I would tactfully suggest that though by not pulling forwards at the end of the parallel park you can pull off yourself without reversing you will then prevent the car behind from being able to move off without first reversing - certainly the WV Passat in the video couldn't get out as Reg stopped right at the rear of the space?

It’s almost always better to drive into a space when shopping for the simple reason that you have access to the boot when returning laden with bags. People clambering past the adjacent cars with bags often do damage to bodywork. When reversing out, just use caution. I have a ‘station car’ that I use exclusively for shopping and- you guessed it, trips to the station for my London commute, because car parks are so hard on cars. The dents and dings I have had to repair over the years have been legion. It seems to me that the more expensive my car the more likely it was to be ‘trolley dented’ (normally some idiot opening their door into it). My Porsche was a particular favourite for that. Having said that, this was a good video and Reg is right, parking is often neglected as a skill. Of course it doesn’t help that cars are wider now than the 1930’s spaces we are forced to use.

Good tips. Slow car, fast hands. Minimizing reversing. Important, especially with trailer.

I'm currently teaching my partner to drive. Annoyingly, the driving test makes you reverse through a full right angle into a parking bay. This is something that a) I'm struggling to teach as I never usually do it (I do as you did and shunt forwards to 45 degrees) and b) is an absolute ball ache in my mk1 Yaris, where, legend has it, the C-pillar blind spot has its own postcode!

Why straighten the wheels? If you had to do a parallel park in a much tighter space, I alway advise to keep the wheels pointing away from the curb, if you got in you'll alway make it out depending on if the car in front has moved or not. Making sure we follow hwc 252.

(Showing my age) I passed my test before reversing cameras. One skill I was taught for both manouvres is dipping electric side mirrors before starting the manouvre. For the parallel park it does help get close to the kerb on narrow streets, and useful it its a manouvre you dont regularly do. For the reverse park domit on the side(s) if there is no car in the next space to help line up on. For the reverse park my examiner looked for a right angle manouvre in order to demo you could do that when required (still find that hard so I still practice when opportunity arrises. With reversing cameras I like tomthink of it as an exrtra mirror, and forman extra safety check ag the start of the manouvre. They are good for getting the final length positioning of the car spot on. Rarely drive into a space (unless drive thought) but cameras are very wide angle somdo help with safety on a reverse out. My next vehicle will definately have one. Do emphesise onnthe reverse park the gap uou leave atnthe start between uounand thw vehicle to the front so you can start steering earlier to get into tight spaces (BUT cant do that on narrow e.g. one way street with cars on opposite side of the road). The test did make me a better parker, BUT always need to keep practicing. Many thanks again. P.S. (The hardest bit to learn) If you have dipped your mirrors, and been congratulated on a great manouvre, don't forget to put them back before driving off . . .

Reg, you are the expert but just wondered about your final position when you did the reverse parking. By not moving forward is it possible you could hinder the car behind you from getting out? It looked to me like you were not in the centre of the space, more towards the car behind. Just wondered what your thoughts are. This is what I picked up from the video anyway.

Nice video! My tips to add are to: 1) approach using the System 2) limit your roll speed to within your steering control 3) apply a universal parking checklist to enter the parking bay: a) Miss the adjacent cars. b) Centre your rear. c) Then finalise your body angle and stop position.

‘Approach using the system’ = drive up to the space ‘Limit your roll speed to within your steering control’ = manoeuvre slowly ‘Miss adjacent cars’ = *#@!! ‘Centre your car’ = ditto ‘Finalise your body angle and stop position’= Park But you forgot a few things: 1. Apply the manual stationary retardation device = apply hand brake 2. Disengage the engine activation circuits= turn the car off 3. Egress the vehicle using the personnel portal= get out 4. Apply the vehicular security protocols= lock it 5. Perambulate from the vehicle= walk away Wow!

@@gr-s5775 Approach using system means use IPSGA to pull up at the start point so others know your intentions instead of honking or stealing your space. Limit roll speed to within steering control - those that need to exit and redo did not manoeuvre slowly enough. The Universal Parking Checklist allows the driver to focus on the priorities in the right order until stopped, ready for the shutdown sequence.

Another well explained video. Any opinion on lowering a window slightly to gain sound information during the reverse phase of a manoeuvre?

Use every bit of information you can, regardless of it's source. When scanning your surroundings, a reflection in a window should just form part of that scan, rather than being something you specifically look for.
