Adam Savage’s Tested

Күн бұрын

We kick off our Maker Faire 2016 coverage with this awesome telepresense robot made by researchers at the Galileo University in Guatemala. The robot's body is based off of the open-source InMoov project, with remote control via an Oculus DK2 headset and Perception Neuron motion capture system. Telepresense with some sense of proprioception!

Oh, cool, I remember meeting these guys at least year's Maker Faire across from the e-NABLE booth. The already had most of their current setup working, but the addition of the Perception Neuron controller adds significantly to the sense of interactivity and realism. The motor movements are still too slow for real-time interaction, but perhaps pneumatic actuators could speed that up.

This was very cool. I would never have to physically be there and I would have my robot bring me my lunch. If I did manual labor, I would do it through this robot, if I was disabled I would secure work using a TP robot. So many good things can come from this.

LOVE the new intro! I've been wondering when you guys were gonna take Jamie off, since he never really did much on TESTED except make a failed spider walking robot. I wish Jamie the best, but I'm even more excited to see Adam take center stage in the new intro. That's what I'm really getting at.

i mean this idea of robotic vr-teleconference (being in other place with the aid of vr instead of traveling there with our original body) reminds me of the movie "surrogates" where people go outside using their "robotic avatar" while using it in the comfort/security of their home. Of course this one is not there yet, but imagine if this developed further (strap some legs and external power/battery for instance) it will be inching closer to that, but doesn't mean it will be a dystopian future though.

Faster micro controllers and get the motion capture through micro controllers instead of a PC. The PC adds lag at the USB port and in the software. Dedicated hardware will always be faster.

Latency way to high.
@KnightsWithoutATable
@KnightsWithoutATable 8 жыл бұрын
That is probably because of how they have their PID loops configured. It could also be from slack in the mechanics. Most likely it is from the micro controllers they are using. You can do a lot with Arduinos and some power control circuits, but they do have their limits on polling and response time. There comes a time when you have to move up to PLCs to do things or at least find faster hardware some other way. The motion capture they are doing is ran through the PC, so that is adding latency too. They could look at other means of motion capture like James Bruton is using on his KZbin channel in his Ultron torso robot.
@fa.h.
@fa.h. 8 жыл бұрын
KnightsWithoutATable thats probably the reason. have seen other things that was controlled with a VR headset or a sort of controller you move in 3D space that control a robot or a camera with much less latency. whenever you use a VR headset, you need really low latency to not make a lot of people sick.
@dshcfh
@dshcfh 8 жыл бұрын
If you're lucky you can get used to this kind of latency. Some people throw up at the slightest fps dip and if not throw up anyway, but when I had an Oculus I was running it on a gtx 750, so some of my games hit 25 fps and I just dealt with it. There's also moving the image artificially with the head tracking to compensate for the latency.
