Yeah, I have a video I will post soon on the confusion of penetration steps/set ups…people shoot from way too far away. Then his hands get in the way and get your back out if alignment. I don’t shoot from any further than 2/3rd arms length distance. So that means I’m inside making head to head contact. But even if you were getting stuffed and circle to the far side, it takes the guillotine away. I’ve literally had people try to explain to me what a front headlock is, LOL!! As if a wrestler doesn’t know what a front headlock is, LOL

It’s the same kind of pressure you would do if someone tried to pull your head down. I was really exaggerating it, so people could understand that it’s the back of my head on their lat that does it. Watch…some dick will tell me it doesn’t work, because their forehead is in their ribs, LOL!! And yes, you are 100% right. And in wrestling that prevents his front headlock and from getting me out of position, because now my back is straight enough to squat hundreds of pounds. If I push him forward with the back of my head, then his back is rounded and there’s no choke. I think this is why the guillotine works so well from guard, because the floor is making your back flat and he has no way of lifting his head from there to affect your spine. You’re pushing back into the floor and it just makes it worse for him…he is stuck, unless he can get to side control

I am not much of a halfguard person TBH. But when I do get there, I basically get to a wrestling position and sweep. The guy I mentioned in the video isn’t a wrestler but very good at noGi Jiu Jitsu. He definitely made my life difficult with the D’arce. If I could cut the corner, like I showed in Video #2 (and I will show it again with other details-just need to edit that), then his D’arce didn’t work. What’s happening to you from there? Wrestlers are very familiar with the top position from half guard, because for us, that’s what’s called a “turk.” If they try to come up to a waist grab we are very familiar with that “dogfight” position. Since I basically know nothing about wrestling for jiu jitsu when going for double legs I would pretty much always go straight into the guy and either get choked or end up in guard, but it makes total sense to go across the body towards the far leg since even if they try to hold onto a guillotine they can't finish it and it's Von Flue city... lol. Very helpful video.

Lifting someone off the ground take a lot of their defense away-that’s for sure. It’s all about whose spine is rounded off. If yours is on the shot, you might get choked. But if his is, because you’re pushing him over your own back, then his power on your throat is weak. There’s always going to be that gumby, but most people don’t have the strength/leverage to do anything in that position to make the choke serious. The real fight is knowing whether you should lift or not…but when in doubt, get your head up, and your butt under you, which will straighten your back for the lift. You can lift with the double or with the head on the outside single-DC style. I used the latter when guys really tried to crossface the crap out of me. But nobody in Jiu Jitsu is using the crossface off the shot. It’s strange. I don’t know why. So learn a good crossface and punish people for even thinking they can take you down. It changes the entire mindset of the match

Hi, Joseph! Thanks for your awsome videos! They're really eye-opening for me as a judo black belt and bjj purple beltch. What do you think about the version of double leg where, from an over-under pummeling type situation, you trap your opponent's underhook arm to his hip with your head as you level change for the shot. I got the idea first from an old Randy Couture vhs tape ("Clinch Takedowns" 14:10 timestamp on youtube). But the over-under setup I'm inerested in is in Kolat's "Trap arm chest to chest throw". Is this double leg variant just a scrub move which a good wrestler could defend by simply pulling you up using his "trapped" arm? It sounds too good to be true - to completely bypass the front headlock/guillotine danger.. I would love to hear your verdict on the matter. Have a great day!
@josephbreza-grappling94592 жыл бұрын
I love Kolat, but I think a lot of what he shows works for him only…he’s a genetic freak. Look at his rubber knee! I’m definitely not training any of my guys to do that. Generally speaking, I am a pretty conservative wrestler. I don’t like forcing positions and fighting through what they have. So, I’m more likely going to get his underhook out rather than try to use his underhook against him. I want clean entry to the legs. Any friction he has is potentially an obstacle for me Thank you for your support.

For the single leg, I usually switch to grabbing the back of the ankle with the inside arm, then bring my head to the inside and push my shoulder and head into the inside of knee, and bulldoze out, and this has been very effective for me… if you just run the pipe with the head on the outside you’re going to get guillotined right? So with head on the outside, I should look up and lift like you showed, or switch to the ankle thing that I like to do I guess…I’ve been getting to this single leg position from attempted firemen’s carries a lot…. Thanks for the info man!

The first thing you are describing sounds like a classic low single. I haven’t shown that on my page. If you run the pipe with the head on the outside then you are ok if you don’t go down with him when he has the head trapped. If he traps my head then I drive to the double or else I am in deep shit when we get to the mat. Most people run the pipe like shit when their head is on the outside. They pull their shoulder and head out of position and that can give him your back. What I am showing here is effective

Yo joey boy, I love your content. I've been training at an actual wrestling club for like 2 months now, and your videos (specifically your content on head on the inside finishes) have helped me a ton with catching up to the highschool wrestlers and consistently scoring takedowns on them. With that being said, I've only been working head on the inside singles, I've been avoiding learning head on the outside singles because I've been told that apparently they're worse compared to head on the inside singles for smaller guys against bigger wrestlers. From your experience, would you say that's true? Like, would you say in comparison to a head on the inside single, a high crotch is worse against a bigger guy or equally as effective.

