This is the most elegant head modelling method I've seen.

For those saying that this is too fast to follow here are a few helpful tips. You can slow the video down to 0.25. That allows for you to really zero in on what he is doing. And of course you can pause as needed. As far as everything else, if you have the basic fundamentals of poly modeling in place, this is pretty easy to follow. He's not doing anything complex or tricky. Just moving vertices around, removing or adding loops to the mesh, deleting polys in certain areas (like for the mouth) etc. @ 0:14 he may have spun an edge. It's hard to tell. That is the only thing I can see that a novice would not be comfortable doing because spinning edges can mess up your topology if you don't know what you are doing. This person clearly does know what they are doing. Whether you are using Blender, Maya, or 3DS Max this is a video that can be used as a tutorial for any of those programs, again *IF* you have the basics down in each program.

yes itll be better if u download as mp4 and played back via quicktime, and step frame by frame. Software is 3dsmax...8 if i remembered correctly. But u can apply same approach in any 3d software. The goal was for building easy and simple head, topology may cause issue when applied to a complex head rig.
@tadeuvi11 жыл бұрын
Ok but you just made me argument stronger. If decide to use dyna or zspheres to build my base mesh, i ll only need to goz when my sculpting is over, when i wish to retopo, and if i goz ill just need to polydraw -> step build on my zbrush work. IF i create my base mesh on max i dont need to elaborate a full head i can just have a more generic manequin, faceless but with some extra topology on the eyes, nose, mouth and ears

I believe you! And its quite sick to be able to do that, i didnt try to be a dick on comments, its just, i know what it is to start modeling on max and i remember how hard and time consuming it was at first, i just wish i started on zbrush and just left max for retopo from begining, but anyway, i still use this technique for modeling base meshes only far less complex ones

Yeah, he's using a symmetrical modeling technique available within the program. He duplicated, or mirrored the geometry and instanced it, so it would be affected the same way.

What i was saying is: modeling becomes much easier after you have scuplted because you can use your sculpt obj as a mould for your low poly model with 3ds max Freeform tools for example. But im pretty sure if you want to be a character artist you ll need to learn to sculpt, there is no way around it. Cheers

Zbrush workflow varies from artist to artist. Some use ONLY ZSpheres, some use base mesh from Maya or Max. I bet there are individuals that can even use max to create organic entities with only splines/nurbs curves. Maybe I should model a tree using splines in Max...I got some great results !!

No you didnt follow, when you create a character for a videogame, for example, and usually model the character on max and take it to zbrush to the sculpt details, or they create it all on zbrush and then bring it to max to model it there, on a low poly count, which is what i do. Either way, if you want to have a detailed character u have to sculpt, the thing is: all the detail is applied as maps, displacement, bump, normals.. so you still have a low poly model with good detail as maps

@linograndi11 жыл бұрын
That's not true. ZBrush workflow may vary. You can decide to sculpt using dynamesh, then make the retopology on your model, project the detail.... But you may even think of model your base mesh using any technique, box modeling included, import it in ZBrush and add detail using multi level sculpting. Moreover, you could start with ZSpheres, sculpt the resulting mesh, use GoZ to edit and add polygon to the mesh, go on with the sculpting in ZBrush, repeat the process....

This is very good. Though, I'd like a slower tutorial with commentary and maybe an explanation of the loops that you're supposed to have for proper rigging.

I know about create things on zr4 brush, later pass it of 3d modeler, and make a new object based on the high mesh, that is used too to make the normal maps, but poligonal creations never will be obsolete because is ppl to know fine how to make that can spend less time to the same work, inclusive, making low poli object, with his topology in 3d modeler, and playing after in zbrush, mudbox, to get the max resolution, pixar use varius models with diferent resolutions.that depend of the use of em.

Zbrush = Artistic sculpting, Max = topology. Sculpting a detailed head on much is harder and unecessary on max. By using step build to sculpt on the top of the zbrush object you ll never need to use box or zphere modelling again, it ll just be more accurate, topology oriented poly by poly sculpting. I honestly believe box and sphere modeling are obsolete arts, its a very cool video but new aspiring artists shouldnt worry about that, just go study anatomy, zbrush sculpting and topology

This video is quite awesome but also quite pointless, you have a lot of skill and few people can model that nice that fast. I remember starting as a 3d student and trying to model from box, sphere, by poly and all that but the truth is: when you learn zbrush, which is inevitable if you wish to pursue the career, it completely changes your workflow, all you ll need to do is understand the topology and use freeform -> step build on surface and thats it. Say goodbye to this box nonsense forever.
