I’ve been collecting jazz since the late 1980s and was given my start by a jazz vocalist and her spouse who is a music professor in a Vancouver college who is a jazz expert. But I’m learning tons watching your channel. The Oliver Nelson and Blakey and JM albums are in my top 10-15 all time. Just loving the new Analogue repressing of Black Saint and Mingus x 5. Just amazing sound

@@TheJazzShepherd They were all Impulse label reissues. I prefer to avoid the snap crackle and pop and get the new stuff where I can but not always possible. We've all got our wee foibles. With the record stores being closed I tend to stack up a want list and then keep an eye out on a good price for sealed or NM copies... must be the tight fisted Scot in me! 1. John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, gatefold, NM (fingers crossed it is in good nick). 2. Roy Haynes Quartet - Out of the Afternoon, sealed. This one has been on my watch list since Teddy (Eat Sleep Vinyl) recommended a couple of years back. 3. Oliver Nelson - The Blues and Abstract Truth, sealed. 4. Sonny Rollins - Alfie, gatefold, sealed. Another Teddy recommendation I think. I know you weren't recommending this album today (too much love but an greatalbum I think you said) but it had been on my list for a long time and when you mentioned it I nipped in to check the price. At £10 it was rude not to! Enjoy the rest of your day, it's early afternoon here and I'm going to enjoy the sunshine.✌🏻Jamie

Dan, I'm not sure I agree with you re: Elvin leaving Trane and then playing not so out, Yes, he joined Duke very briefly after departing, but the New Elvin Jones Trio with Garrison and Joe Farrell and two record dates with Ornette were out weren't they?
@TheJazzShepherd Жыл бұрын
I feel those were the exceptions...look at his work at Atlantic...his side work as well.... tons of bluesy rootsy stuff.... Nothing he does after Trane seems to be very close to where Trane was in 64 65 etc.....

Insightful as always, Shep. Making me think; when it comes to my own collecting, label or artist? Been collecting the small run of Black Jazz Records stuff that's getting reissued, and it's such a diverse range of music throughout only 20 odd records. I'm thinking I might go this way with the major labels, space/ finances permitting! Peace, brother.. ✌️😁👍

I'm I the only person who thinks Coltrane's Africa/Brass is one of his best? I feel like no one talks much about that one. I'm newer to jazz and Africa/Brass was one of the albums that made jazz click for me. I would love to hear what more seasoned jazz aficionados think about Coltrane's first Impulse!
