90 minutes of Class 37 indulgence with the full run from London Liverpool Street to Norwich! Each Express 3 was a day to remember in East Anglia with 90mph running of these veteran old diesels!!!
Enjoy the day if you didn't make it with GPS and on screen speed data.

Comments like that David make the effort worthwhile… If you haven’t yet subscribed to HellfireTV channel where there are many more films there, filmed in a similar style for your enjoyment. Thank you for the compliment.

Great Ride....especially with all the detail...great to actually track it ALL the way....without bits missing for once...& I must say ye olde 37 did really well...clocking 85 -90 mph..heading east through the Essex countryside...although most likely on Downhill track possibly....Although I didn't realise that it had one on either end,

34/4s were regeared on conversion to match their intended use, hence their rapid acceleration at low speed and good hill climbing. Top speed is 80mph so although one would have the power on the flat for 90mph with this load the electrical gearing (their electrical unloading point is around 72mph I think) means that they can't use it so 83-85 is your lot.

Thanks for the upload Hellfire TV. As an ex railman who worked this line I was astonished at the speeds especially up Brentwood bank. Then I remembered we only used one loco . You can certainly shift with 3500 HP under your throtle. We never used double engine configarations in my day in that area at all even on heavy freight runs . We crawled around at 40 to 50 mph sometimes

I remember heading home on a train like that in 1982, ie before the line was electrified. Those trains really rattled along at quite a lick, especially on the section between Haughley Junction and Norwich. Standing room only, alas.

I normally switch off this type of video within 5 minutes simply because I can’t stand the wind roar, however you seem to have suppressed the noise to a tolerable level and so I enjoyed the video especially as I was a secondman on the locomotives in the late 1960s and travelled this route frequently. We mainly used Brush type4 2750hp locos and took 2hrs stopping only at Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich on our faster schedules. Of course the line speeds in those days were much lower and the Locomotive Engineers did well to keep to the timetable.

Robin Mayes was the driver and the time was unofficially according to him 102 minutes. Would have been faster if not caught on 2 yellows at Stratford behind a stopper. Did all 3 tours and loved all 3. I liked 3 because it gave me West Anglia to LST and my mate Stevie G was driving.

I asked if I could create this film further forward in the brake/ guards position. Permission denied I think because the guard or tour organisers used it to enjoy the engine closer and I don’t blame them! Great info you added here. Thank you

How does the rear loco know when the front loco want to slow down or speed up? Is there a driver in the both of them?
@hellfiretvmh
@hellfiretvmh 2 жыл бұрын
Ignore my previous reply I don’t know I was thinking! There was a loco on the rear, I think there cables beneath the coaches controlling the rear loco from the front so that it repeats the actions of the front engine

With one 37 up the front and one up the ( bum ) this lot has 3500 hp on tap... Not bad but when i drove the class 43's up the ECML I had 4500 hp to play with... Pulling out of Kings X on notch 5 with plenty of exhaust fumes and the screaming Paxman Valenta Turbo's was something to behold especially when even more excitement was to come... Ps Sorry Greta Thunberg...
