This trip is definitely the best adventure we have taken Perseverance on and without a doubt the most memorable.
43 miles and almost 11 and a half hours of cruising, from the stress of the waves to the joy of the beach with a really wonderful group of people.

► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

There are many, many videos on KZbin and I've watched quite a few but I can honestly say this was the best 'adventure' vid. that I've seen - it had everything; build up, heading out to open sea in a flat- bottomed boat, choppy conditions at sea, beaching on the dunes and the drone shots, 'flying' past Kings Lynn and the hairy journey up the Great Ouse to Denver. Brilliant stuff - congratulations to all involved.

Deliberately grounding on a sand bank the size of the Isle of Dogs must have been pure magic? David's drone shots show just how much George was enjoying himself! If it had been me, I would have been wound up like a clock spring all day. The very real drama you had on the Ribble Link was far more instantly dangerous, where this trip was, by most measures, a leisurely cruise on Britain's lesser traveled (by narrowboats) waterways. However, the potential for disaster was clear. Just by having to go round those work boats on the pipeline, put you in to much rougher water and added miles to your journey. Brilliant, brilliant vlog and thanks to everyone involved - I know Darryl was "paid crew", but worth every penny. Even in the last half mile, (further?) he made the very reasonable decision to brest up. Although not, in the event, really necessary, that decision could only be made some distance away, not at the moment you needed it! Thank you to all for one of the most riveting narrowboat vlogs of all time. Well done everyone.

Funny, I watch more of your videos than David's or Lorna's (though I'm subscribed to all three channels), but KZbin in its wisdom offered me David's video first. I saw mention of The Wash, and wasn't at all surprised to see that he was doing it with ye, not on his own boat. You two seem to be by far the most adventurous of the narrowboaters I follow. This video was lovely. Exciting, but also somehow sweet. Thank you for making them.

'Minimal List" was not always achieved today, although 'Wobbly' was pretty accurate, probably in more directions than they'd care to experience. You can be sure that George will squeeze extra hard next time you bring out his life jacket. Little detail: seals are known in both Dutch and German as 'sea dogs'. To me it looks like The Wash is similar to the Wadden Sea (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadden_Sea), except that the Wadden Sea is bordered by islands, and stretches all the way from the Netherlands to Denmark. It does have seals though.

Hmm… we’re not planning another Wash trip just yet. What you might want to do is contact Daryl, our guide, and let him know your interest. He might have a better idea of boat groups that are planning a crossing, and could maybe make some more helpful suggestions. Might also be some Wash-related Facebook groups where you could make the right connections. It’s a trip well worth doing, but might be a bit hard to organize if you can’t find someone already considering a crossing. M

Coincidence: Google just told me that today in 2019 we were moored below a flooded Stamp End lock on our way to Boston for our Wash crossing. Our biggest panic was that Ali got locked in the toilet as the time for the tide to equalise approached - he was sprung just in time. We went into the Nene, which is easier to ride the tide on because it's much straighter - right until you get to Wisbech where it's full most of the way across with floating pontoons with expensive white boats tied to them. Stopping from 10mph and getting onto the visitor moorings is a little stressful. Great video, and glad you enjoyed it. Enjoy the fens. S.

it's beautiful, and so very wide. Thanks Speedboat Wobbly (and crew) and Speedboat Perseverance (and crew) for your endeavours. I'm surprised the NB's are this seaworthy, but I don't think I'd have courage to take my house out there, if I owned one? Having done some sailing on the Great Lakes, this is great. I do think the trip time from Boston to Denver here in the US is considerably longer?

Narrowboats are more stable than they look, but the big problem is that they have no buoyancy. If it all goes wrong they sink in seconds. Then what?
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 3 жыл бұрын
They actually aren't that bad on buoyancy ... that's why working boats of old could carry quite a few tonnes of cargo, fully laden down so their gunwales were riding on the waterline ... but yeah, let water in and there's nothing keeping that steel up on its own. Hence why we try so hard not to do that! M
@MrGlennBlack
@MrGlennBlack 3 жыл бұрын
Forgive my question but why did you go out to sea could you not just go on the canal to your destination? I know widebeams can’t get from north to south on the network but I thought narrowboats could? Either way great adventure, I wonder how many narrowboats have been sunk on this journey.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 3 жыл бұрын
We could have gone the long way round, back up from Boston to the Trent, down to the Grand Union, then back via Northampton and across the Nene and Middle Levels, but where's the adventure in that?!? As for sinkings ... I haven't been able to find any word of any narrowboat coming to grief on the Wash trip ... not sure if that's because it so rarely happens, if it's not as dangerous as it looks, or if they've just been lucky! M

Jo if you are into seals and are near Bedford look out for one in the water. We were in the lock with it and it followed us towards Bedford. Every time I went to take a photo it went underwater.

If you're in salt water for any length of time you need different anodes, but it shouldn't matter for a short trip like this.

Its a good idea to rinse out the lockers at the front where the water came over the bow.

I thought that you can't take a long boat/narrow boat out on the sea, does the coastguards know about it.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 3 жыл бұрын
You can legally take them out to sea, you just might look like a damned fool when they come drag you out of the brine. I'd let the coastguard know for certain if venturing out of the Wash and on to the North Sea proper, but within it you're relatively safe and they don't need to be told. M

You have done a number of videos that I have called FANTASTIC. The gauge has not shifted as they are what they are. BUT. You guys have crossed the line and you cruised right into FANTASTIC Squared. What a blast! Poor George! He appeared to be clinging to Lorna, wishing she would pick him up and enfold him like he was a pup. Initially, I expected him to kiss the ground when you ran aground on the sandbar. But, bounding DOES make more sense as he IS a dog. Poor Alan, after all of the prep before the crossing. This reminds me of that scene in Out of Africa, when she is transporting cattle to the troops and the lion attacks. "The gods are happy. They PLAY with us.". I almost asked when we would see part deux, but no pressure. Great fun! Thanks!!

WOW balls of steel ! Tiny motors and flat bottom boats ! Used Pilots on our bigger 290 ft Offshore Ships, they know the waters ! We had bow and azimuth thrusters and HHP in reserve ! Bravest and best Narrowboat video I have ever seen ! I have seen quite a few ! There are Narrowboaters and GOAT NARROWBOATERS !!! Greatest Of All Time - GOATs but my Hat is off to the Pilot for his seamanship on an an iffy vessel with no power !

First video I've seen on your channel. Quality stuff, will definitely watch more! As an experienced blue-water sailor, I feel like my reaction to the adventure was almost the opposite of yours in parts. The bit in open water seemed - to me at least - relaxing and enjoyable. But going up the river at the end in all that current? You all were laughing and I'd have been absolutely petrified, even with a pilot. Nerves of steel on your crew for certain! Happy to see everyone made it through safely.
