@@skilldeadly8888 as a somehow experienced cat sailor i capsize not very often now. So why not leaving of the lifejacket? Very easy question and even easier answer. Cause everybody, regardless how exoerienced he is, could be caught offguard. Happened to me last month in a very wavy sea at 25kn of wind. I already was exhausted but still able to pull a rope. But after a capsize due to a too fast manouver and the first effortless attempt to get it back up i was totally weakened. Without a lifejacket i could have drowned easily. The only thing i was able to do was lying on my back. We were accompanied by a motor boat for security reasons, so it wasn't a big issue. But without a jacket he could have been there too late. Never go out into rough conditions or even into good ones that could change easily without proper equipment.

I highly highly doubt if you’re making a wake that it would make a bit of difference going through there. The waves are already bigger than any boats wake. I think the thinking behind the “no wake zone” is because it’s a fairly narrow canal with lots of back and forth traffic so they don’t want ppl blasting through there too close to other boats. Either way this Canal is a perfect example of why a lot of ppl should be required to take a boaters safety course upon purchase of a boat because there is just too many morons and ppl that lack common sense out there.

@alinelson7524

Personally, and as an owner of a bow rider, I think the problem here is not so much the boat but the distribution of weight within the boat and the failure of the ‘captain’ to recognise and react to the dangerous situation he was about to put his passengers in. Correct speed, trim and weight distribution would have seen the boat go through there without too much issue in my opinion.

Most of these could have been avoided by the captain slowing down and moving the weight to the back of the boat.
@Jonathan.D
@Jonathan.D Жыл бұрын
This man has the answer!!! It's a two part solution to keep this from happening! Moving all the weight from the front to the back is just as important in almost each of these situations. I don't understand why these people are in the front to begin with? That's the worst place to sit when there's even a moderate chop. My dad was a captain and was always reminding us to stay in the back of the boat when underway. Even when it's calm, you can hit a wake and send everyone flying. Next to the No Wake sign, there should be a Sit In The Back sign. 😄

@trvman1 They definitely had no clue and just panicked. That is the fault of the "Captain" of the vessel. He should have moved the people to the back to prevent more water from coming over the front. If the deck had scuppers, the deck could have drained out. The first thing I always install on my boats is scuppers. If you take water over the bow, you throttle up, and the water runs right out. I had a little 17' skiff that got filled to the gunnels when a larger boat swamped us. All I did was give it full throttle, and in less than a minute, it was empty.

Stuffing the bow about 10 times taking on a huge amounts of water during each stuffing. Boat not trimmed correctly. Fenders hanging off the side of the boat (rookie behavior) And the best part, they didn’t even look for life vests until the boat was sinking. These are your kids you’re putting in danger. Boating is a blast and really fun until somebody gets hurt, drowns or dies. Safety is everything so you can go out and have fun and not have to worry. At least one kid was wearing a life vest. PS when your boat is listing to port, get all passengers on the starboard side. Pontoon boats are not made for sea conditions. Only placid water.

There were several times during that event where even a reasonably competent person at the helm could have saved it. The people at the front (and probably everyone else aboard as well) thought everything was just fine even when it was obvious that they were done. He could have trimmed up, had everyone get to the back of the boat, and got on the power a bit and changed to a 45 degree angle in order to get to the calm water ahead and let the pumps do their job. Of course, he did none of those things and just decided to keep on keepin’ on!! Haha!!

I've lived on a sizeable lake my entire life and have been around, and have owned, boats as well, and what I see is: Nearly all these boats are going way too fast for the swells. All these swamping issues are totally avoidable. Even in a bow rider, if you idle along the "submarining" effect will diminish greatly, and noting the water conditions, there shouldn't be anyone riding in the bow. Nearly everyone does not have a life preserver on, most importantly, the kids. Then you have the probability of alcohol and what not thrown into the mix. There's more, but it's just my observations. I'm not an expert and I've broken some of these rules myself over the years. Being on the water anywhere is fun, but a huge responsibility as it can be very unforgiving.

With an old but dependable 50 hp V4 Evenrude. A few times, during that passage, I found myself standing still, bow in the air, behind much larger boats, setting up standing wake waves. Earlier that day, I had been out in the ocean, and found it an easier cruise not too far off the shore line. That, was my first and last passage in the Point Pleasant canal. The bridge may have been replaced but that ledge and deep hole are still there. That boat didn't leave a standing wave, the current dropping off that shelf then coming back up makes it. And they need to just ban pontoon boats in there, they cannot handle a 1 foot chop on the bay... And I feel bad for the tug style boat but the moment Karen-shouldntwearabikini started bitching I enjoyed it. The wife of some credit card captain is gonna tell me how to run the canal GFY lady. I've got 6 knots of current and a boat with an ass bigger than hers, tooty the tug and Mrs CCCaptain may be able to maintain steerage but the sport boat is gonna see his stern pass him on 2 whistles if he tries to hold up behind them. Our family boat, 28' Bertram, used to get tossed around in the Barnegat Inlet in the 80s/90s, well before the dredging was done. My dad always used to tell us to get down from the top, sit aft-- regardless of how calm the inlet appeared to be at first.

