Absolutely love solid roller cams. If you're going to build a race engine, just can't understand why anyone would go with a hydraulic for the strip? What fuel are you using with the 12.5:1?
@NRJracing2 ай бұрын
solid roller is the way of life for sure lol ,but it is a gamble, they wear out over time, no matter what you do or who builds it, when everything is spot on they still work the lifters out over time and eventually will kill the lifter completely and take the camshaft with it, possibly causing further damage, you can go in and put a new set of lifters or swap individual pairs as preventative maintenance but that's the gamble, will you wait too long and kill it, or catch it soon enough to just put some lifters in? never know, this is moreso the case or more abundant in the big block world big block Chev already has very poor valvetrain geometry and stability, the pushrods come into the lifters at awkward angles and are different lengths and weights, hard on lifters especially with big spring pressure, big lift, big duration, big rpm, all of it, the bigger you go the harder on the lifter it becomes. lots of guys racing with hydraulic cams you can get some pretty aggressive grinds off the shelf or have your own ground with as much duration as you want/need or at least think you need lol, ive even heard hydraulic cams so radical i swore they were solid but was wrong, ive also seen hydraulic cams make power well past 7,000rpm and continue climbing into 8k HYDRAULIC. Obviously hydraulic is not so hard on parts because of the lifter itself as well as the lower spring pressures typically needed, but at the same time its hard to deal with hydraulic lifters these days as so many are having issues collapsing even the expensive shit is junk, collapsing after first 30 mins run time. Not sure if it's still an issue but for the last couple years shitty lifters was basically a pandemic lol. haven't ran anything hydraulic in a while so not sure if it's still the case

this was still running on gasoline at this compression but it was 110 octane mixed with 93. it was roughly 1:2 ratio so equal parts 110 pump race fuel mixed with 93 premium pump gas. This allowed me to advance the timing quite a bit without detonation issues, I think it was right at 42 degrees. at 13:1 or less with aluminum heads it can run on straight 93 pump but you have to take quite a bit of timing out of it, depending on the combo potentially won't be able to get it running optimally without more timing so you need more octane in order to tune it correctly.

Im building an old 460 aka 385 lima engine for 800 hp at the crank. These small blocks they show putting out 600 to 800 hp are nice. But here is the deal. I want a streetable car i can put some miles on before i have to rebuild my engine. Now way is a 383 roller at close to 700 hp is going to last as long as that big block. Im a working blue collar guy. If you have a ton of money build your small block ,they are terrific. If your like me ,well you just cant beat cubic inches. Im looking at mid nine thru the quarter and im street legal. Not bad and BTW ,im using parts that were factory in the day except the headers and fuel injection and intake. My crank ,rods and pistons are new but you could have bought them in 1969. Im using 429 stroke and lower end bored out .40 over. Edelbrock headers intake and injection. I am thinking of a two hundred horsepower nitro kit for fun.

@NRJracing2 ай бұрын
@@QuinnBoone sounds like a good number to me 500 is fairly attainable as long as you are using enough cam, lot of people end up upset they built a 450hp 383 and don't know why then you look at the cam card and its .480 lift and has .224@050 duration always remember that when you are looking at camshafts you will see "advertised duration" and "duration@.050" advertised duration tells you nothing whatsoever you want to look at duration @ 050 and if you want it to sound good and want to make the power that your shortblock is capable of but also don't want to go to crazy as the more @.050 the more lope at idle and the more duration the higher up in rpm curve you will make your peak hp number obviously the higher rpm is harder on your valvetrain so you have to build accordingly anyways good luck with your motor sorry to ramble lol

I have a sgi block gm goodwrench 350 MD i purchased out of a wrecked c60 big truck wirh 2800 original miles. Ive wondered what the "MD" or sgi block has to offer but haven't tore into it yet. 4 bolt? Nitrite crank?
@NRJracing2 жыл бұрын
Just a whole lot of blah blah about 300hp my friend good block to work with otherwise it’s a just a 350. 4 bolt & nitrite crank regardless not benefiting you performance wise and honestly not any more reliable than a 2 bolt with a standard 442 cast crank. However you can build a relatively nice motor if you go to a good set of aluminum heads and a hot camshaft I have built many 350’s stock shortblock with a good top end and a good camshaft, however you still are only looking at around 400hp +/- at best people like to spit out completely fictional numbers on their 350 builds but I’m here to tell you I’ve built 350’s on every level from bone stock to high compression high rpm combos and 400’s is about as good as it’s gonna get with stock rotating assembly and without getting completely unreasonable with it which I would never justify other than to satisfy cubic inch restrictions depending on which facet of Motorsports we are talking. Personal opinion?: I no longer find it worth it to upgrade a 350 beyond a good sounding camshaft on the initial build, otherwise I tell my customers just to go to a 383 you will never build a 350 that will satisfy you like going from the 350 to a 383 will.

@NRJracing10 ай бұрын
i used a bowtie block on a 400 that i built around the same time as this one, nothing bad to say about a bowtie but this block was outfitted with billet splayed caps and is much stronger than a typical 4 bolt bowtie, in fact if i built this engine with said bowtie im not sure how long it would hold together consistently spraying it with as much nitrous as this one is currently running. It would be fine naturally aspirated but with the kit i would not be confident in the caps on the bowtie

@JimBronson Жыл бұрын
Out of the box stock vs stock the LS has much better head flow. But if you are upgrading anyway, you can buy SBC heads that will flow a lot. The other thing the LS has is the 6 bolt cross bolted mains, they hold up pretty well to 10 lbs of boost with no modifications. If you're building something up that's completely custom top to bottom, you can make just as much power with an SBC as you can with an LS, inch for inch.
