I don't care what people say about the economic and political problems of Greece, and particularly Athens - it is an EXQUISITE city! It's a World Heritage and UNESCO city that is there for the world to enjoy! It's the birthplace of democracy and so many other things that the Greeks gave us. It is absolutely gorgeous with all its monuments everywhere you turn! So, so beautiful, as well as the rest of the country like the gorgeous islands! I know because I've been there several times and it is a breathtakingly gorgeous city and country! Happy New Year Greece! May it be a prosperous one!

Athens is one of the oldest named cities in the world, having been continuously inhabited for at least 5000 years.[1] Situated in southern Europe, Athens became the leading city of Ancient Greece in the first millennium BC, and its cultural achievements during the 5th century BC laid the foundations of Western civilization. I completely agree. Greece is an incredible country! While I like a lot of countries I fell in love with Greece, the only country on the planet that did that. Greece has 80% mountains, possesses 20% of all the Ultra peaks in Europe (mountains that rise more than 1500 meters out of it's lowest surrounding area), it has 16.000 km of the most crystal clear sea and beaches, 6000 islands each with their own history, local culture,cuisine,traditions and dances. Unequaled history and culture spanning 12.000 years+ from Paleolithic till 7000 BCE, Neolithic - 7000-3200 BCE, Minoan 3650-1200 BCE, Cycladic 3300-2000 BCE, Mycenaean 2000-1200 BCE, Classical Greece 800-65 BCE, Roman period, Greek empire of Byzantium 300 AD-1453 AD, and traces of Turkish, Arab, venetian occupations. Everywhere you go there are brown traffic markers of historical, cultural monuments in every village, town, city and rural landscapes. The food is also why I fell in love. It's absolute heaven and angels on my tongue. And the greatest treasure of all is not any of this, nor the sun, climate and so on. It's the most warm hearted people I have met. Nowhere in any of my travels have I come to know people that are so hospitable, kind, always giving treats, presents, even if I know them just for 30 minutes. These things I can never forget. The combination is unique and very rare in the world. Being able to witness incredible and vast mountain ranges with spectacular nature, but on the same day being able to go to swim in the most beautiful bluest clearest waters, to visit incredible historic, cultural or archaeological sites, eat heavenly and have very living, warmhearted people people is why this country is so incredible. It triggers all the senses intensely.

I had no idea that so many Greeks knew how to speak English so well. It makes sense of course, but it's surprising. You take into account the other European countries featured in the '36 Hours' series and this is by far one with the most people exclusively speaking in English when English is not the official language of the country (aside from the feature on Copenhagen.) I could only wish that people in the States were more inclined to learning other majorly spoken languages also.
@ilianakostarigka89510 жыл бұрын
Greeks study English from a very young age! We must do that to find a job here and to study abroad and not only English but also German, French, Italian and Spanish
@pinkracoon010 жыл бұрын
i also wished Greeks weren't forced to speak English in this video...Where is the state affected by financial crisis.. austerity measure-ridden anomic state...? last year I read about Greece...: an elementary school girl has fainted in her class because she wasn't eating well, etc..I think Americans/Britons usually see other world only with tinted sun glasses .. they paint other society with their own color..making others forciblly speaking english..that's why, this video look like talking about somewhere in US..in my eye..
@sotosoul10 жыл бұрын
True. Quite a few are able to communicate in other languages as well; French, Spanish, German and Italian are some examples. Being social with foreigners is, unarguably, part of the hellenic culture!
@aurelliacornellia10 жыл бұрын
The majority of the Greeks learn foreign languages. First of all, we are touristic country. Also language learning, is very important in finding a job in my country and that is why several young people learn to speak more than one language. Finally, it is among our characteristics to be open to the "new" and to be hospitable and this is something we have inherited from our ancestors! So anytime you visit Greece , communication will definately not be a problem!

