Dr. Rajpal Brar, DPT breaks down Kyrie Irving's - Brooklyn Nets superstar - ability to stop on a dime and change direction via the lens of biomechanics and sports science, including key mental and physical components of his movement mechanics.
Here’s a table of contents, header (sub-headings):
- 0:00 Intro
- 0:22 Mental speed (Perceive, process, act)
- 1:14 Balance and coordination (stability, elite full body coordination)
- 2:15 Center of gravity (low center of mass/gravity, maintains the low position)
- 3:04 Weight shift and elastic recoil (quick, efficient weights; deweighting step back; muscle elastic recoil effect; deweighting crossover)
- 5:11 Composure (staying calm, stress neuroscience)
For those at work or the hard of hearing, I've transcribed subtitles on KZbin so sound isn't required.
For reference, I’m a DPT (Doctor of Physio) and youth basketball coach well-versed in sports science and biomechanics, and owner of 3CB Performance -  online health content, telehealth services and sports rehab & performance clinics in West LA and Valencia, CA.

Things that are always overlooked in these types of discussions are coaches and trainers. You don't figure out the game to these kinds of advanced depths on your own. You do it by collaborating with minds of people who have collaborated with minds, and distilled all of that knowledge into what works and what doesn't. I'm not denying his physical talent, but you can be the most talented player ever and never reach your real potential based on whether you have good coaches and trainers or not.

Great video! Would be cool to see how to efficiently work on these things, whats a good exercise for each one?
@3cbperformance

toyin71 It really depends on the person. Much of this is neuromuscular and requires movement training

3CB Performance so can u train it like mirror boxing, like boxers do?

tsuriel and salvation to an extent but that’s not optimal. If someone came in & wanted to do these, I’d have to assess their movement capabilities and then I’d teach them in way that creates most carry over

3CB Performance when u connect this to the way Lionel Messi moves and muscle memory with such elegance on the ball, what type of training would be optimal for the average person, cause in the end you can’t train everyone

can you do one for Lionel Messi as well? I know you've done it for his free kicks, but the man seems to be one of the best in the world (along with arguably Hazard tbh), in terms of the same ability to change direction "on a dime" from a football specific cheers!

@@3cbperformance that's brilliant man. Thanks do much! Long time viewer from the initial football injuries, but as a player these breakdowns are fascinating and I'm hoping to pick up some tips!

I can’t responsibly bc it depends on the specific person. That’s why all my training is individualized

@@3cbperformance the exact same as kyrie, the change of direction you’d typically do in a basketball game, appreciated if you told me what muscles i need to strengthen to do whats shown in the video, as i know you cant just hand out workouts, but would be great if you could start me off with what i could research on my own.
