Making use of the good weather I am setting about installing the hot water heater on the boat. This is how I put the collar and wedge in place

Hi James. Don't be surprised if the BSS inspector makes you remove some of that plywood ceiling around the flue, and replace it with something a little less flammable.. You'll probably need a permanent fresh air vent, too, as that's an open flue water heater. Otherwise, crack on! All the best, mate. P.S. Please put me down for a winning ticket. 😉😉
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Жыл бұрын
The giveaway doesn’t work quite like that!! The BSS should be fine as it is as it’s an old boat - this would fail on a new boat though. There’s enough vents from my calcs. I’ll trim the ply back further just in case though mate as it’s all covered anyway - good call

Nice to see you have the right technique with the tap James..... I've seen so many narrowboaters do this and always forget to turn it back every few turns to get rid of the swarf.... I find myself waiting for the tap to snap!.....

Really neat job with the wooden wedge, that makes it so much neater than just bolting the collar straight to the roof. I’d be tempted to add some washers and a blob of sealer under the bolt heads just to make sure no water finds its way in down the bolt threads

@markhedges3067 Жыл бұрын
Hi mate - great job and looking good 👍. Others have raised some interesting points, so the only thing I would say is just to check if the bolts you’ve used are stainless steel? If they are, you’ll get electrolytic corrosion (occurs when 2 dissimilar metals are in contact) between the bolt head and the aluminium collar. Good news is that’s easily fixed by putting rubber isolation washers under the head of the bolts which will prevent them from fusing to the collar, which will make it easier the next time you have to remove them. Cheers
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Жыл бұрын
I’ve used mild steel bolts and mild steel washers - cheers for the tip
@markhedges3067

@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Hey James - I think the issue will still exist whether they are mild or stainless steel. Unlikely to be a serious issue but could make the removal of the collar easier in future. All the best mate 👍

I'm surprised you didn't trim the wood wedge to accommodate for the old patch? Will you need to add fire/heat resistant insulation in the gap around the flue?
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Жыл бұрын
I might add some fire proof foam in that gap yeah. I didn’t make the wedge bigger to cover whole area as it would have had to be too big and would look a bit weird - also it would have meant a larger piece of oak which is tricky

In the timelapse, you can see the boat lowering and raising slightly... is this because of someone using locks? Does it affect the water level that much?
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Жыл бұрын
Superb observation. This is a small pound so yes opening locks does affect the depth of the cut. Interestingly though this pound is the first time I’ve noticed it. Yesterday we were 6inches from breaching the bank. CRT came out in the middle of the night. It won’t flood though as it overflows the locks and makes it’s way down.
@terryhoyle7043
@terryhoyle7043 Жыл бұрын
Did you treat the bare metal left from your cut? Rust is a constant problem on steel boats. You might have done this off camera but maybe it just got forgotten? You are usually so meticulous about even the smallest job, I envy you your DiY skills, and patience. Oh, and whilst on the subject, did you paint the underside of your wooden wedge?
