As a mechanic I have never seen a 5th gear fail. I have always towed in 5th in my troopy and 100 series. I understand the concept, but never seen it happen and don’t think I ever will

On a gu patrol 5th doesn't normally break it just falls off the spline as you would've seen after 2004 they went to a thicker longer spline

seen a few Farm utes with fucked 5th gear, some cruisers in amongst them ...definitely does happen, not towing up hills and lugging in overdrive as well and regular oil changes will help

My 5th gear just started vibrating the shifter after I i hit a pothole on the motorway. No other gear does it do you know what it could be? Could it just need a wheel balance on tbe left front wheel that hit the small pothole.front wheel drive petrol car

But when I have towed on the highway in 4th once I get just over 80 she wants to go to 5th coz she will start reving to high?? So when towing do we need to just only do 80/85 in 4th in a 1hz 😅

Bit of a common misconception there, 1HZs are quite happy to sit at 3000rpm all day. Nothing wrong with doing 100 in 4th

Knowing at which speed and rpm you A/T is shifting into next gear will help lots

Steve talk to Your local auto trans shop. Can get electronic tow packages biggest concern is your converter going in and out of lock up continuously.

U can manually put it in 4th but then u won't have low rims as automatic cars have some type of system that automatically lowers rpm whilst cruising. I noticed this in my nissian pathfinder wile towing camping trailer

The Nissan shaft she is showing is out of the cast iron gearbox FS5R50B used in the 4.2 Nissan up to sept 2004, the better gearbox is the FS5930A all aluminium housing gearbox used in early Nissan Navara and Patrol with the ZD30 3 litre engine, the 5th gear with reverse is located in a separate housing so looks like a better engineered gearbox, same gearbox as used in the 2.5 Nissan. the Toyota gearbox was first used with the 2.4 engine in the 4x2 and was still used in Hilux's 4x4 with 3.0 litre turbo, so with the design of the gearbox you cannot tow in 5th, the Nissan should be able to tow in 5th with the later gearbox as its a better gearbox than Toyota., if you can tell me any different please do, I own both vehicles and the Nissan is a bigger better and smoother gearbox.

Thanks so much for the video, excellent in understanding what goes on there. I have a 76 STW 4.2 1HZ with aftermarket turbo. I know, I know, must not tow in 5th while trailing (Guilty) - Only use as an overdrive (Guilty)..... I am in South Africa, and while still running fine after 188 000km there is defiantly more noise in 5th than 4th. I am waiting for the dreaded day! Do you ship your components to South Africa? Can it be done if you are on a flat or down hill grade with perhaps only 3000lbs. P.S. I am also specifically referring to a Borg Warner world class T5. Thanks in advance.
