36th Ulster Division on 1st July 1916. Battle of the Somme. First World War

My great uncle with the 11th RIR survived that day at the Somme, and my gran related how he told her that he and others lifted the wounded Capt Craig, who was apparently a big man, into a small hand truck. They couldn't move him and had to leave him to be taken prisoner. There were five VCs awarded for bravery on that little patch allocated to the 36th (Ulster) Division straddling the Ancre. The fifth was awarded to a captain of the relieving Yorks battalion at the Schwaben Redoubt the day after the day before. There were also many other brave Irishmen from Connaught and the other Provinces who fought along the line and died that day. Their sacrifice has never been acknowledged, It's fitting that Killaloo has become the official March of the RIR . The Connaught Rangers took it with them to the Somme all those years ago.
