Winging It! Boating On A Budget

3 жыл бұрын

Full installation of a Morso Squirrel log burner in less than 18 minutes! Well the video is less than 18 minutes, the install took a little longer! We position the hearth, locate the log burner - and fasten it in place, cut a hole in the boat roof and install the roof collar. It's then in with the flue, fire cement all round... and light the fire! No messing around, the temperature was barely above freezing - we NEEDED to get warm!
Along the way we include a few hints and tips as to how to install, and light the log burner.
If you haven't seen our previous videos, or heard about us, here's a brief background on or Boating On A Budget project...
In August 2019 we bought narrowboat - a 1980s Springer that's 36ft long and had previously been sunk twice prior to us purchasing it! It's engine was rather poorly so we took it out and fitted a DIY self build Electric Drive system - which we recorded and made vlogs about (available to view on KZbin).
Move forward a year from buying that boat and we were loving life on the water so much we wanted a bigger boat so we could move aboard full time.
So we bought 'Lyanda Lady' a 50ft boat that needed a LOT of work. This series is following us stripping the boat right back to a basic shell. As the top half of the boat is fibreglass that's cracked and broken we need to remove that, and then build a WHOLE new roof structure. It will then be time to completely re build the boat before moving aboard.
Just to add to the fun I'm a Tight Yorkshireman, and we are working with a small budget - hence Boating On A Budget!
Come along and join us on what promises to be a epic adventure!

Word of warning to anyone fitting a new squirrel or swift. .Remove the smoke hood inside the fire (looks a bit like a half cup) its situated above the baffle. These are not to be fitted on a narrowboat which has such a small flue length. Have been to two boats where the soot blocks the chimney. Once removed the fire draws better..and you won't die. Read your squirrel instructions.

Well done guys - the new stove is bound to make your working lives so much more comfortable this winter. One tip I would pass on seeing you spreading that fire cement. Invest a few bob in a plasterer's small tool - it's got much smaller & very flexible blades & would have made that job a lot easier.

Weve just bought a Morso Squirrel stove 1412. What size roof collar did you use? It's hard to get a straight answer from anyone- online or in chandlerys.
@Paul-pb3vq
@Paul-pb3vq 3 жыл бұрын
Don't forget to seal the top collar fire rope on its own will not seal and keep the water out. I found to my cost few weeks after fitting mine. I heard dripping water. I've used a rubberised high temperature silicone sealant. It's now been done four years and hasn't leaked yet.

@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget Check it as I first used a fire cement after fire rope the heat made the cement porous and broke down resulting in another leak that's why i finally used a rubberised heat sealent. That is still good as the day I did it. Love your videos. You certainly have taken on a project. Can't wait to see the finished result. I'm sure it will be worth all that hard work. Stay safe guys.

Hi mate I have found a 43 ft boat in a yard in West Yorkshire ( dont want to say where on here) could I ask you some questions, its been out of the water a few years. Its on hard standing so a survey would be easier than having it lifted. My worry is I don't have an endless pot of money can you advise me how I could just walk round it and what to look for. Obviously the marina are selling it without any liability. If I could end up with what you had before you ripped if out I would be happy. They are saying it got a lister engine and the boat is 1970s. Any help I would be really grateful for. Its the same price you paid for yours. If I could private message you please let me know. Cheers Andy

Heat is vital at this time of year, really didnt want to be freezing all the time working on it. Left a bit of a gap, and during these first burns ive been checking the roof and its not getting hot... but the fire proof insulation sounds like a wise move!