He died more than 70 yrs ago (I'm 42) w/out ever telling anyone about where exactly he came from or about his people. So, aside from his name & coming by boat from Greece we know absolutely nothing about him. That's why I'd give anything to be able to go there & find the missing pieces of the puzzle. One can always dream.*

Athens has FANTASTIC SUBURBS so close to sea and the north. The southeast suburbs are gorgeous with beautiful new buildings , sea like being on an island, SPACIOUS ROADS , BIG STREETS AND CLEAN . NORTHERN SUBURBS are green , clean, with excellent construction and neoclassical buildings. Hi ! I work in NY city, originally from Albania. Never been to Athens, but I have people who are my friends, have been there. Their view is Athens is a nice city to live, lots of sun, a metropolis of South, really good food, since the abundance of the sun makes the food tasty. But they say Athens appears chaotic, not really good planning, even though its a nice European city, can not be called beautiful. Albanians though like to visit Athens, not only the one who work there but also people with money like t spend money there . and I have it on my plans to do so. As for history I agree accept from Rome no other city has as much history as Athens. Greeks also have an early tradition of education, so the average Greek is literate, and I am not surprised by their knowledge of English. I dont know if Athens is expensive or not.

If you loved the place, you should come in Thessaloniki instead! : ) Everything Athens has, plus less crowded/congested. OK, no classical ruins, but we compensate with unique Roman/Byzantine/medieval ones... (Being a Thessalonikian, I like Athens myself, -for a weekend at least. But I much prefer it as it was just after the 2004 Olympics. A true ``golden`` modern age...)

Thank you for your kind comments. Athens has much to offer a tourist. This shows that the video is small compared to what is there. Many museums (archaeological museum, the Byzantine museum, museum of modern art, folk art museum, children's museum), music hall, a zoo with all kinds of wildlife. There is a range of works of art with old objects. There is the Acropolis and Lycavetus. Philopappus Hill, the hill of the Areopagus, the oldest court. In Athens the Republic was created. There are still lots who taught Plato, Aristotle, etc. There are underground transport connecting all areas of Athens. Metro, tram, Suburban train. There are two large parks in the city center. National Garden and Champs de Mars. In summer there are beaches for swimming a few minutes from the city center, fully equipped, there are historical areas such as Plaka. This is a neighborhood just below the Acropolis, museums, restaurants, cafes, and beautiful old houses. Finally there is the port of Piraeus, where you can travel to all the islands of the Aegean. I hope to come to Athens and enjoy your holiday.

Nice video. Good for tourists, as my father would say. Real greeks, on real greek salaries, cannot afford to frequent the restaurants mentioned. Several people have made this point. I would add it's not a "social class" thing, but a MONEY thing. The two (even in the social classed of Athens) are not necessarily related. Real people would visit the souvlaki place and maybe a cafe once or twice a week. I USED to live there. I left, and only go back for holidays, when the better money I earn abroad goes a lot further.
@martinkent3334 жыл бұрын
One of the world's most fabulous tourist destinations! Historically, Athens has always had a top heavy government, which allows Athenians and visitors to ignore their duties and responsibilities. The result is traffic terror. When in Athens, don't behave like an Athenian. Obey ALL traffic laws. It's bad taste to added to Athen's traffic nightmare. The world would blossom If the residents and tourists ever accept their responsibilities and Athen's streets, civil servants, communities and adults finally became law-abiding, ethical and conscientious. Imagine! I'm going there soon...

Ermm this was the real and common face of Athens! The high society of Athens was no where to be seen in this video.....I live here so I should know. In other words you watch the news and believe everything you see and hear which is a shame because they are the ones miss leading you. High society in Athens remains unknown to foreign people but if they discovered it they would love it. Anyway not to say Athens hasn't suffered because it has but as a person living here I never understand the bad reputation Athens gets from the media. It's such a vibrant and alive city like no other city I've ever lived in....and I mean ever. I love Athens and think many other people would too if only they experienced her properly.

Look we greeks are under turmoil yes but we can still live life like normal humans and still be our own national culture. Greece is a very different country compared to other European countries. From Athens.

G.A Leopold I can understand your hate ,but why all the lies? Athens is like New York ,rich and not so rich areas ,clean and dirty depending on the area as well.Point out the positives not only the negatives.

Italy has cities like that too mate. I've been to Naples and the buildings, litter, and smell were gross as well. This is what we can urban decay.

Paris is the same way too! Pee and vomit everywhere...from the airport to center of the city. San Francisco may be worse, beggars and drug addicts too, along with their pee and vomit on every corner.
