I remember the first time I watched his performance. Just move out and into my own apartment. I was broke and couldn't afford cable. One night, after a long day at work, I was searching the five and a half channels my rabbit ear antenna television offered while eating ramen noodles and settled on figure skating in lieu of depressing news or boring game shows. Fortunately, a serious Mr. Todd Eldredge came onto the ice and proceeded to blow my mind with strong mesmerizing turns that I didn't know the names of. It was truly amazing to see and near the end when he spun my jaw dropped. To this day the only word I can use to accurately describe it is magical. He spun so fast with such control that I didn't realize until he finished that I had been holding my breath. He's the reason I became a fan of figure skating and gave me something to look forward to watching after work during that first difficult year on my own. He'll always be the best and my favorite figure skater of all time.

4:10 gets me everytime -- RIGHT on the crash of the music he lands that MASSIVE triple axel. Both him and Kwan were so screwed by the Olympics moving from 1992 starting in 1994. Cause they were at the ABSOLUTE BEST in 1996.

That second triple axel was one of the most perfect triple axels ever performed. And you’re right - it was timed so well. What a beautifully constructed program. What also gets me is Rudy Galindo’s genuine happiness for his teammate and competitor.

I believe I understand what you are intending to express here, which was the IOC decision to switch from both a Summer and Winter Games every 4 years (aka a Quadrennial; which btw starting with the 1st separate Winter Games in '24 in Chamonix, except for '28, the IOC began a short lived policy that awarded one nation as the host for both Summer & Winter Games. After WWII, this policy was discontinued) to capitalizing on the hugely financially successful LA Games, in which for the first time, an Olympics ended with a huge profit from private and corporate sponsorships, versus the previous Games that were huge financial disasters. By changing to an Olympic Games format every 2 years, & keeping it that closer in the public memory, it made for much higher corporate sponsorship & commercial deals. Thus, the decision to have those 94 Games in Norway. I completely agree with the very high likelihood that both Eldredge and Kwan, both being in good physical and mental shape at these Worlds (compared to the years of Eldredge's lower back pain, and what one can only guess for Kwan in '98 and '02 was dealing with another American, free from injury and -even with hypothetically Kwan skating her best AND cleanest LP's- in both cases each having without question far superior technique that not even Kwan's artistic marks could be enough for any tie breakers. BUT, you only mention 98 and 02. As far as Kwan's best years of skating when healthy, my favorite is still 04 if I could just take it based on her nationals LP. With all of the overwhelming Olympic year pressure she faced, plus really never known for having any significant triple-triple's as consistent technical weapon, it saddens me to say but I never saw her as having been in anyway robbed of winning an Olympic Gold. Her meat and potatoes were nationals and those 5 world titles. And look at her 5 world titles. Did she win an outright gold with EVERY other serious contender- especially those with a serious triple-triple- skating clean and healthy/uninjured? Maybe once?

I love this performance. The height of the jumps, the elegance of the spins, and the choreography were just perfect. The music was an excellent choice. It added so much to the program. No one does a scratch spin anymore, and that is so sad. It was always a fantastic sight for the ending of the program. Todd Eldredge was really on top in this performance.

Exquisite. Absolutely beautiful. First of all, to land a triple axel, not once but twice, is amazing since that jump is so freaking hard. Second of all, he landed every jump perfectly. To me, when Todd was "on", he was the best male figure skater of his era (along with Paul Wylie). He was clearly a masculine presence on the ice, while also having a really strong body awareness and sense of the music. His footwork and spins were outstanding, as well. How anyone could give him a 5.7 for technical when he skated lights out perfect is outrageous, especially with a 3A+3T and 3F+3T. A much deserved win!

Fantastic skate! Glad Todd won this World title....his skating was of truly elite quality! He should have won the title again in 1998 if the judging had not held up Yagudin that time, Todd won that freeskate by far. Todd even should have won the Silver over Yagudin at 2001 Worlds instead of the Bronze that time. He was truly remarkable to have been competitive and winning titles and World medals for so long! Contary to a dumb post below, he was NOT the weakest skater to win a world title, far from it! One thing about Eldredge, he continued to be competitive, even finally landing a quad in a competition despite an ankle injury for the last 4 years of his eligible career, upgrading his footwork, continuing to improve his spins, and doing different choreography to keep up with his younger rivals. Amazing skater--my favorite for all those reasons, great athlete and artist!

Bad thing is that he fell on his 3Axel in the Short, thus finishing fourth. Furthermore, Yagudin needed someone other than Eldredge and place 3rd or lower in The Long, and it did not happen. Everyone was wishing for Plushenkho to get ahead of Yagudin in The Long, but Plushenkho fell at least twice, hence finishing third after Eldredge and Yagudin. Plushenkho was the decisive factor in Eldredge not winning the title again in '98. In a few words, the same that happened at the 2002 Ladies Final, was what happened here!

Todd was married, but got divorced in 2009 (I think), but recently got engaged again. He is currently living and coaching in southern Florida on the Gulf Coast. As for his performance here, I think it is brilliant, powerful, and passionate. This is the kind of skating I love to watch.

Todd Eldredge was easily the best male figure skater of the mid-90's, bar none. Before the Yagudin/Plushenko rivalry came on the scene a few years later, no one could match Todd's technique and artistry. He's one of the best masculine skaters that had a great bodyline and could also be subtle in his presentation, while still projecting a strong presence on the ice. The ONLY thing he lacked was consistency. Otherwise, Stojko would not have ruled the mid-90's the way he did. It would have been Todd because when he was ON like this, no one was better at that time--not even Kulik, who was very young and immature in his presentation, and never a World Champion. The 1998 Olympic gold could easily have been won by Todd, but the ghost of inconsistency haunted him through his entire career. He's still one of my all-time Top 5 male skaters.

Robert: Thanks for recognizing Todd as one of the best. Todd's 2001 World Championships LP (I believe to the 1492 soundtrack) is spectacular, as well. He should have won that World Title too, but by that time, the Yagudin/Plushenko rivalry was in full swing. Plushenko was his usual robotic self, and Yagudin, who was terribly sick, gave an awful performance. Still, the judges didn't want to break the momentum of Yagudin/Plushenko going into the 2002 Olympics by having a third person win the last Worlds before Salt Lake City. So, they threw the title to Plushenko and even though Yagudin gave probably the worst performance of his career and shouldn't have been on the podium, they gave him silver and Todd bronze. Todd should be a two-time World Champion. Check out his 2001 Worlds LP. It's equally as good.

Okay, maybe it's just how I see them... but most skaters when they enter the flip, it's similar to a Lutz jump. With Eldredge it looks almost like an entrance to a Salchow jump. Anyone else think so? That aside, this was stunning and I'm so glad he had this championship moment at least once on a world stage - Todd deserved it.

They wanted to catch the flutzers as the straight line a la Michelle Kwan made it hard to catch the change of edge.

He deserved no less than silver @ 2001 Worlds. With all due respect to Alexei Y. (who totally deserved his OGM), he was injured, and skated a very flawed free skate @ 2001 Worlds. I am still annoyed with the judges who had the nerve to place Todd 3rd instead of second. He was practically flawless throughout all 3 phases of the comp. I guess it comes down to the judges' obsession with the "bloody" quad.

I remember that Urmanov beat out Stojko in 94. Thats why i put that there. And I think my parents recorded the Grand Prix that Urmanov won. On the same tape as this competition. When urmanov was on i could see it but, he was much more inconsistent in terms of the skating. Eldredge, while title wise not as decorated, was at least consistent. Plus, I know this is personal opinion,but I always looked forward to seeing Eldredge's Triple Axel vs. Urmanov's.
