I've been stuck with this problem for so long. I'm new to maya and my prof didn't even mention to switch the move tool's pivot from world to object. Thank you very much, you saved me. Definitely earned a sub!

There is another cool trick in Maya to save custom pivot to object: Go to "Modify>Bake Pivot". It allows you to "bake" custom pivot orientation for the object, without needing to parent one object to another.

Love it and thank you. I learn some new ones. Love the tit bits for D key. With pin on is the best. Would be lovely if i could even make that new custom orientation the object default hard coded (the one that goes back with reset pivot). That still missing. The work around i do id to make a cube, orient it to a face i wanna, parent my object to that cube and than freeze transformations. A one click for this would be perfect master the orient pivot tool.

If I understand you correctly, try using "Modify>Bake Pivot". It allows you to "bake" custom pivot orientation, without needing to parent one object to another.

Hi, Thanks for these great tricks! i on and off watch this video again and again, i suppose it is hard to grab the knowledge from Maya offical help docs,cos it has a lot hidden operating things.and a lot of senior user might not know it. thanks:)
@JanJinda4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Documentation is a first place to find info. But as you say. There’s a ton of hidden features, which you usually are not looking for in documentation.

Hi Jan - thx for these tips and tricks - wondering if you can show us how to move component accurately by number (ie if I want to move a face 85mm in the X direction) and what happens when I want to move the component long the axis by a specific distant in 3d space - thx alot!

Awesome video! But I have one question. I'm not sure why this only started happening to me recently, but I'm no longer able to permanently change the orientation of an objects' "Object Rotation." I want to edit the objects' "Object Rotation" orientation, not make a "Custom Orientation" which gets applied to everything in the scene, it seems. I think this is only started happening in Maya 2019 as far as I know. If you can answer, Much Appreciated. Thanks, Jan Jinda! - Chad P

Thanks! That’s strange. Try to reset the tool settings. If it won’t work, usual solution is to delete your preferences.
@apersonathome4 жыл бұрын
Hey @@JanJinda ! Thanks for the reply! Resetting tool settings doesn't work. And this problem is consistent in the Maya's in the several other people's machines that I asked, all being maya 2019. I asked three others to be specific. And I'd rather not reset preferences unless it's for sure that it works. Can I ask what maya you are using, and is this problem happening to you?

Try to press + to change gizmo size. I can be really small. Or go to Tool Properties by double clicking rotate in screen left panel and reset settings
