Experience this take-off from Kansas City International Airport (KMCI) followed by sightseeing over downtown Kansas City, all in 360º virtual reality (VR).
Join me in the cockpit of N70TB, my A36 Beechcraft Bonanza, on a flight from Kansas City to Cedar Rapids, IA. Up in the sky, you can change the view to your liking and look at every detail inside and outside the cockpit.
The VR format is a new adventure for me - please let me know in the comments section how you like it, and what ideas for future 360º virtual reality flying videos you have.
Thanks for watching, and as always, a 'like' and a subscription here on KZbin are appreciated if you enjoy this video.

Hi. I do like the Insta360 OneX, though I don't use it very often. In most of the videos I make, I know at the time of recording what exact angle I want to capture - and then the traditional cameras (like GoPro) have an advantage over the 360 degrees cameras in terms of clarity and resolution. Having said that, if your goal is to create VR / 360 degrees videos, the OneX is still a fine camera. I hope this helps! - Martin

I think the 360° view would be a good change of pace from your normal setup. The loss of resolution was the thing I didn’t like the most. Every time I am in a Bo, I wonder what knucklehead decided that the landing gear lever should be stashed in that position. What year did they switch to the dual yokes? The throwover yoke seems to take up a lot of real estate.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 6 жыл бұрын
You are right, the loss of resolution is noticeable. 16 megapixels sounds like a lot, until you have to crop it to a tiny fraction of that. The throw-over yoke was replaced with the more conventional dual yoke on 1984. I actually like the throw-over yoke; it gives a lot of legroom to the passenger. Regards, Martin

Nice video! Great Job! Watched it on Desktop PC in 5K (KZbin gave me 5K option in addition to 4K). Watched it again on my phone in VR Mode on a cheap ($9) VR "headset" too (i.e. phone holder for VR Mode in KZbin). For those that have zoom issues on your computer, use keyboards + and - buttons, this way it will work better than scroll wheel which causes the page to scroll down. Martin: KZbin does take some time processing for videos and 4K and VR take longer. What I do is schedule videos, this way after the upload is done it gives youtube the opportunity to process the video before people see it.

Thanks, Martin. Enjoyed the 360 view, but not as important to me as it might be to some. I noticed the 4 white PAPI as another viewer stated, but just thought you liked a higher approach. (If so, me too, BTW). Now, a camera focused on the panel with zoom capability, that would be cool. And, slowmo to see GPS operation and other instrument controlling would also be cool. This is the same computer and browser I use to watch all of P1D's 360 videos, so I don't think it was on my side. He used to lock his 360 to a compass direction, which was even more annoying since when the plane turned, the view turned. :-) At least you didn't do that (and he changed it after the first couple of 360 videos), which I appreciate. I watch aviation videos on a second monitor while I work, so I can't interact with it easily as I watch. The lock on where I point it is much appreciated and makes it much easier to watch. Thanks, Martin!

Hi Kevin, The headset I use is called Halo, made by Quiet Technologies. It doesn't have Bluetooth built in; I have that through my audio panel. Though there's a separate device available called BlueLink which turns any aviation headset into a Bluetooth headset for music and phone. I like the Halo a lot. Very light, it feels like it's almost not there. In-ear headsets aren't for everyone, but many people do like them because of the complete lack of pressure. Best regards, Martin

Unfortunately, 360° cameras aren't perfected yet. I got zoomed in trying to look at the airspeed indicator and couldn't zoom back out. Even in good conditions though, you can see everything, but at the same time, you really can't see anything well. 20-50 vision.

You summarized it well, Alan. It's not (yet) the media to show anything in great detail. I think I'll just use it occasionally to provide something a little different. Regards, Martin

Freaken awesome, felt like I was your passenger and I'm only watching it on an old laptop, thinking about investing in a VR set-up now. Love being able to see all around the cabin and out the windows. What camera is that?

Thank you, Mike. The camera is the Insta360 ONE X. I do not yet have a VR setup myself, but this may be the time to get one. Regards, Martin

Interesting perspective. I felt like I was having a 60's psychedelic episode with the 360 degree! LOL.

Very cool but the quality is less than your normal cameras. Is that inherent with this type of equipment?
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 6 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Yes, the video quality is somewhat degraded from "normal" videos. My 360-degree camera captures eight times the number of pixels compared with my GoPro recording HD, but only a small fraction of those are visible at any given time - depending on which angle you choose. Regards, Martin

Interesting perspective Martin! Although I am not much into 360 videos, the quality of the video is much better than some footage I have seen before. Good thing is I can adjust the position to fell like your copilot! ;-))

has definite possibilities yeah, maybe resolution isn't greatest, but being able to focus on what may be important to the viewer at the moment trumps the loss Also a bit of a color distortion --- the PAPI showed 4 whites until crossing the threshold and red halos started showing on one of the lights....

uh oh...wierd horizontal split screen image, both with low resolution, in addition to stuttering image, finally stopping altogether. I don't think the technology is sufficient to produce desired outcomes. but kudo's for trying. Personally, I prefer the standard video format which offers higher resolution.

Would you do me a favor and try it again? Somebody else wrote that right after KZbin published it, it looked weird and distorted, but then a little later it's been working for everybody. Thank you for the feedback; I suspect most of my future videos will revert to the old format, with an occasional 360/VR one. Regards, Martin

I get inconsistent results watching 360 videos. This one worked fairly well in except when I tried to go to full screen view. P1D's recent video I could not rotate the view. On a video posted by Welker farms, I could pan and zoom in and out, however when he turned his farm implement the view did not turn with him and I had to use the pan to keep the forward view. But on this video the view turned with the plane. Don't know why different videos act different. Is it different cameras?
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dean, I think we are all still learning and experimenting with this relatively new format. In particular, in my very first attempt, I had to turn the viewer when the plane turned, like you described from the farm video - I didn't like that and found a way to keep the view aligned with the plane, resembling a person sitting inside the plane. That was a configuration option in the software which extracts the camera footage and converts it into a format I can edit. I am sure the various cameras are quite different... I'm just starting to dive into this VR topic myself... Best regards, Martin

@martinpauly

Thanks for the feedback, Jim. I realize the image quality of the 360 videos is not at the same level as regular cameras. However, I am surprised to hear the picture was very distorted - that sounds more like you were viewing it on a platform which doesn't support 360-degree videos. You should be able to see an undistorted image, and to pan around to select an angle. Best regards, Martin
@JimPoston1
@JimPoston1 6 жыл бұрын
Martin... OK I'm watching it again and it is definitely different and better. I don't know what the difference is, but the image is clear. What was distorted before was the view not the clarity. Anyway it's better now. But I must say I prefer the regular camera view. :-))
