So I 3D a die filer. in this video I show what I've made so far and what I still have to do. I Teased this a while back but due to a certain vise and some issues with building it its taken longer than planned. I wanted to get this up today since im away all of next week and didnt want to put it off any more.
Open source as usual, ill have the files up a bit later
this is still a WIP! This video is showing my progress so far, part two will be the final version which will go over the final design decisions ect. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND PRINTING YET! Files are just for anyone curious or who may be working on something similar.

My name is Chris, I am a 3D printing hobbyist from australia. I dont really specialise in anything specific, but 3D printed tools and tabletop accessories are some things youll probably seen quiet often. I do all my 3d printing on a Ender 3, which I highly recommend as a budget printer. Currently I only run 1 printer but I hope to expand that in the future. Recently acquired a photon 0 to do resin printing with. I like to share all my 3D printing ideas for free although I do plan to sell stuff in the future. Most of my projects will be mostly 3D printed with a few non printed components included, these can often be found on ebay. I actually use the cheapest filament I can get for all my projects, again I hope to change this in the future.

Soon after i started 3D printing i realized i could upgrade my 3D printer with my existing 3D printer. With the 3D printed components i made a CNC router and lathe which upgraded themselves replacing all the 3D printed components to all metal. The all metal CNC and Lathe i used to make metal components to the 3D printer. With your idea this process will begin again and a new cycle of a snake eating it's own tail will begin. Thanks!

@@dogeenjoyer7581 You can check out people on KZbin with instructions on how to make various CNC machines. They are vastly inferior to professional grade machines. They are great for hobbyists that have at some point needed one but didn't have it. It's like training wheels for an actual lathe.

"...die filing." 😁 You need a hold-down to keep the part from rising off the table as the file rises. I believe I'd have put a bit more priority on it than you have, but that could just be my CDO manifesting. 😆 I'm quite impressed. I wouldn't have considered making it out of 3D printed plastic, before seeing this.

Totally awesome build! Die filers are incredibly useful machines in the home workshop. In the EU, an old die filer can be bought for around 300-500 ... plus shipping. But most of them require a 400V outlet and are super heavy. Also, the files are hard to come by... There used to be a poor man's version though: power tool makers like Bosch and AEG used to offer die filer conversion kits for their jigsaws, consisting basically of a mount for the jigsaw (flipped on it's back), a work table and a file guard. The cheapest parallel/straight files I was able to find are the ones used in chain-saw filing jigs - around EUR 4 to 5 a piece...

Awesome project!!! Looking at the video, it looks like maybe there's room for a small chute that installs under the table that guides grit away into a container, or just out of one of the sides to keep it away from moving parts

You could add a bar with screws that are adjustable to the table area, so that the part you are griding won't pull up, it would keep it down. I can explain more if what I'm saying doesn't make sense.

Have you considered placing the drive system at the top of the machine? It would eliminate all debris issues, plus by having the main driving force down and just a compression spring to return it might cut down on the work piece jumping (I think).

When redesigning the bottom part, it might be a great idea to move the motor *far* away too. Most ebike DC motors (that I know of) contain permanent magnets, which will attract any ferromagnetic shavings coming close to it - and they'll be hard to remove, if possible at all. Love to see what you come up with in part 2 :ø) - perhaps a 10k video?

Very cool design, but I have to wonder... would a design with just the bottom part work? That would make it far less complicated to file inside a hole.

I made stain glass work and maybe it is prossible to use this for my diamond file all kind tiangular swuare round ;for the moment i use a variable speed jigscaw adapt to file whit a little electric connector ; impossible to put a picture here ; sorry

3d printed parts generally need to be larger than metal counterparts to take the stress. I wonder how a large lathe sized bearing would hold up to light lathe loads. Even if it was much larger, and less capable, a 3d printable light duty metal lathe would be revolutionary. I don't think I've seen anyone test giant plastic 30cm smooth faced bearings for strength.

yeah ive thought about using oversized bearings + my threaded rod compression technique to make a simple lathe before, perhaps using the bearings and motor from an old treadmill. A sub ~$150 metal lathe that is decently capable would be very useful for a lot of people, myself included.
