I have worked in the hotel business since the early 1980's and waited on a number of famous people and celebrities. My favorite? Katarina Witt. The lady was beautiful, classy, gracious. She even gave me an autograph in German! She had been the victim of a stalker and here was this stranger in her hotel room. She couldn't have been nicer.

I remember seeing a DDR tv special in 1987 after Worlds, entitled “ Ein Abend mit Katerina Witt “ “ An Evening with Katerina Witt “ English translation , that ( if my German translation is correct ) that her coach Jutta Mueller signaled to Katerina not to attempt the triple loop ( rittberger) jump but Katerina landed it anyway . It is nice 👍 to see her coaches reaction when she did.

Absolut! Ich bin seit meiner Kindheit ein sehr großer Fan von Kati und überhaupt vom Eiskunstauf. Es ist der schönste Sport der Welt. Sie kommt ja aus meiner Heimatstadt, dem damaligen Karl- Marx- Stadt. Die Kür der Damen bei der WM 87' in Cinncinati, habe ich auch nachts live am Fernsehen geschaut, es war immer so spannend. Wenn sie wieder zurück war, von Weltmeisterschaften und Olympischen Winterspielen, haben wir Ihr hier zu Hause, immer einen riesigen Empfang bereitet, es war jedesmal so toll. Habe Ihr damals auch ab und zu beim Training zugeschaut. Kati, ist mit ihrem Charme und ihrer Ausstrahlung bis heute nicht zu toppen. 👍❤

I remember watching Katarina skate whenever her performance was televised. She was at that time a top performer marking her as one of the best! An absolute amazing performer that captured the crowd world wide. A beautiful young lady at the peak of her skating career, as well as being at the height of her physical beauty. Yeah.......I really liked her!! Debi Thomas was also a great contender. She was also a beautiful young woman that competed at her best!

I did, and still do have a crush on her (I'm straight). Even though her jumps are no comparison to the girls nowadays, or even in the 90s, she was the ultimate performer and commands your attention whenever she's on the ice. She and Yuna Kim still remain as my favorites, and I would rather watch a skating performance rather than a program that is packed with jumps

Say what you will about Katarina, she has been accused of being a big diva who's played gamemanship on her fellow skaters, but she is one helluva tough competitor! Witt has NEVER backed away from a challenge. Debi's big ovation right before Witt would have unnerved most skaters, but not Katarina. Ever since Debi beat her the year before at the Worlds, Katarina has said her goal was to revenge that loss. And she made true to her word here.

It wasn't too bad in Calgary since her only mistake was doubling the triple loop, but 88 Worlds was really where she faltered since her doubled both the loop and 2nd salchow. I'm a huge Katarina stan, but I personally would've given that world title to Elizabeth Manley. I really miss when Katerina had her double lutz and double flip in her programs, it would've added more variety in her later career even if they weren't triples. Opening with a double lutz + triple toe and adding a double flip to her 2nd triple toe would've still added more difficulty

Quite frankly she reaffirmed to the judges that she was still technically strong and she was able to leverage this performance into Calgary where she really underperformed . Without this great win the judges would not have given her a pass in Calgary I think . She won Calgary because she won here

She's talked about that in interviews and how before the long program- to keep from shaking, she kept applying make up- she tended to be made up, but her Calgary long program- she looked a little clownish.

Still Calgary was a weak performance and Manley should have won. It was great to see her here skating last with such speed and guts

Katarina feels the music in every program she presents, she is one with the music. And this how she is until now simply the best. Currently the new generation present 3 and 4 loop jumps, but in my opinionr you see no artistic impressions.

Das habe ich bei anderen Läuferinnen, auch Debbie Thomas, vermisst. Da hätte auch jede andere Musik zu spielen können, es würde immer gleich aussehen. Katharina ist und bleibt die Queen. ❤

Sometimes it seems to me that we experienced several images of beauty and elegance. At the end, they are graded. I would say that Katarina, Debi, & Caryn were all great. I know it will never happen. But, I would like us to get to a point where we celebrate artistry, rather than measure it.
