In this video I build a 3D printed fully automatic power loom. The power loom is a 3D printed machine for advanced makers. It is driven by a 12V geared motor. There were some problems to solve in it. One of the main problems is the high torque needed to shoot the shuttle. This could only be solved by a chain drive. Also a bit tricky was the unwinding of the string from the shuttle. This had to be weighted down with brass plates so that it would not get stuck at the slightest thread resistance. The shape of the eccentrics made it possible to increase the opening time of the shafts. This gives you a little more time to shoot the shuttle through. If you want to build the power loom, be prepared for a longer project. After I solved all the problems, the loom worked process safe.

@@FraensEngineering yeah it's really cool, those old shuttle looms had a bad habit of throwing out the shuttle and hitting people so be careful, it may take your eye out 😂. You should make a tiny reed hook to thread the heddle with, it's much easier than using a needle.

This is great. A friend from my weaving guild here in the US just shared with me your braiding video. For the weaving, one thing that would improve the cloth is to have a finer "sett"; that is, your warp threads, the ones that go up and down, should be closer together. If that is not adjustable, you could also try thicker yarns, and try wool which won't be as slippery.
@FraensEngineering
@FraensEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
I tested a few different cords. Actually, bringing the warp threads closer together would not be very difficult. You would only have to change a few parts. Thanks for the tip.

Your design and execution is great. I love it. For improved clamping onto your shafts with 3D printed parts you can increase the diameter, hollow even or use hexagonal shafts. Using a small insert that fits into bearings would allow you to use hexagonal stock with no machining.

thats a great build! it sure asked for some serious time to level all the challenges to make it functional! I wonder if it needs to add too much complexity to adjust the design to: -add some light tension to the line thread -make the line travel faster and with more reliance; -input more pressure on the shafts to the cloth: -support run at more cycles/time as you said in the video and looking at your main challenges, building even at this scale already creates quite decent forces, so I assume that raising that can make some parts need a redesign or even a material change to withstand the powers involved
@FraensEngineering
@FraensEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think it will be difficult to tighten the thread in the shuttle. As soon as the shuttle has the slightest resistance, it stops. I had to make the shuttle heavier with brass plate so that it has more energy. Very important is the correct winding technique, so that the thread is easily unwound. Making it faster should work - just use a motor with more speed. But the higher speed of the shuttle must be slowed down again. This was also already a problem with me. The shuttle hit the lever and jumped back again. My solution was to leave the lever in this position after the shot. So the shuttle was slowed down a bit. To stretch the fabric more I had to put a rubber in the brake. I think here would still be a solution to look for to tension the fabric by means of a shaft and spring. To transfer the high torques it was necessary to stiffen the parts. It is also important to glue all the screws. This loosen otherwise constantly and adjust the whole machine. This is excellent - certainly the shape of things to come. What would be really good, however, is if you figured out a way to develop some kind of tension gauge that could be incorporated in a 3-d printed manual loom. The problem to which handwoven cloth is most vulnerable is when tension is relaxed and then reapplied as cloth is wound through the frames from the warp beam to the cloth beam.

Hi, I uploaded parts 42+43+44+45+46 to Thingivetse. I hope all parts are there now. I can still give you a few tips: I stiffened the gear wheels and cams with the shafts. I can really recommend that. Otherwise it can happen that you adjust the machine and suddenly a wheel slips and nothing works anymore. If you have an iPhone, make slow-mo videos. That really helps a lot when setting up the machine. Setting it up is a bit tricky. Do not give up ;-)

@Fraens Awesome build! I am currently working on a rigid heddle that has different DPI heddles. I think this might be my next 3d print project. Might I suggest a finer reed with that yarn. it will make the fabric look more tightly woven because you have more ends per inch/ cm. One of the issues you are also having is that you are letting the weft get to close to the beater bar. So the tension on the reeds and the strings are pulling your weft apart. Typically that is fixed by working closer to the front of the loom. I'm not sure how you would fix that with out redoing the winding mechanism though. Maybe a finer toothed gear?
@FraensEngineering
@FraensEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, unfortunately I don't quite understand your suggestions for improvement. The problem is the language barrier. Maybe you could try to describe it a little differently. I can adjust the ratchet wheel so that the trigger is a little slower. I think that's what you mean. I don't quite understand the second problem you describe. If I shoot through the shuttle further forward, it gets very tight between the spread cords.
@luckkibehemoth6626
@luckkibehemoth6626 2 жыл бұрын
@@FraensEngineering sorry I will do my best to clarify , the beater bar is the bar that pushes the thread into the previously woven threads. The weft or the string that the shuttle is weaving is not being pulled onto the front roller fast enough. So the cloth is getting to close to the beater bar. So when it moves forward to beat the thread into the weave it is pushing out towards the sides on the last warp thread. Causing it to loop on the end. There is a perfect spot when you are weaving it tends to be about half way between the front cloth rolling bar and the beater bar. If you were able to keep the beater bar pushing the threads to the center between the roller and beater bar it might help with your cloth ends. So if the cloth were passing through a little faster at the same tension or more frequently. It might help a little. When I am using my ridged heddle loom. I try to keep the shuttle stick passing through the "sweet spot". I also try to use a finer Reed or heddle to keep it square if I am using a fine thread.

It seems that it is the shuttle that is causing the most trouble. Have you considered using a rapier weft insertion mechanism instead? I think that a band for a flexible rapier (takes much less space than rigid one) could be made out of laser cut polypropylen sheeting, and the drive wheel could be 3d printed. With a single sided flexible rapier mechanism the surplus band can just stay at the low side of the slay when retracted.
@FraensEngineering
@FraensEngineering Жыл бұрын
I don't quite understand how you mean that. But there are systems with a gripper that pushes the thread through. He is then held on the other side. I think this would be a lot more reliable. If the thread is wound properly in the shuttle, it works relatively well.
@Jononor
@Jononor Жыл бұрын
@@FraensEngineering yeah, rapier is the name off such systems that uses a gripper to carry thread across. Most basic is "single rigid rapier", which is just a rod that pushes the thread across and goes back again. But one gets this long spear of a stick coming out of the machine which is not so good for space or safety. The flexible rapier uses a flexible band instead of the rolid rod. Kinda like a stiff belt, that is pushed by a drive wheel. I tried to share a link but the comment got removed :/

Here is another automated loom one could take inspiration from. Very complex. But I think the rapier push/pull mechanism of the shuttle looks quite smart! It keeps the Sam shuttle as here, but works much more reliably than trying to throw the shuttle across! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHO4g2dsa9eJh9U

The speed in the video is the same as it is in real life. Only some slow motion was added. The speed depends on the engine speed.

@@FraensEngineering Well I would like to ask you an estimation cost of how much would you charge to build a real size high precision Mat Blind Machine. In Chile artisans adapts industrial loom machines and in my final thesis I am writing a business plan to automatize the whole process. The better the estimations costs in my final plan higher probabilities of funding I could get from startups funds. Thank you very much in advanced and btw great videos I am an Arduino and Blender enthusiast but I cannot reach those levels of sophistication
