For better success on printing roller chain you should get a dual nozzle extruder and a water soluble filament for printing supports then just print it on its side, also comes in handy for any other small prints that would be hard to clean out

@@MikkoRantalainen Prusa is notorious for not ever giving away anything. You might have a better shot with a random Chinese company like Geeetech and having them offer their 2-way mixtruder printer. I suspect PVOH is the only sensible soluble filament for it due to bad mix chamber behaviour. There will be a lot of purge. Then again MMU is only somewhat better. I'm kind of curious when ink separator servo will make it's way into printers. Basically some guy made an experiment where he attached a solenoid driven black Sharpie onto the printer toolhead. He manually programmed it to get deployed and paint on top of the solid zero distance support roof, so there is no software support for the time being unfortunately. On top of the ink, the new layer filament bead adhesion was compromised and the support peeled off perfectly without print scarring. The ink residue could then be washed off with alcohol.
@MikkoRantalainen2 жыл бұрын
@@SianaGearz Interesting... so sharpie was used to intentionally introduce contamination to avoid/reduce adhesion without adding any meaningful layer high. Sounds pretty clever and quite easy to implement in practice.

I wish somebody created CAD software that had modeling tools equal to Blender 3D. Or that Blender actually supported CAD surfaces so you could do this kind of modeling without having to decide the polygon count before doing the work. Of course, "real" CAD programs still emit polygons in the end because that's all that STL can support before printing. The difference is that during modeling, real CAD software pretends that you have unlimited polygon budget so curved surfaces are totally smooth.
@DUIofPhysics2 жыл бұрын
That's literally the problem. The way 'real' CAD software handles the model and the way a modelling tool like blender handles the model is fundamentally different. With a CAD package, the entire model is generated numerically, all curves & surfaces are controlled by equations and fixed relationships. In a modelling package like Blender, you model by adding and removing polygons, sewing meshes together or distorting them to create a shape. The two concepts cannot work together simultaneously. The best bet you'd have is to model something up in CAD, then export it as a mesh, into Blender, then do the bespoke polygon mesh manipulation. AFAIK anyway...

love the design and the molding, but chain-making can be improved... the base idea is great, but 1) don't use blender for mechanical stuff, use a CAD. a simple and reliable browser one is OnShape. 2) print the chain in PETG not PLA. 3) the printing angle is a great choice 4) let the slicer generate the supports, don't try to model them, the results will be much much better. finally 4) don't do the small circular indentations on the sides of the chainlink panels, just leave it with the ends rounded, it will give you extra strength.
