Only 38:10 in and I can honestly say this is THE BEST upload I've seen yet of a train drivers cab view of his jounrney. The view pulling out of Waterloo looks fantastic. One's heart must be racing though with so many tracks in front you, doubled up with being surrounded by so many trains coming towards you, at a stationary position, or at the sides. So much trust has to go into the signals. Absolute top upload 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

@ The video is great however I was transfixed on the streaks on the window. I really did enjoy the video and while watching it had a wonderful idea while watching the signals and rail route pathways. A total computer nationally controlled system where a driver typing in the destination and hit's the throttle and off we go and we should be non stop with sometimes inches apart from trains crossing each others destination path?

Platforms 7-16 cover the Portsmouth, Weymouth and Exeter services and 17 to 24 are Reading services. Not to mention, access to London Underground for Bakerloo, Northern, Jubilee and Waterloo & city lines. It also used to house the Eurostar (Channel Tunnel), before the High speed line was built to St Pancras.

Sure calm his hyperbole but no need to indulge in it yourself. He may have said Londons commuter network or meant some sort of collective value and been fairly accurate. India and America?! Lol You can't just list a load of countries, some that may have busier stations and some may have faster trains and some better time-keeping (not sure what your "efficiency means here" do you? Surely if it means passenger journeys per population then there are not many places with more efficiency, see below). People hanging off the outside of trains in India to Japan investing in train tech because they couldnt compete with the jet age while most stations in other European capitals were built centrally to serve pan-European traffic from their inception. I guess you didnt know that the UK operates one of the highest number of High Speed services in the world even before building any dedicated high speed track? I am amazed that Stratford in East London is the 46th busiest station in Europe! That will only go up when Crossrail fully opens at the end of 2019. Then there is Old Oak Common in West London that will be an interchange between HS2 and Crossrail that will be on par with Waterloo which is currently the UKs busiest station and 15th in Europe. Can't imagine many other cities with a similar situation. From Wikipedia The UK has the 17th largest railway network in the world; despite many lines having closed in the 20th century it remains one of the densest rail networks. It is one of the busiest railways in Europe, with 20% more train services than France, 60% more than Italy, and more than Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Portugal and Norway combined, as well as representing more than 20% of all passenger journeys in Europe.[3] In 2016, there were 1.718 billion journeys on the National Rail network,[1] making the British network the fifth most used in the world (Great Britain ranks 23rd in world population). Unlike a number of other countries, rail travel in the United Kingdom has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, with passenger numbers reaching their highest ever level

Like right at the end - goes through yellow signals and is stopped at red signal before tunnel mouth and a train goes past - was clear for that train but not him, as the other train comes out of the tunnel (end of it) his signal turns yellow and he proceeds with caution in to the tunnel and comes out, across points and into the station - end of video. 🤗

Thank you for this, sir. Back in the mid-80s I had a lengthy freelance contract at TVS in Southampton and this vid' brought back a few memories of that early Monday morning journey. I see the dreaded Northam level crossing is still there - four tracks wide with both docks and passenger traffic, it was so busy to gates (in those days) stayed shut for up to 20-minutes to let several trains go though. Not a bundle of fun when sitting in the back of a taxi, off to the hotel! Not far from there are / were the TVS Studios, on the banks of the mighty River Itchen, which had the uniqueness of having a rail line run through the car park. BR ran a train through once a year and there was a mad dash of staff to get the cars out. One year the annual train derailed and every one was covered in confusion. Man oh man, I could bore for England on this topic, so I'll stop-. I shall now sub.

Interesting to hear the conversation between the driver and signaller, and the way the driver repeated the signaller's instructions "you are authorising me, [headcode] to pass this signal [signal number] at danger - but obey all other signals". No room for doubt! I bet many other train operating companies would have required the soundtrack to be muted at that point because they seem to be paranoid about any driver-signaller conversations being heard by The Public.

Please can somebody explain the huge rectangular concrete slab / bridge over the lines at 4:16? On Google Earth, I can see that it's 107 metres long by 27 metres wide. A pair of lines crosses over the main line there, but why the need for the huge slab in addition to the curved viaduct?
@johnfromengland262027 күн бұрын
This structure was built some 30 years ago to carry trains from Waterloo Station across the main South-Western tracks to connect with tracks leading from Victoria Station down to the Channel Tunnel, during the years before the new high-speed line into St Pancras Station was constructed. As you can see from Google Earth, if a "narrow" bridge had been built to carry these tracks, it would have needed a span of about 120 metres, which would have been very expensive and would have caused unacceptable disruption to trains while it was being installed. The structure you see is simpler and cheaper, and because the slab could be installed in many similar short sections, each one positioned overnight, its installation caused overall less disruption to traffic. The tracks and the structure now appear to be disused, although presumably they could be used again if and when needed.

First time I have ever seen anything like that happen. The promptness with which the driver phoned rather than waiting for a few minutes to see if it cleared suggests that he had already been briefed about the failure and had been told to follow this procedure.

Thank-you for the memories. I was in Southampton in the summer of 2001, and rode that very line half a dozen times in the span of a month. I also remember the dual tunnels there, but never knew the name. I remember that on some of the rides the engineer would toot the horn at those tunnels. low high entering, and then high low as they approached the end. Was it for rail workers? Seems that there wasn't enough time, but I just heard the horn here and then a short time later, there were workers on the tracks.

That day I have been in these ares first time ever! Really nice places to visit. I'm sure you had been travelling by trains a lot! Yeah that was for the rail workers :) Kind Regards

The three lines on the video are on the camera lens, not on the train.Look at the video Southampton to Weymouth.

34 active trains in first 11 minutes amazing

That's because most of those trains came through Clapham Junction, which I believe, is still the busiest station/junction in the world.

@@theaccountant1295 Waterloo is busiest in terms of passenger numbers but I believe that Clapham Junction is busiest in terms of most trains (it includes half the trains from Victoria too). Of course some trains don't stop there.

I see the signaller gave permission for a danger signal to be passed, due to a track circuit failure. Hopefully Network Rail was notified of the failure and sent out a crew to fix it.
@DieyoungDiefast6 жыл бұрын
That was probably the rep[air crew the other side of the tunnel by the junction box with the door open.
@lescalverley83354 жыл бұрын
Off course Network Rail new about it. It was one of their signallers that gave the authority to pass the signal at danger.
@Spookieham4 жыл бұрын
You can see the crew otherwise of the tunnel at the lineside cabinet.
@dukenukem57682 жыл бұрын
A crew was fixing it - the "Orange Army" guys @52:45 . Network rail did not need to be notified by then - they operate the signalling and it was them he was getting directions from them on the phone.

I remember crawling out through Vauxhall to Clapham Junction back in 1979. I take it BR/Railtrack/NR upgraded the substations?
