All takes time Gordon, but you'll get there.

Hi Malcolm, thanks, yes bit by bit. I’m more concerned about doing it well than doing it quick. Honestly though I wish it were warmer so I could spend more time in the workshop. Heating such a big space is impractical without huge cost. 🙂

Hi Gordon may I suggest put the Loctite back in you tool box and never use it again if the has any type of locking device under the head of a nut or bolt All the brake parts are made to self centre One it’s all together you loosen the two big nuts and the adjuster apply the brakes and tighten to self centre so both shoes are the same distance front the drum

Hi Hooter, thanks for your comment. Allowing the brakes to self centre makes perfect sense. Thank you!

Ideally you should never reuse spring washers, of any type. But I admit that if the washer looks good then I will reuse it too. I feel for you with that. Normally, as you tried, you drive the key out by hitting the end with a hammer and chisel. As it is a half moon it should roll out. If not then heat it red hot then bash it out. Hopefully it’s not welded.

On a machine that is unlikely to do a full day’s work in the future, it is a judgement call. If the old ones are ‘compressed’ I replace them. 👍

I’ve never come across a key that would’nt come out before this one. It took a lot of abuse and never even budged! 😂

Just watching your video on the back plate assembly, currently doing my own, should there be a collar over the spring and washer on the rod at back of brake plate?

Hi Richard, not as far as I’m aware. I assume you mean like a rubber boot to protect the spring? I’ve not seen anything like that on the Fergys. If you have any info on this I’d be very interested. Those springs do tend to rust out over the years, which then allows dust and dirt in through the hole around the shaft. The shaft needs that movement to allow it to cope with the relative movement of the brake shoes, so you do need a flexible means of sealing the hole. 👍🙂

Again, this is a late comment/suggestion. That woodruff key has seen better days and your attempts at removal did not work. Possibility of using an oxy/acetylene torch would provide the heat needed. I've found a product named "Nut Cracker" will loosen many things, if allowed the soak time after heating/cooling. My suggestion is based on using the old key as you did. Drill/Tap a hole through the bracket so an "Allen Screw" can be threaded through and lock the bracket to the shaft. You should also drill into the shaft just enough to allow the screw to lock the shaft. Use some copper coat to assist with the installation of the bracket and prevent further corrosion/rust.

Hi Charles, thank you. That certainly was a tough bugger and I intend to prevail over it one day! 😉. An Oxy/Acetylene torch is one of those things that’s on my wish list, but somehow never quite makes it to the top of the list! I’m not sure what you are referring to wrt. Using a grub screw, I may need to review this video again to get your meaning, but it sounds sensible. 👍😉
