So why are some people that have done banding of fertilizer getting out of it cause they haven't see a return on investment yet. They have been doing it for 4 or 5 years already.

Right on. Probably because it sells equipment. Funny all this pie in the sky stuff sounds great, but if you do it all you'll be bankrupt. There is also a tendency to believe it works just because you're a fan of it.

how do you not see a return on investment of reducing fertilizer bill by 50% and reducing a lot of tillage costs?

Most people don’t see a response for several reasons: 1. Not using the correct NPK formulation needed for that field. 2. The starter formulation being used may contain heavy metals which has been shown to delay emergence or damage seeds. 3. NPK may not be the limiting factor-Sulfur, or a micro nutrient may have been needed instead of just NPK. 4. PH may be away from ideal which is causing issues during the growing season. Take tissue tests around V2 to see what the plant is telling you about the starter systems approach vs. what the complete soil test shows. So if. Manganese was short on the soil test & you didn’t address it, will probably show up on the tissue test. Probably not going to see a response to your starter.
