You have a beautiful vessel, the Express is my favorite model. The choice in power makes it a world class offshore. I enjoyed all of the video but was a little let down without a sea trial at the end. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Great video! I have a 330EC and you have done everything I wanted to do with my boat. I am going to start with the holly sole. Cats are a little outside my price range. LOL Great Job on the upgrade

Nothing like new running gear. Seems you never notice the vibrations and extra noise untill its all gone. Im sure you had a heck of a difference with those upgrades. These are some of the better built Express out there. Thats alot of work but well worth it.

Thank you for your nice words! Those motors made all the difference. She likes to cruse at about 2300 rpm @ 26-27 knots 15 gph x2. WOT or 2800 rpm runs 33knots (20 or 21 gph). I do have another video you might want to watch on the SeaRay. Its not a sea trial but if you give me a few weeks I will make a video just for you :)

Did the shipyard do all the work? I've thought about upgrading to a bigger boat and re powering with new engines. Looks like your pretty knowledgeable. That's awesome.

No, i did most the work to save money, they did the fiberglassing for bigger exhaust and lifted in the motors. That's about it! it was fun for me but took longer than I wanted. thanks

@fcguy7 The motors worked great but for this boat it was a bit under powered. I usually have lots of people, gear, and a 400 lb dinghy on it. The new motors don't know the difference! Plus it saved about 35-40% fuel at a 6-7 knot faster cruise!

I have a 28ft Uniflight Saltydog. Boy would i like to ditch the twin 270hp 350 Chevy Crusader engines for some diesels. But with how much it would cost i could get a new boat.

Great video. I'm in the process of purchasing the 33 Express. Love the lines of the boat. You boat is fantastic. I see that you took out the carpet and installed the Teak/Holly laminate product. How have you liked it / has it held up well? Cheers!

+Alan Rothfuss Oh you will love the 33! I bought my 37 thinking I would keep it for 5 years and then get something bigger but 5 years turned into 14 and I still dont want to get rid of it! I love the laminate I put in. looks nice and easy install. under the carpet is fiberglass so you might have a few bumps to sand or fill. other than that its GREAT and will last forever! I have since the video done a tone more work$$. not that it needed it but I like to keep everything looking new and fresh! Enjoy your 33!

Have you had any issues with the boat? I am looking at purchasing a 1999 370 hardtop with horizon 454's.
@roger9453
@roger9453 7 жыл бұрын
Nicely done - I am currently looking at a 1998 37EC in San Diego with newly rebuilt Horizon's 385 hp. The 70k for a re power to diesel isn't in the budget, but wonder if adding a pair of super or pro-chargers to bump the torque and HP up might help with performance. 7.4's are great low compression engines and are much better candidates for a supercharger then the high hp 502's. Petro motors have come along way in efficiency, and the addition of supercharging actually increase NMPG, which might be an alternative for me if I go with the gas powered 37 in San Diego. Did you ever consider supercharging? If so what were the con's vs pro, if you have any....many thanks. Btw, have seen you in Avalon a few time. Nice boat!!!
@DOO718
@DOO718 7 жыл бұрын
Hey bud! To be honest I pondered a supercharger although my engines needed some work so I decided to go new diesel. You would probably get better MPG and it would prob help performance a bit if enough torque is gained. But I am not going to lie.. those CAT C7 are unreal in that boat!! 28knt cruise loaded with people and supplies. I know the extra cost isn't fun but I was worried about salt water with a super charger. salt is murder to everything. I wanted something I didnt have to worry about. The older I get the less time I have to tinker on stuff.. Although, What If I sold you mine?! My family is getting bigger and I need more room. The last thing I want to do is sell it because Its freaking awesome but I have been considering going a little bigger... I have done a bunch more work to it since this video also. anyway Hit me up if you are interested.
@DOO718
@DOO718 7 жыл бұрын
Also, if you go pro-charger.. consider that you may have to do new shafts, wheels, struts and transmissions. They might hold up fine depending on how much torque is added but something to consider. Oh ..and also if they fit under the hood. I cant remember how much room I had with the 7.4 gas motors but the diesels are TIGHT!!

