3D Reconstruction of Neanderthal Woman’s Face Created From Skull

Ten years ago, archeologists found the remains of an ancient shattered skull. In the years since, they pieced together as much as they could and created a 3D model of a Neanderthal who they say lived 75 thousand years ago. The remains were found in Iraq, where researchers have been digging up a burial site since the 1950s. While many Neanderthal remains have been found since then, this find was especially exciting. I actually am finishing up a facial reconstruction course for college right now and really you’d be surprised how much information a skull would give you. It’s much easier to identify characteristics now with current technology but you can make educated guesses based on what we already know. Like for instance, since she is related to us, we can assume she doesn’t have a giant nose like Pinocchio due to evolution. We can’t say for sure but the skull gives us *a lot* of information.

The skull was actually "as flat as a pancake", but they were able to piece it back together. Doing facial reconstructions like this is controversial.. and is very likely not accurate. But it allows so many more people to be interested.. because looking at a face is relatable, bones .. not so much.

But the fact is a lot of these people died because of gum disease, now think about it You still had cavities back in them days too and they didn't know how to brush their teeth or floss and you can get massive infections like that.
