Great stuff. Gotta find the balance between permabulking and permacutting.

great listen! I started late in life (late 30's - 42 now) and I was 260 and fat. Worked my way down to 145 but skinny fat. I've spent a year gaining back up to 175 and i can't tell you how much of a mind F it is gaining wait when you were fat earlier in life. I have had to completely switch mindset. I have to tell myself there's a big difference with being fat and having fat. I plan to keep gaining for a few more months before maintaining for a few months, then spending a few weeks (6ish) cutting some fat before gaining again.

So true when Berto said 'muscle gain comes via taking matter from this extended universe'. Matter can only be formed out of matter. Muscle is no exception so eat up, people!

50:00 Feel this. Been running macros at 650 carb 220 protein 120 fat for two weeks and have lost half a pound! 14k steps per day is my average but to cut those down just interferes with life and causes more stress. Sat at 190lbs now around 13-14% body fat and want to bulk as I know its the right decision but right now a cut is far more appealing...

To 3dmj how would you train and do cardio, when your done with being on stage? And just maintaining and living your life and always being in cutting phase or bulking phase, just be in life phase ??? Thank You 🙏

1:00:30 yeah.. like, in very good conditions, how much muscle can be gained in a month or two months? Beginner, intermediate, advanced lifters? Like if half a lb, then perhaps target a weekly rate of gain to support that? Then after a month or two or three perhaps adjust as needed?

#podcast best argument I have heard for permabulking 😅 my intuitive eating had me gain 20lbs in 3 months lol

If I'm newish powerlifter who has been training for about 4 years, but I've gone back and forth between gaining and cutting, and feel like I've been stuck at the same strength level (total around 1000) for about 2 years, could I run a slow gaining phase, but instead of having a goal bodyweight, make the phase last until I can hit a goal total of like 1200 with at least a 405sq, 500dl, and 275 bench? Or should I always have a body weight in mind?

What is this “Mom’s cooking” that y’all seemed to have? I’m picturing a Beverly Goldberg scenario where every dish is covered with cheese and you’re expected to eat until you can barely move.

I think it is all about energy-availability for gaining. If you are too lean (stage-lean), you wont grow muscle even while in a good surplus. If you have enough storage (and access, which should be given for a metabolically healthy athlete), you don't need a crazy surplus (or any at all) to build.
