Great video man. I’ve never ported a set of heads, but I have been researching this subject for about a year. This helped put everything together in a way that makes sense to me. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words. Good luck. I wish someone explained the importance of the bowl to me when I started. And how erring on the small side is way better than being too big

Thanks good sir. I try and keep them straight to the point. I hate people that ramble on for 30 minutes to get a 3 minute point across

Wow! That just filled in a lot of gaps for me! This is all the stuff I've been learningand absorbing, but I still couldn't quite get it arranged right in my head. Great breakdown! I've been working on one poor 906 for a while, testing, and experimenting. I've been stuck in the low 260's@.600 this whole week, and banging my head against the wall trying to plan what to do on the next head. This pair is sacrificial, but I have another milled set of 906's to do and go on this 440 I'm building, as soon as I could get my ports closer to 300 cfm, and the airspeeds figured out. I also have more 906s,516s, 452s, aluminum Sidewinders ,plus small block closed chambered 920s, 915Js with both 3/8 and 11/32 valves, and a pair of Edelbrock 60779s that need some epoxy and a rework. Point being, I'm ready to get past this learning curve, and have some fun with this stuff. I also have a little SF-110, and an old B&D valve grinder, and looking towards getting some better valve seat gear. You can find me pretty easy by my KZbin handle which is also my page name. I'd love to talk about porting sometime! Thanks!! Ty

@@black_sheep_fab9411 Same here. I've been hacking away at this 906 SSR for a week or more. I'm stuck! Granted, this head has the factory valve and valve job, with just a 30° back cut, and a sloppy factory chamber, but I have a hard time believing that's where the other 40 cfm I'm looking for is hiding! I think most of it is under that lump! I've heard people say you can lay it waaay back, and take a bunch off, but a visual would really help for the shape. When I get it, I'm definitely making a mold.

You do not need a flow bench to get a good port. You do need a flow bench to get a maximized port. I've been doing some work on some open 318 smog open chamber heads. First get rid of head bolt boss. The valve guide boss. Then I made the port bias to the cylinder side. And then pushrod pinch. The key is to use the bowl to slow down the air to come around the backside of the valve. That is why widening and laying back the short turn helps so much. The throat helps to keep the low flow numbers because of the venturi effect between the valve and bowl. Depending on how wide you valve job is also can depend on what % throat you have for a proper venturi. For some stock heads that is 85% with stock valve job. I did not want to go any farther on my 318 heads. It's a truck motor.

Touching the short side without a bench is just shooting in the dark. YOu have NO Idea if you've helped or hurt.

Thanks for your time putting these videos out for people like me, it is much appreciated, esp because you use dodge heads. Every video helps me understand the goal clearer. I am done with my 318 heads but haven't ran them yet, waiting for winter to end. The next set I want to try working will be my 3 cyl john deere head and then a set of 906 heads for my 440. I did watch till the end, a good last tip. Thanks! ( I am not yet much with the math.)

I port matched. My performer 360 to my 318 heads. I did not bring thr heads out to 318 gasket size. Because I could not. So when I went into the intake only opened the size to what I did on the heads. And then I went all the way up the intake runner into the plenum. Gasket matching the 1st inch or 2 is not very useful. And opening them up does not decrease torque. Your power band is determined by runner length.
