I've finally settled on this configuration for myself. I was leaning toward an F150 3.5 ecoboost for the longest time, but I fell in love with this I6 duramax/10-spped combo. It's the perfect 1/2 ton truck powertrain. The smoothness, efficiency and capability make this the only "total package" powertrain in the segment. I'm planning to order a 2023 RST doublecab after the revised motor is released. My hope is that they upgrade to a chain driven oil pump, which will eliminate my only (minor) concern with this engine. Also, I'm a big fan of using a high quality diesel fuel additive in every tank. I used Opti-Lube XPD in vehicles over the years and I swear by it. It absolutely improves performance and keeps your fuel delivery system clean and properly lubricated. I hope you will keep this truck and continue doing periodic updates. I'm very interested in seeing how this powertrain holds up over time. There aren't many youtubers that keep vehicles long enough to provide long term analysis.

What's this about additives in every tank? I have this truck and its my first diesel. Any help would be appreciated.

@@RickyB418 OptiLube XPD is a well known, highly respected diesel fuel additive, but there are others to choose from as well. You just pour 6 to 8 oz into the tank right before filling up and it boosts the lubricity and other helpful properties of the fuel. The US has notoriously low quality diesel fuel, so it definitely helps. In my experience, it kept the fuel systems in my previous diesels optimized and even helps to protect the delicate emissions systems in modern diesels.

I also have a 2020 RST 3.0 Z71 but double cab. GM just bumped up the oil pump belt to 200,000 miles, so by then it will probably be 250,000 miles so don't worry. It's a great truck and enjoy it. I had trailer mirrors added on it and they did a computer update on the system to make everything work.

I have a ‘21 LT Z71 crew cab. It’s been a great truck. 19,000 miles so far. I have had 5-6 “extended crank” or “long start” incidents. I have researched the issue quite a bit. GM has acknowledged it and issued a technical service bulletin. Initially it sounded like a nightmare as people were taking their trucks into dealerships and having complete cab off tear-downs to replace cam positions sensors. This, however, didn’t solve the problem…so last I heard they were leaning towards just doing a software update on the trucks. I just had the software update done with the last dealership oil change. It took about an hour. I do notice when I hit the button to start it that it cranks slightly longer before it fires up. Maybe one second longer?? This issue really hasn’t been a big deal to me. It’s more embarrassing than anything as the truck will crank for 10 or 15 seconds and NOTHING…no fire at all. The few times the long start has happened…I just waited a second and tried to start it again and it fired right up. There was NO WAY I was taking my truck to a dealership and having them doing a cab off repair for that little of an inconvenience. Hopefully the engineers have this permanently solved with the update as I haven’t had it happen in a long time. On a side note I agree…the 3.0L diesel paired with the 10 speed transmission is leaps and bounds ahead of my old 5.3L Tahoe with a 6 speed. No comparisons whatsoever in towing performance or fuel economy. I’ve gotten over 600miles on one tank many times. Compared to 330-360 on the old Tahoe. The one area I’d say It is a bit weak…and this is probably due to the lack of HP compared to the 6.2L (or 5.3L) is when trying to pass cars. Especially if towing a boat or something. The 50-75 mph responsiveness is not great! But I think a lot of diesels are that way. Especially the smaller displacement motors. Overall I highly recommend this engine and transmission. Hoping diesel prices go back down (Build back better!!! 🥴)
@silveradosav3673

Well said all around. I agree a tear down is not worth it for the few instances you have had. Annoying, yes for sure! Also, the passing when in gears 8-10 are not strong by any means. Hope the truck continues to treat you well otherwise! Thanks for the lengthy reply and it’s truly appreciated!

I also have a 2020 3.0 liter diesel in the LT version. I have 35,000 miles on mine and had no issues. I purchased the tow mirrors with the new harnesses. I had the dealer installed them. I had to take it back because the lights did not come on in reverse. They told me they had to recalibrate the mirrors. They work fine now. Not sure what the charge would be for them to calibrate yours but it might be something you check on. They put out ample amount of light when it's dark. I use mine when backing the boat down the ramp early in mornings. So far no complaints.

OK, this would be about the 10th new GM loaded pick up I’ve bought !! $90K in Canada, LOADED… not!! Stupid me! Right after drivin away from the Dealer….. stop NO TRAILER MIRRORS ! How did I miss that! Was going to pick up my new 5th. wheel trailer! Here is where my/ your storey starts! After this beauty was my 5th one, same dealer, 1 hr. after owning it, I thought they would “step up” & help! ! Hear we go ! @ my cost of +/- $2,800.00 ?? ,, 2 new trailer mirrors, 3 wiring harnesses, new mirrors would not “power fold” as my small mirrors! Could not programme the fold issue! What to do,,, many talks to GM . A , +/- $140.00 option, if ordered from factory,, I bought this from their inventory ! Now , after me reading GM web sites,Duramax sites, about 9 months later, I already traded the truck in @ a different dealer,,,, HEAR is / was the problem! “IF “ the dealer would have ordered “ Replacement “Mirrors “ instead of Accessory “ kit mirrors!,! Replace small , with replacement $ 350.00 each mirrors , no harnesses or programmeing nec. Plug & play,, all options work ! What now! Got rid of the truck! We settled on them giving me 2 factory replacement mirrors in original GM boxes to mount on my garage wall ! Your mirrors are GM “Accessory” mirrors, Not GM Replacement mirrors ! If I am Right ! If so your trailer “ back up lights” will work, throw 3 new unnecessary harnesses at the dealer, and do it right! Hope it works out for you! Good luck !

