This is a brilliant program - wonderful unity of music, choreography and costumes. Plus the exciting elements. The lift is incredible but looks risky, so does the side-by-side spin where they got precariously close together. In my opinion they deserved even higher marks.
They are both so beautiful! I am an old woman and have been watching Olympics my entire life. This performance by Mishkutenok and Dmitriev is my favorite performance of anyone ever. Their good looks, outstanding athleticism,beautiful costumes, music, and choreography will - in my estimation - never be matched. It is sad that so many rumors and drama followed them off-ice, but in a twisted sort of way, it added to the mystique. How I would love to see them perform again!! Thanks to KZbin, at least the past can be revisited.

I wish people could just appreciate what happened here in 1994 because we will never see a pair competition like that again. Such a waste of time to nitpick and tear down the top three, because you are never going to be able to compare them. Maybe all Olympic skating should be divided into modern technical/jumping events and traditional ballet/artistic events because what you are seeing now is people who think Nancy Kerrigan was boring, that Oksana didn’t jump, and think Tonya Harding was robbed of some kind of Olympic gold medal that she never earned. Not everyone can skate the same way or have the same body size, and we don’t want everyone to skate the same way. G&G and M&D deserved Olympic gold medals for what they did in Lillehammer, compared to what you see from pairs most other years, and B&I did as well. In a field of dozens of the best pairs in the world, would it really kill anyone to hand out three gold, three silver and three bronze? Or at least three gold, no silver, and no bronze when the circumstances warrant-like here? It is true that without the pros B&I would have won gold. I’m tired of people ripping one or the other down when all three were spectacular.

I hate how society views muscular athletes as fat. Like Serena Williams. She is solid muscle. She can run circles around every hater on the court. Not everyone is “thin” or has the societal ideal slim body. That would be boring.

You know, Scott never - and I mean never - would say anything intended to be offensive. Gordeeva is tiny. She's relatively 'big' in comparison only. That's pretty much what he was referring to. Things like height and weight change the equation in skating, as physics play an important part here.

"SHE is a big girl", says Scott Hamilton. That guys's obsession with Katia Gordeeva causes him to be insulting to her competitors. He's a desperado.

Natalia was definitely a larger WOMAN than Katia, who is actually quite tiny. Artur is obviously quite a strong guy, but it had to be more difficult to lift someone of Natalia's size than Katia's. He obviously had great admiration for both pairs. What's the big deal?
@toxic-low-key-ghost79342 жыл бұрын
@@bophreyhumgart2953 Its a big deal because why is he even commenting on someone's physical size? hes a figure skating commentator not a doctor examining her. It was totally irrelevant. I didn't get to watch the final because we were at a family members house for dinner. I did record it though. Needless to say I was devastated they lost. Many would say Anton & Elena won with flaws against a mistake free program of their opponents so it's ok because G&G were superior team. I disagree. M&D are no slouches. Everyone couldn't say enough about their artistry and skills 2 years before. In E&A's case they really were years ahead of the other team in talent & skill. They deserved the gold. With G&G they made enough mistakes I feel to have been given silver. Trust me Sale & Pelletier are no where near the level of M&D so they did not deserve gold.

Which tracks of Don Quixote did they use from Ludwig Minkus' ballet? BTW, I thought their performance was more exciting than G&G's. Katya Gordeeva is 5'1", Ntalaya Mishkutenok is 5'2 1/2". Natalya is slim and muscular UP CLOSE (nothing wrong with her) but Katya has a ballerina build with virtually no leg muscle and a slimmer waist. Scott was kind of annoying, but I knew how much he liked G&G during their initial SOI run, so I expected it.
@bophreyhumgart29536 жыл бұрын
It really says something about the quality of skating that we're still watching these programs so many years later, doesn't it? I happen to agree with you, Katrina, about the more exciting qualities of the routines of Mishkutenok and Dmitriev. I always thought of their skating as much more dynamic and inventive than that of Gordeeva and Grinkov. When Scott Hamilton called some of G&G's movements "textbook," I think that that was another difference between the two pairs: that G&G chose to focus on perfection of standard movements (throw spins, pair spins, jumps, lifts, etc.), while the other pair always managed to bring us something different and unique to admire. I remember Artur saying that in his opinion, the main difference between the two pairs was their influence: one from the Bolshoi Ballet and the other from the Moscow Ballet, although I don't remember which was which. And I always felt that what drove Artur and his partners was his passion and drama, which you can certainly see at the end of this routine, with his falling over in relief at the end of this program and his ripping his heart out and the ecstatic leap at the end of the long program.

I understand the ordinals and the marks are just placeholders, but what in the world is that US judge doing giving the reigning Olympic champions a 5.6/5.6 for a clean and dynamic program????? The US judge gave G/G 5.8/5.9 for a flawed program. Unreal. The fix was in, and yeah Scott's typical biased commentary as per usual... Everything with M/D Scott grudgingly gave some credit for, but it was still coming out in an uncomplimentary way. When they play back G/G's blown sbs spins Scott is still effusive with compliments on how wonderful this is because they ended up after about five revs to get back in sync and Scott effuses "QUALITY AND EXCELLENCE!!"
