A three megawatt motor just sittin' there spinning so quickly and quietly is a hell of an intimidating thing. Incredibly useful, too, and it's pretty impressive how little vibration there is in that beast of a motor throughout the range of RPMs shown.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to design and build a motor that can run on either 3-phase star/delta or a single phase. Disclaimer: You'd need five windings
@MenzelMotors Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. The medium voltage motors are usually connected in Y connection, so every phase can be separately protected and measured. Theoretically a single phase design would be possible, but would reduce torque and power with the same rotor - and most important: we can not imagine an grid that would accept a few MW of imbalance due to single phase operation.
@coastersaga Жыл бұрын
Good information to have! I spent some time rethinking my idea, and decided upon the universal phase motor (UPM, not to be confused with a standard universal motor, which can run on both AC and DC. The UPM could run on either three-phase star/delta, single phase, or a split-phase system (like the 205-208V/ 240VAC outlets in residential areas with 100-120VAC mains. The motor could be designed as either an induction motor or a synchronous motor, however in both types of motor, the geometry of the rotor would need to be such that when the motor is operating on any three-, split-, or single-phase system, the magnetic fields are restricted to the rotor. This would provide higher torque in some operating modes, but mainly the purpose of restricting the magnetic fields to the rotor is to prevent back EMF from being present in unwanted spots (mainly the other windings.)

@MenzelMotors3 жыл бұрын

@MenzelMotors3 жыл бұрын

Yes, a squirrel cage motor that is direct on line started, starts very fast in many cases, you are right. In the test field we start over the frequency, accelerating very slow, so we can better hear, measure and identify potential problems.

I believe that we are moving from an age of thermal energy prime movers into an age of electrical prime movers. For a number of physical reasons. We have the technology and ability to harvest solar energy on a large scale and directly convert it into electrical energy at high efficiency. Enough energy to support 10 times the population of the earth. In a desert, one square meter receives 1kw of energy for at least 5 hours a day.

And i used yo think, my 75 KW motor is really difficult to handle 😂😂😂 Can someone talk about the starting circuit, my ability band ends at 100 KW
@MenzelMotors3 ай бұрын
Handling a 75 kW motor can definitely feel challenging, especially when you start dealing with larger systems! The starting circuit for such motors often includes components like: Star-Delta Starters: Reduces the starting current by connecting the motor in a star configuration initially and then switching to delta for normal operation. Soft Starters: Gradually increase the voltage to the motor, minimizing inrush current and mechanical stress. Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Allow for control over the motor's speed and torque while also managing starting currents. Resistive Starting: Uses external resistors to limit the starting current. If you’re looking for specific advice or configurations, feel free to share more details!