Wow, what an ordeal! I settled with a refund for the unnecessary calibration and 35k GM rewards points for the inconvenience of the spot light not working. I was jot about to take the door panels off again to give them the original harnesses. I have better viewing now when towing, that is the most important part to me. They have still not changed the accessory website to say the spot lights will not be functional. I appreciate them giving what they did to settle the case, but it was sewn out over a course of three months of being persistent every week I talked to them!

Nice looking truck. I have 2020 LT Z71 with 62k miles on it. I just replaced my tires at 50k miles and I went up one tire size so I could get a load range E tire. I have towed my stepsons M3 BMW about 4 times now and i average 18mpg doing that. When not towing i am getting 25mpg to 33mpg depending on where i am driving. I think that GM has down a great job designing this engine and transmission combination. I added an S&B cold air intake and a Banks iDash with the pedal monster. Once Banks releases the Derringer for the 3.0 it will be on my list of upgrades. Thanks for sharing your video.

I'm saving for my retirement truck. Trying to decide do I go 2500 HD again or the 1500 with the 3.0 duramax. I like the fuel economy of the durmax 3.0 liter. I'll probably buy my truck in about 1 year. I want to package the truck with the tow package, but currently it isn't available. The 3.0 duramax and the tow package gets 13,000 tow rating. We want to buy a travel trailer and I think the 1500 with the duramax and tow package is the set up for me. I'm just watching reviews and saving for the truck. I am sorry to hear that. It’s a shame you spend that much on those mirrors and they do not work correctly. So I have some experience on programming sensors, calibration, and adjusting electronically items on Caterpillar equipment. So we have some possibilities. 1 you may want to recheck your connections on the harness. 2 The dealer did not do a full calibration. Not sure if the harnesses that came with your mirrors were plug and play. Just asking? So on my mirrors the lights would come on with the push button in neutral or park but not reverse. So I asked the mechanic what he had to do to get the lights on in reverse. He just said he had to recalibrate it. So I think he just left a step out in the calibration process. If the dealer could not get your lights to come on at all then I would say there is a connection issue. Did each harness have a different part number like one for left mirror and one for passenger? The Ambient temp sensor in on the passenger side. Just my thoughts. I hope you get them to work.

Brakes have been replaced, transmission flush done, has radiator been replaced due to poor plastic side tanks. Shocks might need to be replaced since Z71 Ranchos suck after 40-50k. Other than that, it’s good to go in my mind.

Do you have a part number on the Amsoil ? Have you considered using a fuel conditioner? I’ve been using “hotshots everyday” and noticed a difference in cold starts and idle. Truck seems to run better with it.

@@silveradosav3673 Now on my 10th or 12th Duramax! GM sates NO fuel additives in the glovebox book, nodody reads! Up to 2017, Isuzu made, allways used cp2 then cp3 Bosch pump & Injectors. These are made for Europe diesel fuel. With the thousands complaining of $ 10 K repair bills upon failure, drop 1/2 for poor maintenance,is costly ! The “new” Duramax ( incl. yours ) has a Denzo pump & injectors . Failure rate is Much better ! Now fuel additives, I have “always” every 2nd 130 Litre fill ( now in Canada $ 2.44 per litre ) I put 100 mm of Two Cycle oil in tank before the cha - Ching fill.. Am I lucky ? No… scared of a fuel related failure! The steel geared fuel pump is not lubricated like your Turbo ! Diesel fuel of today with “ low ash “ has little or no lubricity, I give it a little help… no issues from a avid Duramax gear head ! LO L

No, would love too, but money not there with the market trucks are in right now. Plus, with this truck running so well for me at 50k, I hope to keep it to give it to my daughter for when she turns 16. It will be paid off when she get her temps.

Another question: would you have gotten the multi-gate or flex gate, whatever it’s called? I think it’s just a recent option on the Silverados.
@silveradosav3673
@silveradosav3673 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, here is why for me anyways: 1st: I like the bow tie instead of the Chevrolet spelled out. 2nd: it makes the bed more useful and easier to get into in my mind. Also, easier to reach items. Cannot tell you how many times I got wet pants from leaning over the tailgate to reach items! Good question, hope this helped!

From a true pick up truck guy! 10 yrs. & counting on my idea ! Get a 4x6 or 8’ plastic fence lattice. Cut down the middle. Put a 3” wood end & a 1’ side on each side…of each behind cab end . Drill holes for a short rope on each tailgate end of lattice! There you go,,, all the stuff in your box that ends up at the front, just behind cab,,, open tailgate,grab your rope & pull,,, no wet pants ! Now you have two, get me that thing from the front of the truck bed ! AHHA,,, it works cool ! & cheap !

How is the ceramic!?!?! Did it change the look and feel of the exterior?
@silveradosav3673
@silveradosav3673 Жыл бұрын
Don’t be confused by a spray on ceramic coating. It does a tremendous job of protecting the truck for about a week to two weeks at a time. I deep clean my truck almost every time I wash it and it has nothing to offer after that. If you were to just do a quick wash, I am sure it would still have some water shedding ability. I continue to use it because of the ease of use, spray and wipe on, wipe off. Thanks for writing!

I use TEC582 Ceramic Detail Spray from Technicians Choice. It is a very affordable spray that you will use every time you wash your vehicle. It is not meant to be a replacement for the longer lasting applicators coatings. It smells like pina colada!

If diesel prices return to where they should be, it’s a no brainer! For now, it’s hard to have people jump ship when the cost of the new truck with the Duramax and the increase in diesel prices gets quite close in expenditures per month….. hold out a bit for the new updated LZO and it should be even better with more HP and Torque all while offering similar MPG. Only time will tell!

@@watchmanexpert MPG will not make up for not having a payment.... But if you are in the market I wouldn't look anywhere else if you drive the truck everyday and need a truck that will get you around the 500 mile range per tank. I usually see around 525-550ish per tank ususally around 26 MPG..
