I was there in Stockholm years ago and had never heard of this event before. I'm from the United States. It is absolutely beautiful. It was snowing and the parade of horses went right by my hotel window. Magical and beautiful. I hope they never lose this tradition. Mycket bra!!

Every year since you're 6-16 years old, its not fun in the end, thats why the tradition its ending. Bring people who likes to sing, its very hard to preform this (You will be faint and fall)

Thanks to the erudite commenters (and my friend) who helped to explicate and undersgtand the how and why of this celebration What one gentleman below said bears repeating, I think: " [T]he reason the tradition survived and has taken on the expression we see today is because Lucia's theme of light in the dark resonates deeply with us northerners who experience the long and dense midwinter darkness. The message of feeling hope knowing that the light will return once more is impossible then to not find touching. I can't speak for everyone, but I would say it's not really celebrated because of religious tradition, but because of something much, much deeper and more pure." The Swedish actor Lennart Jäkel tell us the legend of Saint Lucia. It believed she was born in 283 a.d in Syracuse situated on the now Italian island called Sicily. (At this point in time it was a part of the Roman Empire.) She became a Christian early in her life. Being a Christian at that time was rare and even illegal (in the Roman Empire)! When she was 20 she was betrothed to a man who didn't share her faith, Lucia was beside herself because of it! She broke it of and gave her entire dowry to the poor! The fiancé was so enraged that he reported her to the authorities (for being a Christian). When she was to be taken away she was rooted to the spot and could not be dragged away even by oxen. They tried to burn her at the stake but she would not burn. In the end she was decapitated and still today many people make the pilgrimage to the church were st Lucia is burried.

Much of these celebrations have their roots in pagan times. Before Lucia it was called 'Stora Lusse'. Probably from 'Stora ljuse', Old norse 'Gróta liós' "Great light". From beginning a lightwake on the longest night. But since Västergötland, where tradition is strongest, had much contact with Kyiv-Rus in the 11th to 13th c, it is very likely that they borrowed a lot from Kolada-celebrations in medieval Ukraine and Russia...

With the old julian calender, December 13th was the midwinter night, the darkest day of the year. In pre-christian Scandinavia, this was seen as a night were supernatural activities occurred more than any other winter night, and it was deemed best to sleep as little as possible, to avoid danger. We still have that tradition today, although "Lussevaka" now basically means young people partying and staying up. Anyhow, later on a light-bringing female figure was introduced, some say with pagan roots aswell. This light-bringing woman then of course had to be turned into a christian saint, when Scandinavia was christianised. Hence the celebration of St Lucy (Sankta Lucia). Sweden is highly secularized today, but celebrating the lightbringer in the darkest of times remains=) Glad Lucia, today on the 13th of December!

What I do not understand is the Santa Lucia holiday in sweden! I mean Santa Lucia is a Sicilian, catholic saint. In Sicily we celebrate Santa Lucia on 13th Dezember, it is a big Thing. So how Did the sicilian, catholic Santa Lucia come to the Protestant Sweden! And the Swedish sing even the same Song like we do in Sicily, of Course they sing in swedish but the Music is the same!!!!! I assume the Lutheran Church just broke with the Pope but the Lutheran Church kept some roman-catholic rituals.. like the Anglican churche maybe...

Your guess is correct. The Lutheran Church, especially where it is still genuine (you have the same in the Roman Catholic Church...), still follows the order of the mass, believes in the real presence of the Lord in and under wine and bred, follows the church year, etc. Many Lutheran priests were the same vestments etc. (The black German gown is an exception invented by a Prussian king.) It did not so much break with the Pope as the Pope did not want to answer the theological question asked by the reformers of the Lutheran reformation and had even been almost pressed by the Emperor to do so. Lutherans are not Protestants in the modern meaning of the word!

The Swedish lucia tradition has some origins in a pre-christian mid winter celebration. It was repurposed into the santa lucia holiday when Sweden was christianised and survived the reformation since it was so ingrained in tradition. The song was brought to Sweden and translated far later of course.
