That lovely interplay of their arms and legs conveying tenderness and love. Oh that Christopher Dean is a brilliant choreographer!

I do agree with you . They are utterly amazing and , the best in the World in my opinion ! I shall never tire of watching them. I looked up Betty Calloway recently ,seems she became a skater as her second choice. She had auditioned for the Royal ballet at 16 and was rejected because of her height. And had a good career in spite of life’s twists etc.

An incredible career - the ballet background does not surprise me - all of her teams had a smoothness and a finish to their movements which is reminiscent of ballet. She was also a *very* nice person, I was very young when I met her briefly. Very kind.

I honestly believe this to be them at their totally sublime best! My other favourites are "I Won't Send Roses", "Encounter", "Missing" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water", but honestly, there are so many wonderful T&D routines, and even now, in their 60's, they are coming up with little gems likes "One Day Like This", which they performed for the finale of Dancing on Ice in March 2020.

It's a small world, Denise K ! And yes, we are so lucky that many of Chris and Jayne's superb performances have been preserved on video and are available via KZbin etc. Shepherd's Song, Missing, Encounter and I Won't Send Roses are probably my favourites of their exhibition and professional routines, and I would say the Paso Doble from the 1984 season is my favourite of their competitive routines.

I've just this evening caught up with their "Dancing on Thin Ice" Alaska documentary on ITV Hub, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I missed it when it went out on, I think, New Year's Eve, but eventually caught up with it on the ITV Hub and enjoyed it. The part where Chris went under the ice was scary, though!

Probably my favourite of all of Torvill and Dean's routines. But I have to add it wasn't in London in 1985 - this was the Sports Aid Gala in Birmingham, England, in May 1986 at what is now called the Genting Arena. Sports Aid was similar to today's Sports Relief and was inspired by the previous year's Band Aid concerts. The ice skating gala sold out very quickly and an extra afternoon performance was added to meet demand.

I remember being there - I was 13 and absolutely awestruck by all the skating stars performing, particularly J,C & Robin. I always wondered why Katarina Witt wasn’t there but she lost her world title that year and imagine the East German government wouldn’t allow her

They are magic, I can’t help repeating their performances I never get tired of watching them. Actually I’m besotted with them. I find it hard to believe that they were not in LOVE so sensuous as a couple!! And to have skated for 50 years almost together all that time. They must have been in love . And to think I could have watched them live in B.ham at this time as I lived in Solihull then!! Denise, (another one)
@denisej48133 жыл бұрын
@@denisekilner2710 I too could have actually seen the gala live, I was staying in Telford with my parents at the time! I knew it would be incredibly popular, and just assumed it would be impossible to get tickets. Unfortunately, there was no internet in those days and I didn't know that they had added an extra matinee performance as the evening show had quickly sold out. I do however remember watching it live on TV with my Mom, and we were both stunned by the Shepherd's Song routine, as well as enjoying the rest of the gala. I remember Karen Barber and Nicky Slater performing the Charlie Chaplin freedance from a couple of years earlier, and Robin Cousins and several of the other skaters doing simultaneous backflips. Happy days.

@@victoriagill3337 Yes it was! The gala was wonderful, one of the best I've ever seen. As mentioned previously, I only wish I'd known beforehand that an extra performance had been added - my Mom and I would have been there like a shot! We did see Torvill and Dean in Birmingham in one of their professional shows a few years later, which was great.
