We had a theft of narcotics at my pharmacy, the person was caught and charged. They did no jail time and when we asked the court to at least pass a judgement to have the thief pay for the value of what was stolen the judge refused, subpoenaed us, treated us like the criminal and passed judgement that the criminal only repay the wholesale cost of the drugs, not the retail value. The judge literally said "why should the defendant pay more than the pharmacy paid?" Can you even imagine a court system that the punishment for theft is the criminal is allowed to pay the wholesale cost of the goods stolen and then be off scott free!? Thats the NY legal system.

I live in a nice neighborhood and nobody steals here. The next neighborhood over is the ghetto but nobody goes there because there is no reason to... You don't even need to go there to buy drugs. This is why there are food deserts, and have been for decades. There was so much theft at grocery stores, the stores couldn't get insurance any more. They only locate in better areas now, and poorer ppl get to ride the bus for a couple of hours and transfers to get food...or they go to a bodega.

Chattanooga, Tennessee and Fayetteville, North Carolina both have shopplifting rates of 80 per 100,000. NYC has a theft rate of 17 per 100,000. Why don't we hear more about towns and cities in the US that are significantly worse than NYC? Should stores all close down in Chattanooga? By your measure, they shouldn't even consider building a store in Fayetteville or Chattanooga.

He has even had a veto overturned by the council so if they want things to change they might have to start with the city council. It is frustrating but all politicians are beholden to lobbyists. Even if they get in with the best of intentions the lobbyists come and there is no way to serve the people and the lobbyists. Lobbyists pay well too. This has been going on in San Francisco for at least 2 years. Because of the sheer number of theft cases in courts, a law was passed that you can steal up to $999.00 worth of merchandise and it's only a misdemeanor. Anything over that is considered a felony, but yet again, the jails are over whelmed as are the courts so no one is being punished. Businesses are shutting down and I don't blame them.

And yet... everyone going to jail caused its own problems which it behooves us to remember: jails are expensive and can be full. Back then, they were constantly being built at great expense and overcrowded, leading to dangers to guards and injustices to convicts (yes, they have SOME rights). Unless you're happy about all these costs, perhaps it behooves us to think of other solutions that might work better. Perhaps there are none. But being overly reactive often makes problems worse.
@silverbird4252 күн бұрын
@@Mereologist I think you miss the point. A convict can be sent out of state if another state jail or prison has room and likely cheaper than NY or NYC Alternately, they can be sent to a labor camp if they are low risk of flight. If they are here illegally, they can be deported for 'victimless crimes'. If its assault and battery, attempted murder, rape, etc., their account has to be settled before deportation. That has its own issues and problems. Really, if someone has thirty arrests for shoplifting, would society not be better off if he were paving a road in a wilderness area? The craziest thing about the stolen goods is the sell it for basically the exact same price in the store. The person buying the Stone good isn’t getting a cheaper price. They might be saving a dollar because of the increased prices, but most people who steal things and resell them, sell them for the market price

Just 39 stores are leaving? I would have thought a lot more than that. Stay safe Cash.

Add the 39 stores to the ones that already left and I would say a lot have left.

I bet their local council, are trying their level best to talk up a good talk, to business owners in New York, trying to get them to not close for good, but I'm afraid, if businesses don't want to stick around in that certain location, then they won't. They have a right to pack up and leave to somewhere new.

I live in Atlanta and saw a guy in our local Aldi absolutely stuffing his winter coat full of fancy and holiday chocolates and confections. He must have gotten over fifty individual large items. I told the cashier who said "At least he's not stealing steaks and racks of ribs..." and let the guy just walk on out. These are some sorry times we're living in.
@Not_interestEd-Күн бұрын
To be fair, the Aldi's guy probably wasn't paid enough to care. Employers HATE younger generations because the internet is the one place the Media cannot completely control. And that younger generation grew up being taught to stand up for themselves, they've seen the rampant corruption, and are done trying. No loyalty? No respect, no slavery.

Well they voted blue all around for years. And demonized Rudy Giuliani who had saved the city. Will not be sad not even one second. My NY aunt finally woke up only after receiving 3 punches in the faces and 2 days at the hospital. What can I say, people are dumb and believe TV and University horse chit taught there.

It's kind of crazy to be old enough to have seen the internet argue for YEARS that jailing shoplifters is a bad thing (and racist, also) and shouldn't be done, and now watch all of NYC and some other places be like "uhhhh, why are politicians just allowing this?" ... I don't know, maybe cause you guys told them they should??? Why are we acting like this isn't something people have been saying for years and years?

I'm planning to retire at 59 in another country outside the US that is free, safe and very cheap with a high quality of life and good healthcare. I could fully just rely on only my SS if I wanted to when that times arrives but l'll also have at least one pension, a 403 (b) and a very prolific Investment account with my Stephanie Stiefel my FA. Retiring comfortably in the US these days is almost impossible
