3D Propeller Testing -Finding the Perfect Pitch- Low and Slow Lessons for RC Aerobatic Pilots

This video discusses the criteria that I use when selecting the proper pitch and diameter for my remote control airplane. In this video I am flying an AJ Aircraft 106” Raven. This is the same criteria I use on all of my Extreme Flight remote control airplanes. I am using a JR transmitter with Savox servos and a DLE engine. The reason for making this video was because I removed my GP123 for maintenance and replaced it with a DLE.

I have the T-14 with the CNC gimbals. Been flying with JR for a couple of years now and it is absolutely solid. I still use Spektrum for my smaller electric stuff, everything big or of value is on JR.

@@RC-Air Nice! I heard some very experienced 3d pilot switched from his t14 to a frsky x18 a few months ago for his balsas. Would you say you'd trust the DMSS system a lot more than Spek/Futaba/Frsky?

@@dontflyspirit6535 so this is a loaded question that I’ve been hesitant to answer. So I will answer it this way, FOR ME I chose to go with a brand and platform that I knew I could trust based on the quality of pilots that represent JR/DeeForce. I genuinely appreciate the simplicity of the T14 as it does not have an android system running in the background. I have used both Futaba and Spektrum radios with good results, yet at the end of the day, I have enjoyed my JR system the most and so that is why I fly with. I have not tried alternate brands and I’m simply not willing to because I know that what I have works very well and I trust it. That’s about as PC of a response as I can give you.

Great video! would you say that going to a higher pitch prop and adjusted Cg would have the same effect on an 60" electric edge ? I am running a 16 x 8 wood falcon prop extreme flight edge with their 22 motor , but i seem to run out of aileron while in a hover .

I only had a 60" (Extra NG) for a hot minute and I really didn't get a lot of time on it before I sold it. In my notes I show that I started with a 16x8 and found that it was just too much and so I then went to a 16x7 Xoar wood and found that the wider blade and stiffer prop seemed to smooth out the plane quite a bit. You definitely want to have a neutral CG or forward with a 60" they are so lite and over powered that the smallest amount of additional thrust is VERY noticeable. Moving the CG forward will give your ailerons more authority as well. Be careful not to run too much throw on your ailerons, I myself run 35 degrees on my big planes, too much aileron will block air going to the tail. Also watch your throttle, incremental increases in thrust, if you surge it it will want to torque harder.

I have a new 66” blackhorse sbach with the side-force winglets. DLE20 16X8 and not enough vertical in my opinion. Is there a different prop size you would suggest trying?

This is very helpful!!! I’m at 6,000 ft in Colorado and our density altitude is 9k right now. Props here have less ‘bite’. Would a 27x11 be worth trying? I’m just getting into big gas planes and have a SW ars300 w/ gp123cc. It came with a 28x9.5 bit I like to fly with a consistent throttle like you. Thanks!!!

So I have a friend in Colorado that has flown an ARS for years. He’s using a 29x9 in the colder months and a 29x9w in the hot months to get a little extra bite. Hopefully that helps. The 27x11 will likely make the plane feel really heavy and droppy in stalls.
