That figure of hundreds of kW to hundreds of MW of power on aircraft (and ships) transmitters sounds like utter nonsense. That's the ballpark of small to medium power plants. I've googled and the highest figure I found was 25kW and that was a stationary ground radar. Normal figures were maybe up to 1kW. If I'm wrong, please someone provide a reliable source to correct me.

I think they mean total power, not transmitted power.

Nah, that's an absolutely absurd figure. Some aircraft with ADS-B would be lucky to have 100kW... in general. Edit: Ah nevermind, he's talking about total power which makes far more sense.

I think thats comparing the hypothetically available power one could use ships and aircraft have engines that produce many megawatts of power and can have generators attached to them that produce hundreds of kilowatts of electricity so powering something like a 1kW transmitter is absolutely no big deal for them cubesats tend to have around 1 watt of pwoer supply IN TOTAL so having it transmit at 20mW is a higher percentage of oyur total available energy being used for your transmitter than a plane or ship transmitting at 1kW
