3D Scanning the Stanley Cup! 🏆

When a major TV network wanted to do high end renderings and animations of the Stanley Cup, they partnered with EMS to 3D scan one of the oldest and most prestigious sports trophy in the world. Using our Creaform HandySCAN Black Elite we were able to 3D scan the Stanley Cup in extremely high detail to capture every scratch, dent and lettering on the cup with no scanning spray required. The final model contained over 144 million triangles and the raw scan file was over 16 GB in size.

Thats an incredible result on a polished surface! Amazing! I wonder how much better the result could have been using a scanning spray!

Spray wouldn't make a difference with the HandySCAN Blacke Elite. In addition, there is some really faint text from the early 1900's that spray woudl have filled in.

I use the HandySCAN Black Elite to scan my clay sculptures. Seeing how you use those poles with the dots added, placed around the Cup, is that so you didn't have to use the dots on the Cup itself? The Scanner seems to get lost on vertical elements like my sculptures so I wonder if using some like this will help the scanner not to get confused.

Hey SDG, the HandySCAN Black Elite 3D scanner had no issues with the targets on the vertical rods. The targets are staggered enough, and the rods are not perfectly straight (by design) so it didn't get lost or confused at all. The NHL would not allow us to place targets on the cup or use any scanning spray so this is what we used. Plus, the targets would cover up the text on the cup. We use this same setup for large turbine blades and other similarly shaped parts with very good success. Here is fun fact. The Stanley Cup doesn’t stay in the same place for more than 4 hours. For whatever reason ( I think security) they don’t like to leave it out in the open for more than that amount of time. The Keeper of the Cup, in this case Mike, is not allowed to have it leave his eyesight the entire time.

thank you. I am enjoying the elite and still working out how I might workout the best setup for a clay sculpture of a human figure to be scanned best with this tool, without having to put stickers all over the clay.@@EMS3D