@@Gyuresssz Because NL is situated on the northsea, with the entire western and northern border. We are the delta of 3 major European rivers (Rhine, Meuse and Schelde) Half of NL is below sealevel. We created much of it by taking it from the sea. Weve been seafearing for 1000s of years. Tiny as we are, we ruled the worlds seas for a century. Everyone is a sailor here, as we are all raised with water and all are married to the sea. Every native can swim and passed 1 or more exams to prove it. For going out in motorized boats like these, or even sailing boats, you need to study the rules and pass the exam for that. For westerschelde, where i live, you need 2 even, bc its a busy shipping lane with the worlds biggest ships coming through. Passing that exam is needed for every river, sea arm and sea. Only on small inlands waters (not rivers) you are allowed to boat without a license and engine hp's are very limited for those. (usually 5hp or smth) and then there still are speed restrictions. Every dutch boy spends numerous hours and days on the beach. Thats the thing your parents buy you; a bucket and a shovel. And then you can go study the water, as it takes down your sandcastles when the tide comes in. And you learn on a small scale how water behaves. Thats what we do and what we are. And those rules and so are in place bc of many deaths on the water or by the water. And even with those rules, people still die. But not as much as it used to be. What you see in this video (and more like it) would NEVER be allowed in NL. There is NO way. If anyone would try, they would probably jail them. And for good reason, bc what these idiots are doing is asking for casualties. Those bow rider and other constructs have no place even near a sea. And then they are on there with children and babies even, without life jackets. No wonder there is continuous guard by water police, bc without the number of casualties would be staggering. A kid or even adult can easily be swept from the boat on those bow riders. Then with some whirling there, possibly undercurrent, you can fish up a dead body somewhere around there, bc you are not going to be able to save them.

The state police's local headquarters are located directly off of the canal a few hundred yards from the south end of the canal, so it's not unusual to find a patrol boat nearby, especially on a busy summer day. This HQ and it's marina can be seen clearly from 3:05 to 3:20 and the watch tower is often monitored by staff who will get on a loudspeaker to scold passing boats that do not adhere to the no-wake requirement. Despite this, navigating this stretch can be harrowing on the best of days, evened for seasoned locals. Tidal conditions often cause the current in the canal to make it difficult to achieve forward progress while still obeying the no-wake restriction. This fact alone can cause standing waves to form behind vessels that continue onward. Couple that with high boat traffic, large yachts, a bridge with two supports located within the channel itself that significantly speed up water flow locally and reduce clearance, and wave reflection from the bulkheads and you've got a potential for disaster for the uninitiated. It is imperative to trim your boat accordingly to achieve a high bow stance and to keep passengers as far back as possible. Regardless of no-wake rules, it is still necessary to actively work the throttle to avoid pitching into the wake.

The only one who tried, and actively worked the throttle, was the pontoon boat. Should have moved everybody to the back and made sure EVERYONE had life jackets on before entering that battlefield, and he didn't react quickly enough, but he at least had a decent grasp of what to do once it hit the fan.
@nonsequitor
@nonsequitor Жыл бұрын
@@notexpatjoeif you want to be that pedantic, the *actual* correct solution is to balance your boat however it needs to be balanced. With a decent bow that might be midship, but for others including pontoons, depending on load out, you may well want to put people as far rear as possible. The only definitively bad idea is putting people, or maybe children on the bow.
@JamesLEagan
@JamesLEagan 10 ай бұрын
At risk of being pedantic, I'm not so sure outboard trim is always good for raising the bow. At slow speeds the prop is pumping water out from under the back of the boat and trimming out will add more weight by pushing the water higher. Then the cantilevered portion in the front of the boat (if any) has to be supported by the center going deeper. A big factor seems to be the short waves when the shape between peaks happens to match the curve of the boat. Shallow water compared to wave height causes that, I think, no matter what causes the wave's height.

I can't believe my eyes watching this... my dad and I fished the middle Atlantic Seaboard for years - all the major bays, inlets, and ocean approaches - never once shipped water over the bow. Had a couple of followers come over the transom - but very rare. Always had a boat with high freeboard and prow. I see these designs with tumblehome bows, and shake my head - who would buy such craft for the ocean? And pontoons?? LOL! You gotta be kidding.... I call it "How to drown your kids...".

@@buickinvicta288 Pontoons are no fun in waves like that, but at the same time, a pontoon is a plywood platform sitting on top of two sealed buoyancy chambers. Doesn't really matter how much water they take on, it's all going to run off again because there's no where for it to pool up and unless you puncture the pontoons, it's not going to sink. So they aren't in any more danger of sinking than any other boat along there.

My Uncle lived at the edge of this Canal, just across from the State Police Marina. Watching the Boats struggle as they came and went was entertaining, but many were obviously in danger. Although this is a long way from Atlantic Ocean Access, it is narrow and subject to Wakes and Tides which is often too much for the Smaller Boats that are designed for Bays.