Thank you! I am glad you found a place to wrestle. I think they are equally effective, because you are supposed to cut angles on people anyways. Great points and I would generally agree but add to that not to underestimate a good guillotine. There's not too many people out there with a really solid guillotine game, so it's easy to underestimate the danger. J'den Cox made a video with Gordon Ryan after they trained for a few days, where he mentions avoiding head outside attacks after being caught in Gordon's guillotines a lot. Now, obviously Gordon has really great guillotines, but J'den also has insane wrestling and I'm pretty sure he knows how to shoot and keep his back/neck straight. Again, I'm not disagreeing with you, just wanted to point that out. Similar to how you mention your old training partner, who had great darces. If you hadn't spent time with him, you'd like underestimate darces just as much as guillotines.
@josephbreza-grappling94592 жыл бұрын
Yeah no doubt. It’s why I spent over 13 mins showing what to do with your head in the outside to prevent the guillotine. It’s pretty normal for wrestlers to get guillotined when they first start, because they aren’t used to a guy conceding a takedown to his but with a front headlock. Gordon Ryan certainly would be someone you should take caution with!! Good thing about that dude is he lets go immediately when you tap and is a very clean submission artist

Hey Joseph, do you need anything different if your partner hooks/frames your trail leg with their foot, kind of like how people take their leg outside of your knees when you hold onto a mid-level single or hook in the leg when they are amount to slammed in a rear bodylock. I find it when they hook it makes them much harder to lift, and they can stay balanced longer. Hope this makes sense, this is probably a jiujitsu/untrained thing as I can't find content of people even doing it lol
@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
I think I can picture what you are saying. Sounds like they have accepted the takedown and are pulling guard. You might also have to accept that your takedown is going to end up that way. It also sounds like you are driving straight back, which is not a good idea for wrestling or Jiu Jitsu, as you will get guillotined and not pass the guard in Jiu Jitsu; whereas in wrestling, you will get thrown over the way I show. So, driving across the far leg will prevent a lot of that, as your trail leg is creating angle to the side. I find that new wrestlers/BJJ people spend far too much time after they get on the legs. You want a fluid movement

@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
There isn’t a perfect formula for everything. It definitely prevents the choke. It keeps your spine straight. It prevents the front headlock in wrestling, because of posture. Of course the defense is to circle and sprawl to elongate his spine and get his head out of position. I’m shorter than everyone and never had a problem reaching the leg unless he is being super defensive. Then I go to the crackdown, which I have covered. Keep an open mind and drill these things.
@G102Y5568 Жыл бұрын
Second question, so the conventional knowledge taught in BJJ to keep your head on the inside during a single leg isn’t necessary so long as you posture correctly?
@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
The head on the inside doesn’t keep you safe from the Darce unless you are all the way in, but as soon as he breaks your grip from the sprawl, you are at risk of the darce, which I find to be worse than the guillotine. Most people have bad posture-their head is down so their spine is no longer upright, which makes them susceptible to the guillotine. Daniel Cormier and Khabib, both exceptional wrestlers, shot with their head on the outside all the time. But they have good spine posture and keep moving. In wrestling, we are taught to get his spine out of alignment and you do that by trying to control his head. But he knows that, so he is going to try to keep his spine upright by keeping his head up. So that’s the game. Try getting the guillotine on someone if their head is that far back on you and their head, hips, and back are straight. You’re more likely to get into a good position like that in Jiu Jitsu than you are with wrestling, because people stand up and don’t have good shot defense YET. They will though, that day will come. But the concepts will remain the same. Bad posture with head down and a rounded back is front headlock or choke city for him
@G102Y5568 Жыл бұрын
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 So it's actually just as dangerous to keep head on the inside as it is on the outside. The important detail in either case is to straighten yourself after shooting and the conventional knowledge to keep head on the inside isn't applicable. I'll try that! Thanks!
@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on who you are up against. If they don’t have good defense and sprawl like crap then it doesn’t matter. I rolled with a guy who had one hell of a darce and I would have to beat the corner on that single leg or pay the price. The days of taking a shitty shot and praying for success are coming to an end. The defense is still not at a good high school level, but it will be in a few years I hope. I just don’t subscribe to the notion of “you can’t have your head on the outside” because wrestlers in the UFC do it all the time against Jiu Jitsu blackbelts. My experience is the same too. I can take down blackbelts and it’s not what they do off the takedown as much as it is when I now enter their world. The dogmatic views need to stop because they close off opportunities for growth. There are still tons of people who say wrestling doesn’t work in BJJ, but there are moves they are using that are wrestling moves-they just don’t know it. Wrestling is the oldest sport in the world. There are cave paintings that are 30,000 years old with details of wrestling moves that we still use today. Greeks had a form of MMA called Pankration that likely (from what I have read) used submissions we use today. So nothing is really new. I talk about this in a number of videos, but I am pretty sure I make a point to say it for sure in #10. If you circle to the front, like I do on #10 with running the pipe, he can’t scissor sweep or elevate you over. The later requires that he is pushing a lot, while the former is when you just stand there like a dickhead. Always circle to the front like I describe in #10. Sometimes ashi like firas is doing here, other times with elevation and a reverse x to cross ashi situation. Perhaps we’re hanging out too long in the mid zone and have to go quicker w the shoulder pressure?
@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
You are pushing, not pulling. He can’t so that if you are circling to the front, which puts his weight on his heel-the same direction that you are running the pipe. He is going the opposite direction by arm dragging and sitting through. In every case, the guy got a single and stood there like a dickhead with his head out of position (too high) and not circling to the front. Do that and you’ll take away his ability to balance there and come to that drag. His weight will be going too far backwards. Now if that is a signature move and he’s doing it immediately, then you will have to act fast. But the key is to stop pushing and pull. Then his entry won’t be as deep. You might also find the Barzegar to be useful. You can run the pipe, clear the leg to the outside and run him over. If you can’t clear the leg, do that oldschool pull and then to the low double like I show on 10 (I think it’s 10). Also, if your elbows are tucked in, then he can’t get to a drag. If you go to the high level single then all of his offense there is gone

