Hi I've had mixed feedback about using backing tracks (ie music) in some of my videos. This video doesn't have backing tracks in the main content. If you prefer me using backing tracks, please reply wth a YES. If you don't like me using backing tracks, please reply with a NO. This will help me produce videos in a format that most prefer. Many thanks for your support. Cheers Andrew

Andrew Whale. No, much prefer the way you did this one. I get some idea of what’s going on from the sound of the machinery. Good project I have added it to my list, thanks.

Hi Andrew Again I am so impressed with the quality of your content and your easy presentation style which is a joy to watch. No unnecessary waffle just straightforward information including those issues you experienced along the way which will help your subscribers, new and old, to learn from your mistakes. Amusing as well as informative your lessons are thoroughly enjoyable. Well done again from one Yorkie to another. Regards Paul

Hi Paul - many thanks for such positive feedback. I do try to cover each stage in a project to try to help others who are new to turning. And, being Yorkshire, I just tell it how it is - warts and all. Have a great Christmas. All the best. Andrew

Nice one Andrew. If I could make a couple of suggestions. One would be that you need to crank up you lathe speed a good bit right from the outset. I my opinion it appears you do most of your turning with a fairly low lathe speed. The other suggestion I would make is to set a depth gauge referencing off the front face of the doughnut chuck when turning the first eye of the Owl to size and depth. The setting on the depth gauge can then be used to establish the second eye much more easily. The light pencil mark you established on initial set-up is your visual size reference. If made the same size and depth they should match. Real nice Owls all the same. As for backing tracks I would say no.
@tiddlerfromtad
@tiddlerfromtad 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. Thank you so much for the advice. I think you are correct regarding speed. I tend to think the same when turning but don't really want to get out of my comfort zone. I think it's maybe time for me to bite the bullet! Great idea about depth. Also, thanks for the vote. Have a great Christmas. Cheers Andrew

Hi Jeff - I'm glad you found the video useful. I often fall into the trap of buying gadgets (it's nice to spoil yourself), but quite often it's possible to make your own - especially if they are round and you have a lathe - ha ha. Thanks for subscribing too. Cheers Andrew

Hiya nice owls, I havnt tried anything with a donut chuck before but just a pure guess to get the eyes the same size is to connect the crosses made by the circle overlaps and extend the line top and bottom, when turning the second circle you keep stop starting the lathe to see when the edge of the 2nd eye meets where that line you drew touches the 1st eye so then you have them symmetrical 👍
@tiddlerfromtad
@tiddlerfromtad 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. Many thanks for the suggestion. The main thing I struggled with was the depth of curvature of the eyes. Jim, below, suggested using a depth gauge so I will give that a try next time. Thanks again. Andrew
@markhobster8113
@markhobster8113 7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Whale ok mate another thing you could try is a rectangle piece of card and shape the longest side to match the first eye you cut, then check the second as you go using the flat section either side of the curve you cut against the uncut wood 👍 this will also give depth and curvature if you want it exact

Nice to see the owl take shape without all the gizmo's Andrew. As far as backing music goes, it does have a place but, with the quality of your presentation style and method of demonstrating, I really don't think it's necessary. I have moved away from music during the turning process in my video's in favour of shortened sequences in real time. As aonother commentor here has said, hearing the tone of the wood imparts a lot of indirect information to the viewer. Music has its place, particularly for introduction and summing up as it helps to create a channels identity but however you wish to present your project video's is fine by me. I'll still be watching and learning ☺. Cheers from Lancashire.

Nice job on the owls Andrew. They turned out really good! Would using a piece of 5/8” or 3/4” thick piece of plexiglass for the top piece of the donut chuck make it easier to turn the eyes? And would the plexiglass be strong enough? Just subscribed. Ron

Hi Ron - thanks for the suggestion. I will definately give it some consideration next time I have a go at this. I have recently got sidetracked with a metalworking lathe and a mill, but hope to get back to woodturning soon. Thanks for subscribing. All the best. Andrew

No to the background music. Much better with out. Still had to turn the volume down when it blared out at the end. I mark out the eyes, drill the holes for the eye stems then use them to centre between the cup chuck & revolving centre. Turn the eye sockets, cut off the centre pips & sand with a 50mm sanding pad held in the chuck.
