches right above the hinge ------- the skins on either door are solid at the bottom ------ some work needed on the bottom inside area on both ------- BUT ------ I think your video on this will be very helpful to people ----- this area becomes weak ---- gets abused ----- we come along and ------ WOW ------ GREAT CAR ------ let's take her home and -------- what have I got myself into ------- BUT IT'S ALL GOOD ------ a challenge at times but in time we work it out and we feel good on how we accomplished it --------- Curious ---- there is a --- LOT --- of stress in this area ----- what gage metal did you form your pieces from? --------- First day of Fall tomorrow ----- already had to layer the clothes here in the N.W. -------- Thank You for your time spent in giving us this video ----- See Ya ----- on your next one -------- Rodney ------------- Day before yesterday was ------ "National Pirates Day" --------- How much do you think it cost a Pirate back then to pierce an ear? ---------------------- Why ----- it was just a ---- Buccaneer

Hey Rodney....glad you liked that coverage of the door repair. As I see with this 36....the windscreen jamb eventually drained out thru this area either intentionally or unintentionally....it's a total Rot Fest all the way down. As for the metal used...I suspect it was all 20ga. I had some heavier stuff I could have used for that support but did not in the end...in hindsight it may have been a better choice but the adjacent metal was causing me troubles and I had a thought a heavier gage may not play well with the original parent metal. I'd suspect a more mechanical attachment may have been necessary in that case but that's pure unqualified speculation on my part. Thanks for the comment!

Larry. You have your work cut out for you. You seem to have the skill set to accomplish it though. If I interrupt your concerns on the upper and lower door hinges. They are different in design top to bottom. Factory welded as shown. Reversed knuckles as described. As for the A pillar. The outside cowl skin folds into the door opening and is spot welded to the boxed vertical structure. At the hinge pockets. There is a void from the outside to slide the door hinge into. Once in, the layering is in order. Outside folded skin, Hinge plate, Thick metal sandwiching the boxed vertical structure with three sleeves for the hinge bolts, sandwiched with thick metal on the inner backside. All to accommodate 3 inch 5/16 nf slotted bolts. Source out the bolts to shed light on the outcome. I hope this helps. Cheers

Mike....appreciate the vote of confidence. I do hope my results stack up to a legitimate repair. I've found myself to routinely be overly optimistic in the projects I tackle. As for the reversed bottom hinge... Am I to understand that the top and bottom hinge actually do not face the same way? I'll need to clear that up very soon as I'm working that area now. R/ Boxcar

So, yes the hinges don't face the same way. With reference to the mounting on the door. The top hinge to the door is the female part. The bottom to the door is the male part. Both hinged are different to each other. My mistake, the hinge bolts are 2" course. Slotted pan. The collars, sleeves through the vertical structure are about 3/4". The top backside ties in with a gusset to the cowl crease to form strength. The bottom backside ties into the cowl bottom web structure tied to the floor toe board risers. I hope this makes it clearer. Perhaps.

@mikebeattie2670 that is such an odd hinge arrangement. I had a suspicion though as they were both welded and riveted... I Appreciate the followup Mike.

Mike....if you happen to have an inside measurement on those A pillars I'd take it...just so I can keep that honest thru the repairs as well. Thanks for your help with info.

Gotta love it when a plan comes together, even if it takes a few tries LOL. I think that's going to work out pretty well. Is the other door ok in that area?

Pretty sure those door hinges are on the correct way at the start. They're supposed to be opposite of each other
