Here's how we created a full 3D set extension / virtual environment for a character filmed in front of a green screen, with some help from our friends at Production Crate and using Adobe After Effects!
This is a bit like our previous experiments with matte paintings, but this time we take it to the third dimension and add a moving subject. We filmed a character walking on a treadmill in front of a green screen, removed the green with Keylight and then composited in lots of ProductionCrate's amazing hi-res set extension scenery behind. We then arranged these in After Effects on the Z axis in 3D space and created an artificial camera to move thorough the scenery. This gives the impression that the camera is moving backwards with the walking figure.

I have a degree in visual effects and motion graphics, but never really was able to get set extensions and the like down, I did a lot of compositing. 3d just scared me too much, but you've explained it so well in 10 minutes! I may have to give this a proper go!

Now that was pretty cool. One thing I would recommend to make the shot look even less like pictures is give a slight movement to the hanging wires above the character as he is walking. Idk how you would do that but it would be cool and add a little something. Great video!

Honest feedback I watched this Video serval times and still felt something is wrong and the final result is not that real... After some time I came to conclusion that the lighting on your Body is entirely wrong... The lighting of the environment is completely even with less contrast...But on your left side of face there is strong key light and there is more contrast as compared to other elements if you would have done a good lighting, The end result will be perfect and only a few would say that this is a set extension.

maybe he could just reverse himself on the x scale, and add a strong light from the sky, so that it seems more like the light on his body comes from the sky

I noticed the same thing. I would say this is another example of what he was saying about having an idea of what’s in your intended background BEFORE shooting your green screen clip. You can plan to match your lights accordingly if you do. Still, for a proof of concept, it’s pretty cool and gets the mind thinking on how to enrich one’s green screen shots.

I saw what you mean, I think it's also the fact that there is no paralexing on the brick walls in the background, it has a deapth and the bricks that are showing it are not moving against the front side of the wall in anyways, also the camera movement too smooth

It also looks flat because hes just using image planes, i would definitely notice the flatness if this was in a film, solution is using 3d elements for anything close to the camera of course

Very cool. One thing that I think would make the brick wall look less fake is if it was an actual 3D model with textures and the like, because when you move through something like a brick archway irl you should see a bit of the sides of the bricks that diminishes the further you zoom out, but otherwise it looks really good.

Hi Steve, From the point of view of a home KZbin creator, many would not want to pay a subscription when the future financial position is unknown. What is most useful to know is how to create a KZbin video with limited resources. I used a green shower curtain and a Flip camera. I found a bright green colour such as is used by the ASDA supermarket worked better with a cheap camera. If you get a bathroom extending pole and hang a shower curtain with a scene on it, that saves a lot of post-production work. You might like to make a video demonstrating what you can do with free tools such as Kedenlive, GIMP, and a shower curtain! Thanks for uploading.

You enjoyed what you did, right ? So keep on doin' it but properly, I mean without x useless ... layers (wtf ?), with proper light wrap, matte controls, z depth blur, etc etc... I repeat it beacause I wrote it before : I LOVE the way you spread things, make them appreciated, I loved your landing superhero, crashing glass and so many other things (like drone), don't misinterpret my words but hey : this is another world, which will force you enter the node zone... Node based apps man, or you won't evolve anyway ... Go on with Nuke or Fusion, you'll stop being stuck in layer based obsolete days, you'll be the 1st guy to really fully enjoy matte paintings, set extensions, camera projection and anything you just did here And anyway, go on, man you rock and especially your positive attitude does the thing ;)

Here's a question... what video camera do you use for filming? I have been wanting to buy a video camera, but I don't want to get too pricey for no reason. So I figured I would ask the "best quality for smallest amount" people.. what camera do you have for the cheapest price, but the best quality?
@SteveRamsdenYoutube
@SteveRamsdenYoutube 2 жыл бұрын
That's always a tricky one for me to answer as I also do this stuff professionally, so the kit I use is probably way more than what most hobbyists would go for. It also greatly depends on what you are filming, as there's no perfect camera for everything. But if I was looking to get started these days doing these sorts of projects, I would probably go for an entry-level DSLR (perhaps take a look at something like the Canon SL2 / 2000D?) - but you'd also need to invest in lenses of course if you weren't just going to rely on the kit lens. My upcoming course DIY Moviemaking will cover all the things to look for when getting started, so stay tuned for that!