I hate it, lol! You’ll never get there against anyone who has a stance and knows the first thing about defense. If you get it, then it’s hard to deal with, but good luck getting there. People in BJJ stand upright like shlongs, but once they adopt a legitimate stance, I don’t see it happening. I have seen Nicky Ryan get that on Dante-he caught Dante standing there. It’s not what I teach though, because if you don’t get your hands locked, you’re screwed. Your position then is terrible. Let’s put it this way; if it was a good choice then why didn’t we all learn how to do it in high school, collegiate, or freestyle wrestling? Why don’t you see it as a common way to take someone down at high levels? Why didn’t we see it happen at ADCC? He has both posts (legs) on the ground and you aren’t chopping any of them out when you’re up around his upper thighs. He is free to widen his posts without you stopping it. That’s why we are all trained to block the legs at the knee caps and run over one of them. It’s taking a post away. The other major issue is that if he isn’t super tight on the way in, and you pull him up to the bodylock, it’s uchi mata or Hari Goshi city. A common defense taught (actually the purpose of the whizzer) is to pull them up. This is wrestling 101. I don’t want my guys putting themselves in trouble from the beginning. So, I stick with what has worked for 5,000 years

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 interesting. Do you feel it is a better option in mma as the stances are much more upright? Gsp had alot of success with it
@josephbreza-grappling94592 жыл бұрын
@@GT-td9ni you better be damn close when you do it. He was good at faking a punch then shooting. It gets people to put their hands up. You don’t have that advantage (or the cage on their back) in BJJ. Maybe you will have a cage sometime but that’s definitely a different skill set. I saw him do MANY classic double legs. I haven’t seen him do that upright posture with the lock behind the butt. I think you have a better chance of getting that when he is standing upright, but it’s not superior to a classic double leg. Danaher is way too upright and that’s easy to whip over to the back. In fact, that is something we drilled in college. When someone was too upright, we would step across behind his knee and whip him to his back and end up in full mount.

Any thoughts on how Bo Nickal avoids the guillotine on his doubles (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5ezaJV6ba-bp6csi=9iktbooYWA2SIk6H&t=692), where he keeps his head rather low and sort of rotates them fast to pull them to the ground? I've been playing with both ways (head low-ish vs more traditional) and if I can barely lock my hands (I'm 155 and most guys I roll with are 190+, small gym...), then I like his and I instantly lock up a Khabib style leg tie/mount or get to side control with a super good success rate. But a lot of the time their legs are too wide for me to lock hands, I also feel like their base is too good so I can't just rotate them down to the ground if my hands aren't locked, and then I do it more similar to the ways in the video. I really wish I had longer arms though, being able to lock the arms is such an advantage.

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 No but a lot of the replies to your original video were saying that shooting on the legs doesn't work in bjj because of chokes. Again proving that wrestlers are better at wrestling than bjj guys. Shocker
@josephbreza-grappling94592 жыл бұрын
Lol! Yeah, I hear that a lot that you can’t shoot in BJJ because you will get from headlocked…as if wrestling doesn’t use front headlocks, lol!! I have put people to sleep from front headlocks and have also been put to sleep from there in wrestling. I’m hoping that in time people will see that wrestling and Jiu Jitsu have more similarities than differences. Time and exposure should help to fix that. I was coaching a high school team a few years ago and taught a heavyweight football player how to apply pressure from the front headlock. He would tap anyone in our BJJ academy with his front headlock and it’s 100% legal in wrestling (arm just has to be in there).
