I agree. There are infinite combinations of curl patterns not to mention that many people have a few different textures throughout their hair. In the end you have to learn your hair and be comfortable with it. It's trial and error. It's a journey. Thank you for this video.

i agree that knowing your curl type (3a, 4b, etc) is the least important factor when it comes to knowing your hair. knowing your porosity, texture, and other things you mentioned are more helpful.

Yes! Great video, Narada. I recently started caring for my hair in a way specific to its porosity and the appearance of the curl pattern has changed. This just adds to the frivolity of the curl pattern when it's look can change so easily.

I live in a small town outside of Rochester NY and would love to book with you off the strength of the skills and education in hair that you display in your videos. My hair is extremely matted and only took one month to start looking like The Weekends. I have 3 different type of curl patterns and I’m not sure the porosity but I literally have to squeeze it under water for it to get wet and only takes moments for it to air dry. The last time my hair was done was March 24, 2023 when I twisted it a few hours before I had brain surgery but ever since, I hadn’t had the strength to do it especially now that it has free formed locked.

Great video, but I wish there was more acknowledgement about the fact that this is fueled by marketing tactics and/or schemes to get folks to buy their products. It's just another way to get people to spend money and avoid losing their consumer base. Even more mainstream lines are coming out with "natural" products (some are really awful) simply to increase their bottom line. Being truly informed is the best answer, and I commend you for doing just that and helping others do the same.

Great hair typing vid! I know people hate the subject, but when you are new to the concept of natural hair and growing out new hair after years of relaxer, sometimes you have no clue what your hair even looks like, let alone how to take care of it and what it can 9and cant) do....

Do you think there can be a link between porosity and the others (ex moisture absorption, etc)? Or is each category distinct from the others? Just curious ...
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod 10 жыл бұрын
TrueHealth27 No, all of these categories are distinct but this is just the tip of the iceburg. They all tie in and affect one another. For example, it is rare, but most people that have coarse (thick hair strands) typically do not hair thick (high density) hair, simply because the large size of the hair follicles take up too much space on the scalp. Like I discussed one of my older videos in this series, your follicle shape can determine your curl pattern and size of the follicle shape will determine your hair texture as well. There are so many factors that affect your hair and how it behaves but hopefully this video will help you find other youtubers that you can more closely compare your hair with besides just curl pattern.

And I love your videos

If you have time, could you please suggest a a sealer for high porosity. i can honestly tell you this is the first time I am hearing of the porosity scale. I have never been able to get advise on how to keep my hair hydrated - I 've tried several products but my hair remains dry even after applying product so I resorted to carrying either a spray with water or leave-in-conditioner which I spray in my hair hourly.

very informative. I learned alot from this video. Ur so funny! I would like you to kind of expound more or the protein topic. How can we find out if we are protein sensitive, how can we tell how much protein is in a hair product, if we look at the ingredients list can we pick out the different names or types of protein in a product? Also what do you know about mineral hair softeners like New Options by Errol Crockett? Are they good or bad for natural hair? Is just a chemical process like keratin treatments? Please answer back, I will wait with bated breath!

Thank you for sharing some great information, it was very helpful to me! My questions to you- Is ph more important to different hair textures and porosity (eg: fine textured, high porosity naturals should always look for low ph products)? Is weather/seasons ever a consideration for using more/less protein on the hair (provided your not protein sensitive)? Thanks again and you have a new subbie!

I know this is an old video, I always thought I had low porosity hair but from the examples I seem to have high. I don't retain moisture but when doing the water test, my hair stayed on top. Now i know you said some ppl can have combination porosity I have been natural for five years this last year just taking the time to learn my hair. Is it possible that I have combination porosity while my hair is all natural? Sorry for the long rant. TIA

Great video! Very informative! What do you think about PH balance? Does that play a key role with curly or kinky hair?
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod 10 жыл бұрын
pH definitely plays a big role in hair. I honestly have never went as far as testing the pH of my products. But understanding pH and how it works can help with retaining moisture, smoothing the surface of the hair, and keeping your hair healthy. In my next video in this series, I plan to discuss ph and how it affects your hair.

I think for the most part ssk are unavoidable with kinky/curly hair, especially if you wear it out a lot. You can minimize them by keeping your hair stretched, ends moisturized/sealed, and trimmed more often. My daughter is a 4b with very fine hair, high density. If I allow her hair to be wet and ends dry unstretched, she will get knots that I have to cut.

I have to say that 4C hair DOES have a curl pattern. 4C hair of course is coarse but does not in no way mean they don't have a curl pattern. Their hair is just extremely coiled and compact.