Maybe we can talk off-line? I work in Newport (55/405) and we are in the market and looking at convertibles as well, but I tend to lean more towards an express. I do like the tower, but that's optional to climb!!!! My body is falling apart after years of abuse, and climbing a flybridge consistently would be brutal. We have a broker now, and we've been seriously looking, but there really is no inventory in So. Cal.

As long as you do it knowing you will never get half of your money back if you sell it. Buyer financing will give only top list price and rarely on a boat over 10 years old. Banks and insurance companies don't care what you have in to it, receipts or not. The tax man will assess it however. You must really love the result.....and have a boatload of money. Been there, done that 1979 43' Delta Clipper with 2ea Vortec 5.7L Mpi 330 hp (2014).

Karl Jensen yes I do love my boat. It was all worth it for me. I saved a bit doing most the work myself but your right, it was expensive. But when is boating not expensive??!! LOL. I will probably do it again with a different boat soon. Family is growing and I need more staterooms.. but I can't seem to get rid of this one I love it so much!!

I honestly don't know why you would do this. The older engines would have been better for several reasons not just because of power but servicability
@callumwearne7870
@callumwearne7870 9 жыл бұрын
In answer to DOO718 you could say the same thing about anything that is turbo charged. If you had turbo charged your old motors for instance they would be a lot more powerful than the Cat engines you put in. Justifying a diesel repower just because of a turbo charger isn't smart
@highvelocity123
@highvelocity123 9 жыл бұрын
Callum Wearne You obviously don't know much about how HP is made. There are 2 sides of the equation Torque X RPM / 5252=HP. You can make power with low torque and high RPM, but these engines are like 6 cylinder outboards and are weaker under a load and will never hold up like diesel making the same HP. Diesels use the torque side of the equation to make HP. It takes massive amounts of torque at such a low rpm to make the same power as a gas engine, therefore any load you put on them is chewed up and spit out... So in this case it is smart... these diesel engines will out last those gas engines 4 to 1...
@callumwearne7870
@callumwearne7870 9 жыл бұрын
highvelocity123 Actually Verado outboards have a surprising amount of low end torque and could give your diesels a run for their money. This is just a waste of money, there was nothing wrong with the old engines. He just wants engines that are more economic but pray tell what the fuck is so economical about a turbo charge monster like the ones he has replaced the big blocks with (they alone produce more than 320nm of torque at only 3600rpm) I don't see what is so bad about that. That boat is only 33 foot. Plus I'm pretty sure the borg warner box's were better if not hurths
@highvelocity123
@highvelocity123 9 жыл бұрын
Callum Wearne You really have to look up the specs on these diesels before you pass judgement. They are crazy efficient and make crazy torque/power. At 1200 RPM engine torque is at 585lbs AND at 1800 Rpm its 1178 lbs. Max Hp is at 2100 Rpm and stays till 2800. Also, those gas motors are actually bigger displacement at 8.2 liters, the new engines are 7.2 liters. And since they are turbo engines they sip fuel at idle, and fishing boats idle a lot...Most things are done for a reason, before you poo poo something, do some leg work...
@DOO718
@DOO718 9 жыл бұрын
Callum Wearne Actually the boat is 37' x 14'.3 wide and highvelocity123 is right. The gas engines in this boat did not have enough torque. The boat was to heavy for the gas 454's. The props where half the size of the ones the diesel can turn and I picked up at least 8 knots at cruise while burning less fuel. Waist of money? Not for me! Best thing I ever did. I know because I was able to compare both power options.

DOO718 I just don't understand it I am familiar with boats, I have been on 38 foot boats that is one foot longer than yours in this video with the same type of engine as your old ones and they are capable of 30 knots. The only reason I can see your engines being echonomical is because of the turbo
