Your videos impress me a lot! You are coming home to the earth and home of your grand parents where only ruins and memories are waiting for you. But you are going on transforming this place in a wonderful new home. I admire your handicraft skills and your efforts. Wish you all the best and a lot of energy!

There is something truly magical about a fire outdoors and roasting chestnuts are so delicious when made this way too. Your new home and farm is such a haven of peace in this often mad and fast paced world of ours. Thank you for sharing your beautiful place with all of us and the journey of building and rediscovering part of your family's heritage with all of us too. Cheers and God Bless you and your family!

Beautiful Joaquim. So wonderful to see the ancient cobbled little roads of Minho, and those stone walls... (like in Ireland) if they could talk !! What I miss most about Minho is the sense of community and friendship amongst the population. They all help each other, then they ask if you are stealing chestnuts! 😂😂Soo funny! They probably know you from when u were a boy. Such great people! "Magustos" and open fires during the "desfolhadas" are some of my most cherished memories of childhood visits to grandparents homestead in Minho; tks for bringing them back. So happy your work is coming along even better now you hv your tools. God bless you.

Hello João! I saw your latest video yesterday. Although you dont post the location of the property, i can see from the mountains behind you exactly where you are because my family has a farm about 3km away from you, and i know the scenery by hard! I also noticed you said you were looking for a place to rent while you are building the property. I think i can help with that, we have a seperate house in our farm that is ready for rent, so if you are interested respond to this comment so we can discuss it further. Love what you are doing by the way, great job! Cheers 🙂

Eating chestnuts is what I miss most about my days of youth in Portugal. To this day we have land with plenty of beautiful ouriço-filled trees. Me and the village kids - when there were kids - would bring down branches of the trees, open the prickly ouriços with our feet and pick at the delicacies inside. It was a question of timing but the inner skin would peel off and we would munch on the sweet and delicate unripe castanha.

I sure hope you got your stuff from Qaasim without too much hassle. When my shipping container came in all of a sudden they wanted to start adding so many charges and so I called my attorney and just said you mind if they send all the receipts to you and you verify that they’re legitimate, she said no problem. I told my custom broker that he was to send all the receipts to my attorney. She’s going to verify everything and all the sudden there were no additional charges and he said a few of them didn’t apply that they didn’t need to be charged and I was so thankful.

So it's work before play. BYW how do you get use to those church bells. I know that many of the villagers, who may not have watches would use them to tell time, remind then of something,. I see that the does the dog get to ride in the " side by side" work vehicle?? . Maybe you could use the outer husks of the chestnuts as fire starters?? Cheers

Nice to see you get your tools, I'm thinking I'll have to do the same when we move there. Did the sea can ship from the East Coast? We lived in Manitoba but now are on Vancouver Island so I know I'll probably pay more. Was it pricey and did you have a 20 or 40 footer? Will you need new chargers for your tool batteries or just using a voltage adapter?
@Joaquim_Conde
@Joaquim_Conde 2 ай бұрын
We shipped it from Toronto through the port of Montreal. The current rate for a 40’ is 8k CAD from Toronto to anywhere within an hour or so from Porto. I’m staying off the grid, so I’ll use split phase inverters that output both 110 and 220 Volts so I can use my Canadian tools etc, as well an any new appliances, tools etc that we may acquire here

I recommend that you consult with your local Portuguese consulate. They are probably the best to advise you on your local options. They have a program where the Portuguese government assists Portuguese nationals and their descendants in many aspects regarding the return to Portugal, including participation in the costs of shipping your belongings back home. Look online, I think it’s called “ Programa regressar a Portugal “

A good question. My interest in self sufficiency includes the production and management of the energy that the homestead will require to function. My grandparents weren’t connected to any grids ( there weren’t any back then) and the homestead functioned well enough to raise four children. In essence they were responsible for producing the energy they required. I believe that I can do the same today. Thank you for your comment and question

IF YOU DOUBLE YOUR TENT- BUY TWO TENTS- ONE SMALLER- AND PUT ONE INSIDE THE OTHER- THE HEAT WILL STAY INSIDE FOR THE COLDER NIGHTS INTO THE FALL & you wont get WET! This is an old technique used by hikers. A small tent for your sleeping bag & bed goes inside a larger tent. It keeps your body heat from being drawn away DURING THE COLD NIGHTS. OR YOU CAN BUY A DOUBLE INSULATED TENT- REVIEWS RECOMMEND AYAMAYA Winter Cold Weather Ultralight Tent- it has double-wall insulation, a full rain fly with a snow skirt. .Even a small heater can keep it cozy inside your bedroom (they have safe TENT battery heaters/you can charge with a SOLAR PANEL). Then the larger tent can be used to store your food & clothes. Remember to never place objects against your tent walls or they will stretch & leak & MAKE SURE you tie the tent down TIGHTLY with PROPER ROPES that will last through WIND STORMS! you are such a hard worker, amazing! Remember to take care of yourself & take breaks. Best of LUCK!
