8:11 - if you switch both the curve and entire mash network off and on, it should set the chain pattern correctly all the way down the curve without having to rotate the initial object

I found it easier to model the link as two pieces and then avoid the replicator node all together. This way you won't have to rotate the mesh to get it to conform to the curve. It does that out of the box when using the curve node.
@JanJinda5 жыл бұрын
Does it bend those two according to the curve? I have to try that. However you won't get random 'noise' between those two I guess.

@etienneadam61812 жыл бұрын
Thansk for the tuts ! For the issue with the chain not "updating" the rotation every 2nd pattern, I found out that (in Maya 2022), if you just uncheck the curve node et reactivate it right away, the replicator node under it gets applied. Toggling the activation of a specific mash node seems to update the node under it and apply it once you toggle on the node over it again.

Awesome. I have been looking for a way to make chain shoot out like in the movie Alita Grewishka. Is it possible? Or maybe move with your chained lizard? Like grow chain animation.
@JanJinda4 жыл бұрын
I'm just guessing, but growing should be possible by animating MASH parameters. As MASH is made for motion graphics that should be doable. Try to search for MASH animation in documentation. As for movement with lizard, in that case, the chain has to be simulated as a rigid body.

Hi Jan, awesome tutorial! Thanks so much. However, I have a question. After creating my chain link and the MASH network, I can't find my original mesh in the viewport although I can still select it in the Outliner. I'm sure this is something simple I'm missing, but would you please help? I'm stuck at about the 12:08 mark and have no idea what you did to make the original mesh visible. Thank you!
@JanJinda5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, original mesh is automatically hidden when MASH is created. You can unhide it by selecting it in Outliner and pressing Shift+H or going to Display -> Show -> Show Selected (or All etc.)

hi, i found this tutorial very usefull, i´m trying to do a procedural rope, so i create a cylinder eliminate the caps make uvs and then use the mash options, but with the Mash method the end of the cylinder i´m use did not connect and merge with the start a of the next one as if i use for example the extrude method along a curve. There´s any option to do that? Thanks for the tutorial.
@JanJinda4 жыл бұрын
Hi Emilio, I'm pretty sure rope would be better to be made by Extrude Along Curve or possibly Curve Warp. MASH is made for instancing geometries so you would have to merge those vertices afterwards.
@emiliovera48874 жыл бұрын
@@JanJinda thanks for the reply, yea extrude seems the better option but still got the problem of the uv, i would like to make them tileable so i don´t need to use a lot of my uv space only on a rope, gonna try the curve warp

Hey man can you please tell me a solution for this problem. After i make the desired necklace using MASH, the object is disabled in the outliner. And I can't select or click the mesh/necklace and the only thing i can select is the curve. The link i made can't be selected at all. What can I do ?
@JanJinda3 жыл бұрын
Hey, could be that you have some object disabled in selection masks. knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2020/ENU/Maya-Basics/files/GUID-E3DBC099-2E93-47F3-B7FA-A219DB72B4A7-htm.html

I tried so often to work with MASH but it always give me strange behaviour. I gaved it a chance again, this time when I add a curve to the mash editor it (as followed in the tutorial) it will hide my mesh and nothing happens. If i turn my mesh on in the Outliner all Inputs from the Replicator doesnt effect the mesh anymore. I don't get it.
@JanJinda4 жыл бұрын
It can be caused by multiple issues. Pivot point on a wrong place, weird offsets in the replicator or so. Original mesh is not modified, that should stay hidden. New mesh is created by replicator, usually called *_ReproMesh.
@jake92252 жыл бұрын
I did everything you did in the tutorial but with a different object (A cylinder with a Helix around it. I combined it with Bolean->Union and merged all vertecies as well as freezed the object and deleted the history) but it doesnt work. It doesnt follow the curved. It makes a turn, but its not following the curve that I dragged into the Mash-thing (the display on the right). Very weird. I know that you probably cant help me with it from what I told you, I just wanted to vent my anger :(( Origianlly I wanted to make a long tube that has a Helix around it, but I dont know how else I should make this oh and, its not really working with other obejcts as well. Pretty weird Edit: So, I tried it with a Helix and it works as it should. I tried it with a Sphere and that doesn work
@JanJinda2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response; I missed your comment. It could be caused by a wrongly placed pivot.
