I would say that the only downside to The Cube™ is that you can't actually scoop out of the container itself. It's much faster with a traditional cup to take one big scoop out of the sugar container than filling it one spoonful at a time.

I really like this idea, but I'm pretty leery about using FDM prints for food/water or bathroom supplies like toothbrush holders, regardless of whether they're food-safe filament and come out of a stainless steel nozzle. The problem for me is that FDM printing produces objects with very high surface area compared to injection molding, which makes it hard to remove residue, and gives ample space for moisture, bacteria, and fungi to hang out. This could probably be mitigated by using PETG and vapor-smoothing it with MEK, but I haven't come across any PETs that can stand up to a dishwasher. If anyone has a suggestion in that niche, I'd be interested. Edit: As an addendum, don't ever use ABS for anything contacting food, especially warm food. It can be vapor-smoothed with acetone to take care of the porosity, but it can leech off acrylonitrile, which is an irritant, and a class 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic). Not to say you didn't cover that well enough in the video, but I feel it bears repeating.
@SlEasyTarget7 жыл бұрын
You do not have to worry about nozzles, unless you have one made of lead. No nozzle hard enough to print properly will ever lose enough material to harmfully contaminate a print.
@StopChangingUsernamesYouTube7 жыл бұрын

The coolest thing about the measuring cube is the modeling challenge. The geometry is simple enough, but getting all the sizes right will be tricky. Food safety aside... The beauty of the 'cup' measure is that only matters that it's consistent to itself. It doesn't really matter if the 1 cup measure is 10% over 8 oz as long as every other cup measurement you use in the recipe is off by the same amount... If the half cup measure is half the 1 cup measure, etc, you're good to go... That said, I've seen the things that go thru my printer... My extruder gear is a horror show... Not using it to cook :D

It does matter when you mix it with other units (such as a fixed number of eggs), and it also means you need to use specific grades of some ingredients (ex., 1 cup of powdered sugar is a lot more sugar than 1 cup of sanding sugar). If you measure by mass, you always get it right and you have less stuff to wash and store. Just put the mixing bowl on top of your scales and pour in the ingredients, resetting the scales after each one.

@jasonbailey91397 жыл бұрын
So, metric removes the need to take measurements when baking? That's really cool! I should have told my science teachers that, as they made me use scales, graduated cylinders, and other measuring devices that were all metric. Yes, that's right. Despite popular belief, science classes in the USA (from the 6th year through university) all use metric (with a dash of imperial, just so we'd know why metric was superior). The only time I've ever used slugs, foot-pounds, and the like were in Engineering courses. If Europeans believe that being bilingual is beneficial and that language helps maintain one's culture, then why do they poo-poo multiple systems of measurement. Every argument that can be made for converting the world to metric could be made for converting to one universal language.

@mrc4nl6 жыл бұрын
Well, metric makes it easier. Because 1ml is about 1 gram. So i to measure water, you dont really need a measure cup, just a scale. Though i use one transparent measure cup for water, because you can easily see how much you need to add. when i need to bake something, the ingredients(apart from water) are given by weight, or teaspoon/tablespoon.
@fhuber75076 жыл бұрын
The metric system is based on a flawed estimate of the distance around the earth from pole to pole. That's right... the metric system is based on a LIE! Then they looked for a wavelength of light to make the standard. But there's a wavelength of light that is exactly 1 yard too. So, just because you are bad at math and thus can't figure out anything other than the metric system, doesn't make your system better. It just makes you bad at math. And... you can do water by the ounce too... 1 gallon is 128 fluid ounces. 1 gallon of pure water is 128 oz. But 1 gallon of milk IS 128 fluid ounces, but its not 128 ounces of mass. There's more mass. So you CAN NOT use the scale to measure anything without a table to tell what product will weigh how much per unit of volume. Typical motor oil is about 7 pounds a gallon while water is 8 pounds a gallon.

Love your channel Sir! This is a great print. I Read most comments and issues on this one, here are the suggestions for the peanut gallery. 1. Coat it with food safe epoxy, layer lines issue solved. 2. The precision is a non issue. Anyone who actually cooks knows no recipe depends on that level of accuracy, if they even measure at all for anything less than large quantities. 3. I believe this is aimed at the home user, not professional chefs, so the efficiency of scooping is a non issue for most. 4. Print it in a color you love and make it an accessory in your kitchen, then you don't have to worry about it fitting in a drawer. Hope this helps, happy printing!

A properly designed set of nesting measuring cups would take up less space then that.... and you could not have to use another spoon to fill it... Something you might want to look into printing... Also, the resin itself is what dictates food contact safety, the process doesn't dictate anything, because it has to do with how a plastic would break down or other reactions with food products. That being said the FDM process does inherently create food risks, largest of which is the issue of surface area for bacterium to live, prints are filled with little crevices that food waste could work into and bacterium can live on, then of course you can't wash them fully. But for a purely food safe resin, un-dyed PET, PETG, HDPE, and PC would be great places to start.

I'd love to see more of this stuff for sure! I recently made a hand mixer which I'm going to print on my DLP, to use to stir the resin in my vat, but I'd love to see how it goes on an FDM print! Could be used to stir paint or anything if you're a bit concerned about using it with food I guess :) Someone on twitter threw some ideas at me about making it easier to print on FDM, so I modified some of the parts to hopefully make it easier. You can find the files here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2751080 I've marked it as WIP as I may make further alterations if people have difficulty with any bits. Funnily enough, the tips I got came from a guy who posted something about the same model that is the subject of this video :)

Nice Video! Regarding the issue of food safe prints and the layer lines, why not coat the print in a thin layer of food safe epoxy? That should seal the layer lines and it shouldn't be to much work?

Not all Epoxy is foodsafe. But it is a smart idea to find something to cover the lines up.
